So i got these brand new discounted a5+ a while ago. Ive always been a headphones or in ear guy but im really loving these speakers. Im ready to purchase a dac to improve my listening experience but im a noob so i have a few questions.

1. Should i be spending 100 dollars on a dac for these speakers? Would there be a significant improvement if i do?

2. Its going to be plugged in my computer only and my maximus hero viii motherboard supports optical and usb, which one should i use?

3. Any recommendations? My last resort would be the audioengine d1 but i dont need a headphone amp, i alreafy have a fiio for that. Ive heard good things about MUSE dacs for their price/performance ratios and some recommendations about the modi 2.

Thanks guys

You might get some audio benefit. Difficult to predict.

$79 for the first generation Schiit Modi: http://www.amazon.com/Modi-USB-Digital-Analog-Convertor/dp/B00CICPN0K/. Schiit has said on this forum that there's no real audio quality advantage in the Modi 2. Just the Modi 2 can handle higher sample rate files. The Modi does up to 24/96, the Modi 2 up to 24/192. If you don't know if you need that, then you don't need that :)

Is it worth it though? A dac for a pair of 400 dollars speakers. Asus keeps boasting about their great onboard audio tho im not sure if the dac on there is any good. Also doesnt optical go up to 192khz?

Don't think it's worth it. I ran my a5+s through asus sound card and ODAC and there were no noticeable difference. If it was a laptop it would have been worth it. Spend the money on a subwoofer instead, adds some nice low end thumps to the speakers :)

I already said I can't answer that question for you.

What do you need 192khz for?
