I use the 3's with my iphone 5, love it! Will the 40's be even better or should I not waste my money? The difference between my XBA-1's and 3's are massive, if the 40's aren't a decent difference I will probably pass.

Title says it all. I listen to practically everything, and what I'm mostly looking for in sound is richness, soundstage, and overall handling of all sounds, as well as good build quality. I can get them for a fairly similar price, so that's not really a factor.
