Hey all,

I've noticed that everywhere seems to be sold out of the 120 GB PS3? Does anyone know if Sony is pulling these? Target, Best Buy, and Walmart all seem to be sold out. Amazon is back ordered 2-5 weeks- somethings funny.. are they going to release a new model?

My bet would be that retailers are only now reordering after trying to get through whatever they had left of Q4 stock. The suppliers may not have much left after the holidays either.

I want to get one for my birthday + christmas present, but no one has them.

I don't want to spend the extra $50 for the 250GB HD, cause quite frankly, I can't see why I'd need the extra space.

Oh, you will. I have what was originally a 40 GB PS3 and have upgraded it with a 320 GB HD within about 5 months. Once you realize the full potential of the PS3 and start using it as a media center (though it will stream from a PC) and download games, and games installs, and save games, that HD space goes pretty quick.

I don't know if the new-style PS3s have user changeable HDs as the original series did. If so, I would definitely save the money and go with the smaller HD with plans to upgrade at some point in the future.

Yeah, I guess I'm a little unclear as to what the hard drive is for. I thought 120GB seemed like overkill, since I had assumed it was basically for save games, and downloaded PSOne games. I'm pretty excited about getting it, though I wish I could find a 120 GB model around here. I think my wife would like to actually go pick it up with me.

The PS3 allows you to download content, demos, previews as well as full on movies from PSN (Playstation Network). Some games also require you (or give you the option to install) it to your hard drive for faster response.

You can also hook up any FAT32 formatted hard drive via USB and transfer content into your PS3's hard drive.

I have a 60GB and I've only reached about half my limit. Then again I don't download a lot of games or content online.

Hope that helps.

And sorry OP, to answer your original question.. the 120 and 250s Slims are pretty much the only version available nowadays from Sony. You can get the old style (non slim) but it will most likely be used OR you can luck in on stores that are carrying older stock.

Sony is moving their emphasis to the larger hard drive systems, that's been mentioned on a few tech sites. It's an indication of the push towards a multimedia home entertainment system rather than just a game machine. With media streaming, Netflix attachment and the increasing size of BDLive content needs it's just a logical progression.

But, if you're just interested in games you still need to consider hard drive size with the PS3. Many of the games require a large amount of data to be stored on the PS3. Uncharted 2 alone requires 1GB of storage just to run, other games in the future may require more.

I hope the PS4 comes with a 250gb SSD
biggrin.gif
Right now those SSDs are like $800 alone though

I've got the best PS3 of all, 60gb

Backwards compitable ftw. I remember at one point they were selling for $1400 on ebay because of this. I have no idea why I didn't sell it.

I doubt they would move towards SSD's next generation, as the games are disc based and multimedia doesn't need too much random access speed (or a super high access speed period).

My guess is they would move towards bigger and bigger hard drives far before throwing a SSD in there.

I have the older version of the PS3 80 gig. Is there a site where I can check out hard drive upgrades for it? I have no idea what to get or where. Is it a simple procedure?
Thanks!!

From what I've read, any notebook size SATA harddrive is compatible with the PS3.
It's also a very simple procedure.

I think that guide is limited to the PS3 Fat, but the Slim looks even simpler (I own one).

I'd say buy an older 40GB model then buy a 750GB HDD off ebay for $150. Way better deal this way.
