Heard the HE-400I for a little again, they're alright for the money I suppose. ($260ish dollarydoos, that doesn't really get you much these days ehhh?)

Earpad glue has failed though, needed to superglue them back on. So in terms of build quality they aren't the best, I've heard there's lotsa complaints here and there about Hiifiman QC/build quality.

Need to build a DAC/amp for the above, it's for a friend so I'll have to keep it below $100, that's gonna be reaaaaal fun. CS4398 based like the Project H... so there goes $30, dunno what to do about the amp though. There are so many cheap kits now on Aliexpress, it's crazy.

I don't have thaaaat much enthusiasm for audio anymore, and Australia is the worst place to do a run of anything. XD

But I'll try to heavily document anything that I DIY for this project, so others can follow along. I wonder if I can approach state-of-the-art for $100 before chassis costs, I've been itching to give my analysers a good workout.

Mmm if you weren't in such a terrible area for pricing I just take whatever from JDSLabs and go with it. Saves the pain of dealing with the snake oil and lack of transparency from just about every other brand.

I can't look at retail audio products the same now that I can actually build things. =P (I think a JDS DAC + amp combo will be around $250ish dollarydoos, a bit over budget)

I think I'm gonna order some $60 dollarydoo completed amps from taobao, and just gut the electronics and keep the casework+transformer. This way I don't have to drill holes, and the enclosure will look nice....ish.

But CS4398 is old now, have you considered the newer AKM chips like AK4490 or AK4493? Cheap too and better specs.

Yeah good shout, it looks like AK4490 is all the rage now in the DIY DAC scene, it can do high res too. There's even some ESS sabre DACs for very little money.
