The new MP3 player will be called the Digital Jukebox, and come with a 15G-byte hard drive, the source said.

Apple Computer Inc. has received a great deal of critical and commercial praise for its iPod MP3 players, and Dell will follow its usual strategy of letting another company demonstrate a market for a particular product before entering that market itself.

No specs, pictures, price. Supposedly coming out this Thursday. I really want to think that this will be a challenger in terms of size and design to the iPod, but somehow I picture an Archos-like unit from them.

Any thoughts?

I'm a Dell computer user and I'm pretty happy with their computers, but slapping a label on someone else's product like they did with the lexmark brand isn't my idea of moving the game forward, it's just another company involved in areas it shouldn't be, just like Gateway. The point is I don't see anything revolutionary coming out of Dell in the MP3 market. It'll be a Dell label on another brand so Dell can just get a piece of the action. If they manage to sell a boat load of players, they'll eventually break away and come out with something in house on their own, but until then don't expect fireworks with Dell's introduction into music. In fact expect to me disappointed. I love their computers, but when a company starts to spread itself thin, then something eventually will suffer and that will be the bread and butter business that made Dell what it is today.

I might eat my words, but somehow I don't think I will.

Even though I agree with many of the previous posters remarks, Dell has come up with some innovative offerings outside of PCs. Their Axim line of PDAs comes to mind as well as their portable LCD projectors. These are not rebranded products. One can hope that their MP3 offering will be innovative rather than a rebranding of another available player.

exactly. im hopin for a repeat of the same type of thing when gateway released their flatscreen TV. Its obviously a bit different, but its still a zomputer company releasing a product in a new field.

I don't consider Dell to be innovative at all, even with products that they have not rebranded. The only thing they do is come out with a good product and drop the price significantly. For instance, the Axim that was mentioned earlier. It's nice, but it's really no different from other similar models out there. The only difference is the price. The Axim is cheap. But it's also bigger and more clunky than, say the iPaqs. I feel the same way about the majority of their laptops. I believe I'm justified in my opinion here because I own an Axim, and an Inspiron 5100. I think the next laptop I buy will be an Apple though. I want more options

i think dell can make a good mp3 player. hopefully, though, they'll follow apple's lead and keep it simple as opposed to clunky. they seem to make a big deal about their designers in the "intern" ads, but most of their pc's have left much to be desired lately in terms of aesthetics.
