Welcome to Head-Fi, sorry about the wallet. (Standard greeting until we come up with a better one.)

A couple of questions:
1. Do you play bass or lead guitar?
2. Is your budget in the hundreds like you aluded to, or less?
3. Will you or your friend hook them up and use them with a dedicated headphone amp?
4. Is there any particular aspect of the music you really prefer, like bass, highs, mids, etc.?

These should help us narrow down your choices quite a bit, so let us know what you can.

i play lead electric

my budget is in the hundreds but if there are really good headphones for like 1000 dollars i dont need them that bad haha

i dont know what a headphone amp is, i get an idea from the name hahah but i didnt know they existed ( would i need one, im plugging them into my guitar amp)

as for aspect of music, i need the distortion to be clear (lol ironic) i mean i want the heavy stuff to sound good, i play mostly metal, but i do play just about everything.

thanks

sanction,

1] what type of guitar amp do you have and what does the manual say is the output impedance at the headphone jack?

2] many gamers are swearing by the dt770, but it needs an amp to sound good. coming out of a low output impedaance sound card, there are plenty of 30 - 100 ohm headphones you may be interested in, like the Senn 280, senn 590, Grado sr80 - sr325, philips hp890, hp910, denon hd750, hd950, and possibly some akg's and sony's (like the V6), D66, etc.

Ok, I asked as the need for bass would mean really good bass as opposed to a more full range sound. In your case you could get any number of headphones, hereafter called cans, that would be quite awesome.

Audio-Technica ATH-A1000 $319 or so and need to be ordered from overseas. Not a problem as many, including myself have done so. Very accurate, comfortable, and sounds really good.

Grado SR-225 great sounds, but less comfortable. Costs about $200.

I love my Sony CD3000 cans. They are super comfortable, sound incredible, and are very easy to drive without an amp.

As a cheap alternatice I'll throw in the trusty Sony V6 cans. These are discontinued, but can still be found for a reasonable $80 or less.

If you want sound isolation to boot, the Etymonics ER-4S fits in your ears, sound INCREDIBLE, fit into a pouch for travel, and sit in your ears. Not everyone likes them as they sit in your ears for extended periods of time.

Hope this helps. Let us know if anything here sounds good, and we'll try and knock out some of the options for ya.
