I guess, “portables” is a better word then “sporty”.

I’m looking for headphones for my Ipod, that I can wear at the gym or biking. I searched a little through the form and came up with these in my price range:

$20: Koss KSC35/75
$40: AKG K26P
$100: Sony MDR-SA1000
$160: Beyer DT 770-80

Other options I’ve been looking at are Sennheiser PX 100 or Etymotics, but now I’m too confused, little help pls?

Powerful, responsive low end is very important; sound quality is more important then comfort too, isolation not “very” important either. I can always use the MX550 if I need very light heaphones. These will be kinda like work/workout/travel headphones.

Thanks!

Senn PX100 comes highly recommended for that purpose, but I have not heard them before. Don't get canalphones, you get problems with microphonics and also if you are sweating they don't feel too good.

I dont think Id wear the SA1000's or the DT770's to the gym.

the first two are good choices though, Id add the sennheiser PX series to your list too.

Canalphones or IEMs would probably be your best bet for portable gym use. I've heard that for unamped portable use, the Etymotic 4P are some of the best, but look into the Shures (e2c, e3c, etc.), the Etymotic 6i, etc.

AKG also has K24P, which is ten dollars cheaper than the 26P. It is open, which will provide less isolation, but also your ears will not get as hot.

I have Senn PX 200s, which I like a lot for superportable/lightweight cans.

Those do not look at all like they would be sutiable for the gym or for biking -- you really need either IEMs or something more designed for vigorous actiivty that will not fall off of your head.

If you have a smallish head and/or are willing to sacrifice maybe a smidge of comfort, the KSC 55 sounds much like the KSC 75 and fits very snugly. I've used it for jogging a few times, but I have VERY large ears, and I found them slightly uncomfortable.

*edit* I forgot to mention that I have a pair of AKG K44s and they are DEFINATELY not ideal for using while being active. They have a very long cord and do not sit tight on the head.

I really enjoy my PX100's out of my Ipod when away from the homefront. IMHO it helps to decide first and foremost between sound quality and portability. Its seems that most cans sway towards one or other. I like an overhead style because Im constantly taking them on and off to hear things. With that being said the PX100 provide a great compromise. The have enough punch to make rock and electronic music engaging and they lack the forward almost grading approach that my Sr60's have. I have actually found myself listening to the PX100's at home over the Grado because of the fatigue factor. Amazon.com has great prices on the Senn stuff right now. They have the PX100 for $44.99 USD and free shipping. The other thing to not discount is the usefulness of the case. It nice to pack them up at the end of the day and just through them in my bag and go. That's just my 2 cents. Hope it helps.
PS.. HD 485's on the way.....and a review to follow.
