Right now the M-100 prototype sounds just like that - its more like a "MLP2-100" with extra ultra-extended treble (its a new driver). It is audiophile mids+highs with LP2ish bass, it is quite intriguing on what to do next...  Only me, Jude and my #2 has heard it so far...I absolutely LOVE it, it is by far my fav headphone I've ever heard in my life... but I feel those looking for an M-80 sound may be a tad disappointed as it's bass is still a bit low-end shaking vs as as detailed as M-80.  Also, by virtue of its larger drivers vs M-80 the M-100 will perform better amped up.  Therefore, the wait will have to continue...  I need a Head-Fi focus group, stat!  Is there a big enough "medium-bass-head + extended treblehead club"?

M-80 Amped
Today listening to M-80 with some new amps + enhancements, wow...  I think no matter what I make next, M-80 will be my portable + gym headphone of choice for a long time as it fits nice around the neck and has such a small backpack footprint.  It's also very versatile for genres, been listening to some Frank Sinatra and classical lately.

Haha pick me pick me :D, but in terms of my bass thirst, a first degree bass boost with an e6 going to me hd25 is sufficient bass for me, I loved the lp2 bass except for maybe a bit too much impact that drowned out the detail (this is in my audiophile perspective). The mids was pretty good one of the better aspects, the treble was a touch murky, but not bad at all. All in all I just loved that mind blowing sound though XD. Not gonna lie as far as treble I'm with you all the way with the M-80 ear protection thing, but I still like extension, but not harshness ^^.
and OMG I'm psyched for this mlp2-100 ^^, probably not gonna buy it until aprilish though even if it comes earlier :<. Which amps may I ask work best with v-moda headphones in your opinion? I was thinking of getting a nice sub 100 really portable amp, like smaller than e7 size, looking at ibasso.

oh also wanna add in there that i noticed the great improvement of dynamics in the lp2 over the lp would love to see that gain :D.
Also I haven't actually heard the D1100, but apparently it has that big bass, and still has great sound quality (and I don't mean great sound quality for a bass can I mean just straight out great sq)

I apologize if this is the wrong thread to ask this question but I didn't think it really warranted its own thread.  Anywho:

I'm more or less about to hit the button on purchasing these however I was wondering if there are any suggestions as to what USB-DAC might complement these headphones well, preferably no more than around 60-70£ ($100-ish).  My main use for these will be listening to music from my laptop.  I've been eyeing the e10 but I'd hardly call myself too well-read when it comes to headphone amps/DACs, so all help is appreciated

Ok, i finally received my M-80 yesterday and all I can say is that I really like them. Comfortwise I think they still have to adapt a little bit to my ear but soundwise they sound superb.

The construction is really good and it feels like it'll last for age when you get it in your hands.

Now i'm thinking about making custom shields with the Elder Scrolls Oblivion logo because I really like it but I do not know how to remove those shields.... And I wish it was possible to get the shields in white :'(

Yeah I've been looking for something similar, and it seems the E10 or the Ibasso D-Zero are the best choices at that price range

When you order the shield kit, it includes a hex screwdriver.   We cannot anodize metal in white unfortunately, but I'll try out powder coating and other options in white shields for the future (mid 2012).

Hello Val, Thanks for the reply !

Well, I was thinking that you can't anodize metal in white but... can you do it on all the surface? That way you can take a black shield and keep the logo in black while you anodize the rest. It might be the cheapest solution to do it but of course your laser must be able to do it.

So I just picked these up after reading about them for far too long, but the mic isn't working when I plug them into my computer, is this because there is a seperate headphone jack from mic jack, and how is that resolved? I suppose I could be missing something stupid, but haven't figured it out yet.

I also remember someone saying there is a video showing how to adjust the headband, any chance I could get a link to that as they do clamp a good bit. Thanks

Received my M80 just before the weekend, and was able to test it out during some last minute christmas shopping, cooking and cleaning around the house, running errands, as well as just listening while lounging about.  Very pleased and suprised with the sound, very natural tonal balance, incredibly musical and easy on the ears.  Great bass response - boosted enough where you can rock out, but never invasive of the overall sound.  There is a slight midrange bump but being a grado-head it is not offensive to my ears, and the shout you get with the John Grado's is not present - this is a smooth can top to bottom.  The treble is a bit polite but I don't mind as it provides a smooth, easy-going experience, while still conveying plenty of microdetail as well as transient attack and response.

Build quality is insane, overall look and presentation is really polished - this is probably the nicest looking can, in a modern-can-wear-in-public-and-not-get-ridiculed vein.  I love my HP1000's but they do not fall in that same category and I would clearly get ridiculed if worn in public.  Comfort is really nice for a supra-aural, the cushions are soft and I don't feel the headband whatsoever.  Really really really impressed with about every single detail in construction.  The 45 degree angled connector is just icing on the cake, and shows how detail-oriented Vmoda is about their gear and the big picture, not just sound but also of presentation.

I am really enjoying these, and is probably the best non-iem portable can I have ever listened to.  Regarding IEM's, I have owned shures e500, 535, and JH13's, and I think I would still choose the m80 simply because they are really petite, don't need to plug in my ear, look great, and sound awesome, sacrificing some isolation.  The tonal balance is just so perfect to my ears - no shrillness or ringing on top, just a slight midrange and bass hump, yet very even and consistent from top-to-bottom without drawing your ear's attention to any specific point in the overall sound spectrum.  The overall gestalt is simply musical and incredibly fun.  I listen to all sorts of different music, from jazz to choral works (I am a choir director), with classic and current rock, indie, a cappella, and even some hip hop/RnB (listening to Frank Ocean as we speak), and everything sounds good.  Not as open sounding, with a flatter more compressed stage than my Grado HP1000, but that guy is just a beast and Vmoda really hit a bullseye in terms of the tonal balance with this can, and has nothing to be embarrased about being a $200 can.

Excited for the M100 as I think a true circumaural design can offer something unique and special, and I would hope Vmoda keeps the tonal balance exactly the same, and maybe just extend the treble a bit, maybe smooth out some of that midrange peakiness, and leave the bass the same, and I would probably pick it up in a heart beat. Never would consider myself a bass-head but after hearing the M80 a little bumped up bass never hurt anyone, reminds me of the JH16 in that regard. I would imagine the isolation would improve with a circumaural design, so that would really help getting the M-series from grocery shopping/work out/walk around the block mode, to possibly train/airplane/even lawn-mowing isolation capability, time will tell.  From what I gather I trust Vmoda will create something that will look great, be built like a tank, be very functional and practical to use in a variety of environments with all sorts of music, with a near-perfect tonal balance.  Kudos to Val and Vmoda for making all of this for around $200.

recstar24: That's a very good summary I reckon. I second you on the IEM comments. These are the first ever headphones I've wanted to take out with me to wear casually, though usually it's at a cafe/restaurant while on my iPad.  I did try borrowing a pair of ESW10JPNs but was always scared of damaging them and IEMs irritate me most of the time, even the better fitting ones.

The Apple computers >2009 I know all work, and many tablets do too.  PCs vary and most do not, perhaps the HP does but we haven't checked. We have a PC/Skype adapter I'll put for sale that turns it from one to two 3.5mm (mic + stereo), it is included with Remix 4S.

Here is the video showing me bending out/in... I wouldn't do it too often as they will naturally adjust over time, but like new sunglasses they sometimes need a slight adjustment for the optimal fit.

Enjoy!

Val, I sent you a PM a few days ago about my M-80s and about LP2s. I was wondering if you would be able to reply to it, or if there's a better email/form of contact that I'd be able to reach to have my questions addressed. Thank you.

COLOR SCHEME?
Quick q - do you like the M-80 Shadow or the LP2 Matte Black Metal color scheme better?  I love them both... its tough!

The Matte Black of the LP2 is a better look than the Shadow color of the M80s in my opinion.  Less fingerprints and smudges since there isn't any "glossy" plastic at all on them.  :)

Has anyone used the M-80's with the Z02 yet? I want more bass and I was going to buy LP2's, but I will put that on hold if the M-80's sound even better/bassier w/Z02s and my iPhone 4S.
