Pros: Impactful low end with excellent nuance in both sub and mid bass
Rich and sweet mid-range, lots of nuance to both instruments and vocals
Extended and airy without being offensive
Soundstage is remarkable, very holographic, layered and spacious
Cable and rest of accessories is good quality
Unique design that look like painted art
One of the current best sets under 1000$
Cons: Large shells, but still very ergonomic and I can use them for hours
Cable a on the thick side and not the most ergonomic

The rich sounding THIEAUDIO Origin

Disclaimer

I got Origin for free in return for a review, I am free to say whatever I want.

All impressions are my own subjective thoughts after having used them for a good time. These are my thoughts at this moment, and as time moves I might change my opinion.
This is also a very subjective hobby where everything from experience, anatomy or age will affect what we hear. Also keep in mind that it is easy to use bold words when talking about differences, while it may be perceived as a small change for you.
While I can perceive something as natural sounding, I do believe we can never get a perfect performance similar to what is achieved live.

Ranking System:
1 Very bad or unlistenable
2 Listenable but not good
3 Average
4 Very good
5 Exceptional or having a special sauce

My rating system highly values what is musical for me, so my rating will always be a subjective opinion.

AD_4nXfqCRiBZ3vockV7INpotXxdvIbKi6kW8V9PaHQg9j0MSQDfNtSa14687p5grNCmsnbSaC82R9gUp1bImHpFheNpS2_XbDlFZTi9bALWnD7JUhmT913cqBWk3ydW9VtV_4G37UcIliQgdv-gX4URKLYdgoqX

My audio preference is neutral with some warmth, I can also like forward midrange and treble if not excessive. I am a believer in having different tuned gears for different genres or moods instead of chasing the single perfect one.

Main music genres I listen to are metal, electronica, jazz and pop. I am a music lover, and can also listen to almost all the genres out there.

I have been into music gear since the mid 90s, gifted some big speakers at an early age. Then moved more and more into headphones with my entry being Koss Porta Pro and a Sony Discman.

I have tried playing many instruments over the years from piano to saxophone without getting far, this due to not having the biggest patience in learning to play.

My current favorites in Headphones are ZMF Verite Open and Beyerdynamic T1 G2.
My current favorites in IEMs are Alpha Omega Omega and Letshuoer Cadenza 12.
My current favorites in Earbuds are FranQL Caelum and Venture Electronics Zen 3.0.

Gear used in the main rig is Denafrips Ares 12th-1 DAC together with the Topping A90 Discrete headphone amp. I also have a Schiit Lokius I can swap in if I want to do a little analogue EQ.

Portable gear being SONY WM1AM2, HIBY R4 x Evangelion and iBasso DX180, with some dongles like HIBY FC6.

So what is THIEAUDIO Origin

THIEAUDIO Origin is a quadbrid IEM with 4 types of driver technologies and 8 total drivers per side, the set is priced at $849.

This is THIEAUDIO with their first model where they utilize a bone conduction driver, this is a 11mm full range driver that is tuned for the midrange and lower treble.
The low end is being carried by a dynamic driver in biocellulose and is 10mm, the mids and highs is covered by 4 balanced armatures. The BA is Knowles for treble and Sonion for midrange, with 2 Sonion electrostatic super tweeters to carry out the upper treble and air.

The packaging of THIEAUDIO is well done, nothing overly fancy but also feels more premium than many brands.

AD_4nXerOMYOBwjStYEDtUGHiI-4Dj26U95_2KPajsa4srli4q_93eN_tnyrewcqBIMMpWBn5NxtCdNUGwsS0wqmGJF2ccGkj-SBFCTSSyiqVdp6_UJ0V6PZAcc0AAIyUI6ICvGqDCVQPJ3Zlu9Wb0N-aa--Tcs

The included accessories are nice, they have a new type of hard storage puck that replaces the oversized old THIEAUDIO case. The puck is much nicer and I love they have used blue Alcantara on the outside, the inside have gray Alcantara and make it very secure to store the Origin in.

The included tips are a pair of foam and silicon, both work for me and sound decent for being stock tips.

AD_4nXdoB_xUAU-B292vTZPSjiV2WzfcXl3N2Ej_KlH-rggBEKaZvdwROdqT-kCcwYJLZWtyZwbEOsDsMUYkYpiTADphskqT-_z_QPF8ABPi2SAdcCwARB9N_DqvCSobRPI17-UYoPV8v3TyVUZmfUIceGkrsSQ

The included cable is really nice and is the THIEAUDIO EliteNoir Cable, it is thicker than the old stock cable from Hype 4 and Oracle MKIII. But it does feel more premium and look very good together with Origin, the cable is modular with 3.5mm single ended and 4.4mm balanced jacks included.

EliteNoir Cable is both good sounding and well behaved, only negative would be its not as soft as the old stock cable.

Description of the cable:

THIEAUDIO EliteNoir Cable features high-grade components including a 7x7x0.08mm Silver Plated Over 5N LCOFC wire and a 16x7x0.06mm Silver Plated Over 4N LCOFC wire, meticulously crafted for optimal sound transmission. The cable’s structure includes 161 wires in a 20AWG configuration, with inner insulation and an outer layer of Smoke Black-Blue Soft PVC sourced from the USA. The EliteNoir is also equipped with a multi-plug system supporting 3.5mm and 4.4mm connectors, ensuring compatibility and versatility for various audio setups. Additionally, the cable incorporates Spiral Shielding and Litz Type 2 technology for enhanced durability and reduced signal loss.

The faceplate is having a refreshing design, it has what looks like a handcrafted painting of the sky and universe. There is some sparkle effect on the sides that gives it a little more premium look.

On the left piece here you can see the large bone conduction driver, I am no specialist but from what I understand this is not a BC that makes the shell vibrate but instead produces effect into the nozzle and sound.

The shell is made in the same black resin as their other models, the curvature is ergonomic and the nozzle is average in width(6.2mm) and length. Compared to most THIEAUDIO models this is similar in how it is designed, but the shell is deeper and sticks more outside your ears. Personally I find Thieaudio to have some of the most ergonomic designs, this is also true here even if it is large in size.

Sound impressions

Rich sounding timbre, has a more bass focused tuning than what's usual from Thieaudio. But is still resolving and very well extended in the treble, and has a balanced midrange that's extra nuanced.

Going to use the ranges here in review:

Details and soundstage

Detail in IEMs is down mostly to quality driver and how it amplitudes the frequencies, also when the driver is faster it also increases the resolution you hear.

Soundstage is very wide and deep, it's still an IEM but I do get a larger room feeling listening to the Origin than most IEMs. If you have heard MEST MKIII CF this is similar in how holographic and layered it is but even more spacious in depth, width and height. It also reaches more around me than most sets, not every set is this good at projection being 3D.

AD_4nXc6D0XqmblCiP2ba56g-T12d1oWAUHURx1JypmGV9dBbayTRPBYIj3rw4O8E8ebT7EiyvZXKkyre5YAjJlc1naavh2opD0XWjLRSFbTwhRfIZw16l6l5uZNnE34nouzfzt4LjG4-_sZR3_m3nEZPpt7EZt7

Bass

Bass is strong and goes deep, I wouldn't call this a basshead set but it does have quantity and quality that should suit most folks who love bass. Sub bass is really textured and can showcase the deepest notes with ease, be it throbbing synth bass lines or just the deepest instruments like the Organ.

Mid bass is more dense and impactful here than on the Impact2 driver used in Hype, Monarch MKIII and Oracle MKIII. So rock and metal especially comes more alive and sounds more realistic, both due to the punch but also how it decays not to slow or fast.

This is one of my favourite sets for bass performance at any price.

Mids

The midrange is tuned similar to HYPE 4 and Oracle MKIII, except for some change in upper mids. But this is where graphs do not show everything, I am not a graph person as I prefer to always just listen without watching measurements beforehand.

The midrange is more dense and texturered, I would at times believe it had more bass into the midrange as the instruments and darker vocals have extra authority to them. But as the graph shows there is no bass bleed, it manages being clean but more full bodied. This I believe is because of the bone conduction driver of Origin, it does add what I hear as an extra layer to the midrange. In a way this reminds me a little like how tube amps add second and third harmonics, it's not exactly the same but reminds me of it as the music gets something extra that often can feel lacking when going to other sets after.

The tuner of THIEAUDIO talked about the bone conduction in an interview and it does add some distortion to the sound, they fine tuned it to not be too strong. I believe they did it perfectly as the midrange is wonderful if you prefer texture over pure clarity, this takes me to upper midrange.

The upper midrange is present without being dampened, but is also less sharp than the previous THIAUDIO sets I have tried. There is no sibilance for me and there are no shouty tendencies, same that brass or high hats sound clear and natural without making me flinch.
A very good balance where I believe the bone conduction is the reason for how the upper mids can be both nuanced and have good presence but being less aggressive, it does take away some clarity. So some folks will probably prefer the cleaner and more pushed midrange of IEMs like Oracle MKIII.

Treble

Similar to Oracle MKIII this has beautiful highs, both ethereal and well extended. Due to the tonality being more full bodied in the lows it does take aways some focus from the treble, but also since this has less low treble bite than the Oracle MKIII. For some this is a huge positive as not everyone likes low treble being pushed too much, I like both approach and the way Origin does it make it more suitable for music when you're tired or if the music has too much treble bite already.

Synergies

This has been pleasurable on every source I have, while the best combo being from my desktop rig with Denafrips Ares 12th-1 and Topping A90 Discrete.
For portable sources I really loved it with SONY WM1AM2, it is more holographic and full sounding than my other DAPs when used with Origin.

Stock cable is excellent, I have no complaints about the sound with it. The only negative is that it is not the most comfortable cable I have used, I tried only two other cables with Origin that are more comfortable.
One being the PlusSound Dual-Copper that adds slightly more body to the sound, but it also sounds less transparent up top.
The Lavricables Master silver is a better match, as it sounds equally full bodied as stock cable but also has more clarity in the upper mids and treble. Just remember the changes are small with cables, and not needed to enjoy Origin.

I prefer silicon tips and not foam with Origin, stock tips are okay but my favorite is actually the Tangzu Sancai tips. They provide a balanced sound for me, Sancai helps me have a deep fit while also being comfortable. The Divinus Wide is also nice and actually have more bass than the Sancai, but I don't get the same deep fit with them so the stage is less holographic.

Comparison with THIEAUDIO Oracle MKIII

When evaluating the sets I use each of them over longer periods and also some shorter sessions swapping back and forth, it takes a long time and is not done in one sitting. The most critical comparison is done on my desktop setup that is highly resolving, with volume matching to take away loudness variance.

AD_4nXdD7JuPfcIhniM99H4rP_w_hd7aGdJ2C17y9shUU-id2Mg2oQafgZ84idgRzPbgI___zh8re9dTFKQzvWx5iKjHvw00muPEa6OyG3BTUCHY7yxNreWpPSJHoFAFJ6lR7x_bALYY15iy5e_oEpTpG7Df9ZzT

The spider chart is slightly exaggerated on some points to show differences, and it also made for myself to more easily position the end ranking of the IEM. The graph is also very subjective, and since most IEMs coming out are so good they all score high on each point.

This is the third generation of Oracle, it uses 2DD 2BA 2EST and costs $589. The shells have similar designed ergonomic grooves, but the Origin is a little larger.
The tuning of Oracle MKIII is what I would call neutral warm with good clarity. They do not compete with each other for sound as they sound different and are complementary to each other, I would pick the Origin for metal, hip hop, electronica and pop. Then use the Oracle MKIII for classical, jazz and soul, this does not mean they don't suit the other genres but just where I find each to excel more.
At first listen when swapping over from Origin to Oracle MKIII it can sound more resolving as the sound is cleaner and less warm, but they are close to the same in how capable they are. One a few tracks the Origin does seem to have some extra nuance that I think is just because of that BC that adds some texture to the midrange.

But if we compare the soundstage the Origin has both better layering and a larger stage in all directions, it does help it sound more holographic than Oracle MKIII.

The bass is made with the Impact2 driver on Oracle MKIII, this is a 2x 10mm DDs that are firing toward each other in a capsule and then out a sound tube. Would think 2x 10mm DDs is better than 1, but here Origin is to me the better one in quality.
Oracle MKIII has more of a sub bass focus, the Origin is more balanced between the two. The Origin does sound more bassy and impactful, both due to share quantity but also the driver seems to slam harder.

The midrange has a denser sound with more texture on Origin, it's less open and clear but more rich sounding that I assume comes from the BC. Due to this some music can be more fun on Origin and also more easy to listen to, but Oracle MKIII can sound more clear and intense.
For me it depends on music as I said above, but overall I prefer the Origin midrange as I find it has extra soul as I call it to the midrange in tonality but also detail. Both have bass that is clean around 250hz, so none of them have bass bleed into the low midrange. But to my ears the low midrange sound fuller on Origin. This is either because of the added bass quantity or just because of the BC element, I believe the latter.

Both have very good treble extension and sound airy and open, on my test track Hypnopaedia the airy notes lingers more with a little extra sparkle on Origin. But the difference is not big and I bet it would be hard to notice the difference if not going back and forth like I did for the review, on measurement they look similar but above 10kHz the measurement couplers are not reliable.

AD_4nXdG3SCxI_-nHi6Z8MOrzVn87oznVZOAdUjCvSlLd_cYrYKD2RAGX0g65XYfJndNpVW-M5j1t2ISzBmm-BQ2O16yjmRqPpYJhsA84u1RIoql7q9oRf6dLrWsANpQXyQMhGeicKVZFwg9Hamfa7NkDpDVS4Pu

Comparison with UM MEST MKIII CF

I will keep this much shorter as this is a much more expensive set than Origin, they have similar configurations with both being quabdrids using DD + BA + EST and BC. The shells are much smaller on MEST, but not more ergonomic. Both use bone conduction drivers, and it does affect soundstage and midrange with both sets.

The sound differs with MEST having less warmth/richness than Origin, this goes for both the bass and midrange. I would say that the bass quality is better on Origin, same goes for the midrange as it's more textured and nuanced than MEST. The MEST have more treble bite than Origin and appear brighter on music, this also affect the resolution making it more resolving than Origin.
Overall the sound is more textured on Origin over MEST, MEST is going more into the clinical clean style of sound.
Soundstage is deep and holographic on both, but here also I hear Origin as deeper while also being able to reach more behind and higher.

Considering the price of Origin this is very well done.

Conclusion

THIEAUDIO Origin is a nice new entry into their line-up of IEMs, it delivers a more warm tuning than the other models from THIEAUDIO. It still has the coherent tuning we are used to from them with excellent bass separation, balanced midrange and airy open treble. What separates the sound from other THIEAUDIO models I have tried is the impactful bass, richer midrange and larger holographic soundstage. The Origin is still resolving and does scale with gear, it's just that it's less clinical than some of their other models.

The use of bone conduction driver in the mids and treble adds an extra layer to the music, one of the better uses of the bone conduction driver where I actually notice it's doing something. There is always a question about if bone conduction does something or not, but here I do get something extra that is similar to the UM MEST series but even more.

I said the same about the Oracle MKIII but I will also say it here, this is one of the best purchases under $1000 now. The extra cost to get this over the Oracle MKIII is worth it for everyone who loves rich bass, with a more textured holographic sound.
I will give it a 4.5 star on head-fi with a subjective rating of 87/100, this ranks it among some of the best sets I have tried.

Top notch review. Thanks. I'm going to wait for a few months to see if they release a Monarch MK4 with BC and see how it compares, and then probably buy either this or the supposed mk4.
