I want to buy some good headphones for my friend. He has HD555s and I want to give him a little better than that...atleast something little good than those.. The budget is around 150$.
Usage is completely for music and movies...bass should be less and sound clarity and quality should be good..

For movies, the Grados may not give the slam your friend would like, but musically, they are terrific for the money. The Audio-Technica AD700s, while easy to listen to, aren't nearly as immediate or musically engaging as the Grado.

What kind of music? The two headphones that come to mind are Grados (SR60(i), SR80(i), SR125(i), maybe even a used pair of SR225's) and the AD700s, but they're kind of complete opposites. Neither has huge bass, but the Grados are more immediate and musical (some would say "small sound stage" and "colored"), making them great for rock, but the AD700s have a much bigger sound stage (their main selling point) and are much more laid-back, making them more the choice for classical or old jazz, as well as gaming.

well the music he listens is usually rock and metal ..like ac/dc, iron maiden, etc etc..and the headphones will be used for the blu-rays as well..
Hows ATH A700s (closed) ?
are these better than HD555s?

personally, my hd555s leave me wanting with most musical genres, but i'm keeping them around because i LOVE them for movies. the soundstage is great. i'd recommend the grados mentioned if he's keeping the 555s for movies, but otherwise the ad700 would sound better for his multiple uses.
