What is the best (and inexpensive) way to make 120V amp working on 240V? May the cheap of-the-shelf tranny affect the sound?

You can buy an inexpensive 120V-240V transformer.

find out the (peak) wattage rating of your amp, and then get a step-up transformer that's 20% above that figure.

Maplin sell them, not sure about quality though.
The ones I've seen have also only gone up to 150W.
You may want to look at import console shops online, they'll sell them for the people who import consoles.
If whatever you have is worth it - change the transformer?
