Happy birthday to Jason! That was one crazy-tall cake you had, hahaha.

It was my first time at The Source AV, and what a time it was. Thank you to Jason for hosting the event in the first place, and thank you to AudioQuest for donating a Dragonfly Black as one of the raffle prizes! I can't wait to try it out with my phone once I get the proper OTG cable.

Anyway, I made a few videos using my in-ear binaural microphones to capture the audio in the way I heard it; please wear headphones to get the full effect of the recording.

^ That was a craaaazy room. I've never seen so many McIntosh products in a single room before.

I'll probably update this post with some photos after I get some sleep.

Thanks for the videos.

Here's my final video footage from Saturday's event.

And on that note, I'm pretty excited for next week's event at The Source AV featuring Questyle's products, including speaker-related stuff. I have no idea how wireless speaker amps work, so it should be an interesting thing to experience.

How was today's event?  Did anyone learn or listen to anything new?

Wish I could have been there (friend bereavement).

Looking forward to attending the next one.

The Enigmacoustics Athena A1 amp as there, which is new to the Source events.  These were the final production models and they sounded pretty good from my brief listen.

I didn't attend the speaker vs headphone event as they were only doing 4 people at a time and I've done something similar before so I wanted to let others check it out.

Overall, another fun event.  Oh and @chowmein83 won a QP1R!

I got there towards the end of the event, but I was mostly curious to see/hear the Questyle wireless speaker monoblock system in action. I wasn't disappointed!

Here's kind of the setup for the listening sessions:

Basically Bruce from Questyle was selecting tracks from the QP1R which was fed into the wireless transmitter via USB (or maybe it was Toslink). That signal was sent wirelessly to the R2001 monoblocks, which does do the digital to analog conversion too. Those amps were powering the EnigmAcoustics Mythology M1 speakers, which is, like the Dharma D1000, a dynamic driver for lows/mids and an electret/electrostatic tweeter from 8-40 kHz.

After hearing it on the speaker setup, the same track was played back on the QP1R and D1000.

I had previously heard the D1000 before, and I love it, so I was in the back seats just listening to the speaker audio. I haven't heard an electet/electrostatic driver being used in a speaker before other than in Martin Logan speakers that I've heard in a Best Buy with non-ideal listening conditions. Like electrostatic headphones though, and the D1000, it seemed to produce the upper-midrange and treble frequencies with ease and I was impressed with how much space and air it was able to convey. I recently glanced through an AES paper about listener preferences for speakers versus headphones for imaging and I have to say that I personally prefer the imaging that headphones can provide, being more pinpoint accurate to me in my experience than speakers (which requires perfect alignment to make the sound waves hit your ears with the correct timing), but speakers convey a much more realistic sense of space and recording environment.

It was even more surprising for me to hear that Bruce was only playing back CD-quality audio! Questyle's wireless system is the only system that can stream DSD128 audio, which is quite an impressive feat considering how much bandwidth that takes (1-bit audio * 128 * 44,100 Hz * 2 channels = 11,289,600 kb/s or 11.29 Gb/s). I asked Bruce about what he thinks of the MQA format since that format was designed with high-quality audio, low bandwidth in mind and he thinks MQA is too much change too late, essentially, which is similar to what Schiit Audio thinks. I'd have to agree with that too unfortunately.

EnigmAcoustics was featuring the Athena A1 amp. Holy smokes does it look pretty.

My only qualms with it are that there is pretty much zero EMI protection, and it is a fingerprint magnet. Other than that, it sounded pretty good to me when using it with the D1000. My ears may have been spoiled by listening to the D1000 on Questyle's "Gold Stack" beforehand, but I did like it more through the Athena than the CMA600i. The D1000 is a pretty bright headphone to me, but for whatever reason, just like the STAX headphones, my ears don't get fatigued by it. Maybe it's just an electrostatic technology thing, but my ears get fatigued if I hear bright dynamic or planar magnetic headphones. It's the weirdest thing ever.
