Would you rather:

Get an MDR-V6 ($75 CLOSED) + Shure SCL4 ($100 IEM) + KSC75 ($15 OPEN Portable) + Grado SR60 ($69 OPEN) ~ $260

or go for one monster

like the Sennheiser HD600 or AKG K701 or Denon D2000 ~ $260

?

I'm very happy with one decent IEM (Head-Direct RE2) and one decent can (Senn HD485's) and a little amp (my brand-new, less than 10-hour FiiO E3.) However, I use these mostly for my portable setup- the Senn's are sometimes on movie/TV duty, and do an excellent job for this.

Its really up to you, but headphones are like girls, it about quality not quantity :p You can only listen to one at a time.

True but you may want different designs for different purposes. I want IEMs for traveling and on the go because they're compact and block out outside noises. I want open for home because I prefer their performance and there are times I want a closed either for home or at work to not bother others or be bothered by others, but would rather not wear an IEM because I don't generally find them as comfortable.

Beyond that, certainly some people like to have multiple headphones because they may feel or sound different and may suit their particular mood or the music they want to listen to. Nothing wrong with that, it's much easier to do that with headphones than speakers and to some extent I find headphones tend to have more sonic compromises than a good pair of speakers anyway. Either way, with my multiple pairs of headphones they still cost less than my speakers

If you have an amp/source that is able to drive them, I'd say go with hd600/k701/d2000.

Go for multiple headphones. It's much more satisfying (different phones for different uses) for the beginning and you get to train your ears much better that way. Later on (if you feel the need) you could do some more extensive research and buy some nice cans and amp.
From mine research and experience I'd recommend you this for that money: Closed-D1001/Aurvana Live! (about 80$), Open-SR60 (69$), and IEM-SCL4 or C751 (both are about 100$ i believe).

I wouldn't want just one headphone because if I did have one, it would have to be an IEM. I need the isolation of an IEM for my daily, mass transit commute. I would hate to have to listen to an IEM all day though. I much prefer full sized, open headphones. A full sized closed headphone is good if occasionally you need some isolation at home. I usually use one a few times a month.

Multiple HP Setup. UE Super.Fi 3 ($78 IEM), AT ATH-AD700 ($100 OPEN) & Denon AHD1001 ($100 CLOSED). Instead of AT ATH-AD900 ($279 OPEN).
Good Luck & Happy New Year

Hehe, unfortunately you're not going to get anything *amazing* by audiophile standards with $260.

I love my EP-630s for portable listening and HD-555s for home listening. If someone gave me an HD-650 free of charge, I'd probably sell it for the money; what I've got is good enough for me.

Disagree. Can get the AD900, D2000, SR225 and others around that price if you look around. And even owners of HD650, K701 can appreciate the sound of these headphones.

I own both the HD650 and ATH-AD900... the 900s are a great set of cans. Each of them has their strengths which is why I have them both!
