I bought the AKG Q701's and thinking about returning them as I feel like they lack bass(currently burning them in for about 70 hours and seeing if it helps). Also they just don't feel like they are worth the 300 dollars I paid. If not im looking at the denon d2000 or maybe something else.

I'm not looking to spend more then 320 or so. I will be using this on my computer hooked up to the asus xonar essence stx. No other amplification at the moment.

I guess I have a few options....
-Keep the Q701's
-D2000's
-DT880 or DT990 premiums
-DT880 or DT990 pro (maybe even with another 100 ish amp if its an improvement over my card?)

This is so confusing. Help

Heya,

If the Q701 was not bassy enough for you, then you are probably a basshead. And we have options for you.

The D2000 will be the one I would suggest right off the bat, if you can get it, get it. It's a linear/neutral headphone with sub-bass capability unmatched by others in it's class. It's an excellent headphone in all ways.
The DT880 is neutral, but bass capable, probably about the same or a touch more than the Q701 in that department.
The DT990 is much bassier and is one of the bassiest open-air headphones outside of Ultrasone and some higher-end headphones. The DT990 PRO is extremely bassy if you're after that, and the price is more attractive too.

By the way, the STX has plenty of amplification, you do not need a separate AMP at this time.

Other headphones for you to consider/read up on:

M-Audio Q40
Ultrasone HFI 2400 or PRO 2500

And again, I would definitely say go for the D2000 or Beyer DT990 PRO. Can't go wrong if you're after bass and good sound quality otherwise.

Very best,

May I suggest that you shop around a bit before making your next purchase--especially if you're in the U.S.  Just by way of example, the Q 701 was recently about $235 on Amazon.  Even with the recent price increase you can get a new one for $265 shipped.  This can save you some money and maybe expand your options.

He prob wants to buy from an authorized seller... Only items sold by amazon (not even fulfilled by amazon counts) are considered authorized by most companies.

The Beyerdynamic DT990 Pro 250-Ohm are great headphones if you want to feel like your in a movie theater.
The DT990 Premiums are going to be slightly more comfortable then the Pros, I have no complaints about the comfort of my 3 Pros.

Pro:

- higher clamping force
- more bass
- coiled cord
- simple old style "retro" look
- available in 250 Ohm version only
- easily replaceable headband padding with snap buttons
- no carrying case
- cheaper

Premium:

- lighter clamping force
- less bass, brighter, more "airy" sound
- long (3m) straight cord
- available in 32, 250, and 600 Ohm versions (the 250 has the same drivers as the Pro)
- comes with a carrying case
- it is possible to order a customized "Manufaktur" version for 299 Euros

You say the Pro version has more bass. Is this compared to the 250Ohm version of the Premiums? I'd love to see a frequency response  of both the Pro and Premium 250Ohm cans to prove this either way. Can anyone supply? I was looking into the Premium mainly for the straight cord and comfort factor.

I do not know of any site that has graphs for both of these. doctorhead.ru has the Pro and the 600 Ohm versions, and shows about 3 dB difference at the peak of the bass response. This may or may not be accurate.

I say get the DT990 Pro 250-Ohm for now, at least your saving yourself some cash.
And in a year or two, and you want to treat yourself, buy a nice $400 external DAC/Amp and get the Premium 600-Ohm then.

The Pro 250Ohm is bassier than the Premium 250Ohm version. It's from the extra clamping force applied by the headband. It makes it squeeze your head more and in turn reduces the treble, raises mid-bass.

I would say go with the pro model as you get more bass as well as an overall smoother sound.

You mentioned DT880, are you referring to Pro or Premium?
Which one has a better quality and heavier bass?
