Introduction: -

Today at Aural Cafe we will be reviewing Tanchjim Origin which features Tanchjim Audio’s latest DMT-5 Dual Magnetic Dynamic driver technology.

Tanchjim Origin is Tanchjim Audio's flagship offering in a single Dynamic-Driver-based IEM lineup which not only features Tanchjim's latest DMT-5 Dual Magnetic Dynamic drivers but also Tanchjim’s first IEM which comes equipped with three sets of replaceable tuning nozzles. Before we dig deeper into Tanchjim Origin let’s talk a bit about Tanchjim Audio first. Tanchjim is a professional audio brand which established in 2015 by a team of young Audiophiles. Tanchjim Audio's headquarters is in Nanning, a city in Southern China known for its Dragon Lake, hilltop fort and botanical garden. With a professional team of acoustic engineers, Tanchjim has released several flagship award-winning In-Ear monitors in the industry such as Oxygen, Hana and Prisim. Tanchjim Audio have also come with budget IEM offerings such as Tanchjim Zero, Ola, and One DSP. Recently Tanchjim Audio also came up with very successful portable dongles such as Tanchjim Space and Space Lite which we had the honour to review in Aural Cafe but it's Tanchjim Audio Oxygen which is Tanchjim's biggest gift to Audiophile community and is still relevant after so many years of launch.

Tanchjim Origin features a 10 mm Dynamic Driver in a patented fifth-generation Dual Magnetic and double cavity acoustic technology setup. The patented DMT-5 Acoustic Technology implemented in Tanchjim Origin resulted in not only pulling off the higher magnetic flux and stronger dynamics but also helping in achieving an ultra-low level of harmonic distortion at 1khz<0.056% @94dB. The ultra-low distortion along with the high-quality stainless-steel shell contributed to cleaner tonal balance, accurate timbre, wider soundstage, imaging and separation. The story doesn’t just end here but probably starts as the 10 mm dynamic driver features a specially designed composite diaphragm which is combined with Finite Element Analysis simulation to deliver a diaphragm that has high rigidity and equivalent compliance to achieve a hi-fi immersive experience and dynamics from the whole diaphragm.

The cavity cover has a waveguide design that is geometrically optimized with the help of Finite Element Analysis simulation design to improve the efficiency of modal distribution and high-frequency acoustic energy transfer. Very high-quality Monolithic brass is used by the Tanchjim Audio team in CNC high-precision machining which says a lot about the focus that which Tanchjim Audio team gave to come up with their patented DMT-5 Acoustic Technology setup. Moreover, there are special radian corrugations on the inner wall of the waveguide cover which help in affecting and suppressing the radiation angle of sound source vibration to achieve ultra-low distortion and clean tonal balance which ultimately forms the core of hi-fi sound.

The Tanchjim Audio team for the first time implemented a replaceable conduit design on their IEM, Origin to unlock more modes. The high-quality replaceable tuning nozzles are easiely unscrewed and replaced through the quickly disassembled thread structure in our experience while listening to different genres of music. The IEM comes fitted with Standard conduits along with Dynamic and Light conduits in the box. According to the Tanchjim Audio team, the inner cavity geometry of the three conduits of Origin is slightly different bringing different resonance effects and unlocking more modes. The Origin comes with a rear cavity structure and leakage Valve which is implemented with the help of FEA simulation Design to effectively manage air pressure inside the IEMs and to achieve the immersive dynamics.

When it comes to Tanchjim’s Design language the Tanchjim Audio IEMs and dongles have always followed very simple, elegant and visually aesthetic designs. The Origin is no different and follows a similar elegant premium design language. The Tanchjim Origin comes in a grey square-shaped medium-sized cardboard box which is covered by a white colour sleeve. The front part of the sleeve is dominated by the Tanchjim Origin photo while the frequency graph and other specifications can be found at the back of the sleeve. Removing the white colour sleeve the grey colour cardboard box can be seen along with the Tanchjim’s logo (The Angel of Prosperity) placed right in the middle of the box. On unboxing, we are first greeted by the manuals and quick guides tucked cleanly inside a white square envelope. After the manuals, we are greeted by the Origin IEMs nicely placed at the top section of the box along with the tuning nozzles being placed in between the IEM shells. The Tanchjim Origin comes with Tanchjim’s proprietary six pairs of T-APB ear tips which are placed in the bottom section of the box just below the IEMs. Three pairs of ear tips in S, M and L sizes are for lower frequency while the other three pairs are exclusively for higher frequency. The high purity 6N Litz Oxygen Free Silver-plated Copper cable with 3.5mm termination can be found placed inside the beautiful white waterproof carry case at the bottom layer of the box. All in all, we can say that the Tanchjim Origin comes with very high-quality accessories and a premium unboxing experience. Build & Design Concept: -

The Tanchjim Origin’s shells are made using high-quality 304-grade stainless steel with Tanchjim’s logo etched on the right shell while the model’s name ‘Origin’ is etched on the left shell. The shells of the Tanchjim Origin are ergonomically designed with a more scientific inclination angle of the nozzle resulting in better isolation and comfort for a longer duration of usage. The added isolation helps us listen to the higher frequency of the soundtrack on Tancjim Origin even on moderate volume; thus, we welcome this updated nozzle design. The other unique feature updated on Tanchjim Origin over its previous flagships is the use of a Double Composite Strainer. The composite strainer is composed of a stainless-steel filter on the outer side to condense moisture and impurities vis-a-vis ensuring high-fidelity sound transmission while the inner layer of the DCS is composed of Dust and Waterproof Resistant acoustic strainer to make high-frequency sound smoother and natural. All in all, when we see the design and quality of Origin shells' lightweight high-quality SPC cable and other accessories we can confidently say that the Tanchjim Audio team has focused on each aspect of the Origin and tried their best to present us with a premium hi-fi IEMs which doesn’t only sound great but comes with a better fit over their previous flagship IEMs.



Sound Analysis: -

We would like to state here that our sound impressions are based on the Tanchjim Origin Standard conduits. The effect of the Dynamic and Light conduits on the sound frequency will be discussed separately in the Synergy Part.

• Tonality: - After listening to different kinds of soundtracks across different genres we can say that the sound tonality of Origin is neutral with a hint of warmness across the frequency. We at Aural Cafe also feel that the latest 10 mm Dynamic Driver helps in adding a tinge of warmness to the whole frequency so that the timbre of the instruments sounds natural and realistic than rather sounding dry. We would also add here DMT-5 Acoustic Technology setup has been implemented superbly in Origin making it worthy of Tanchjim Audio’s flagship single-DD IEMs. The DMT-5 Acoustic Technology setup is the brain of the Tanchjim Origin and is responsible for high-fidelity technicalities. We especially enjoyed listening to the Progressive Metal music on Tanchjim Origin.

• Lows: - The lows on Tanchjim Origin are tuned keeping in mind its neutral signature. The Lows in Tanchjim Origin are precisely tuned and don’t bleed rather merge smoothly with the Mids. The mid-bass response is tight with the right speed and attack. The sub-bass rumble is decent but controlled and might not be able to satisfy the bass heads. We here would like to add that the Tanchjim Origin being a Single-DD IEM loves powerful warm musical sources and, in our case, the low frequencies reached their best while using it with sources such as Dethonray DTR1+ and Dethonray SG1 Gold. The DMT-5 Acoustic Technology setup here plays a great role in adding speed and dynamics to the whole low frequency along with top-notch clarity. We enjoyed listening to tracks such as ‘Party Monster’ and ‘The Hills’ by the Weekend but yes, we would love a bit more rumble in the Sub-bass region.

• Mids: - The Mids are again tuned in a very balanced way merging smoothly with lows and highs. The Mids on Tanchjim Origin are neither forward nor recessed but very precisely tuned with lots of resolution and soul. Both the male and female vocals have high fidelity clarity and texture due to low distortion achieved through the updated setup and become really handy while listening to complex tracks and Progressive Metal genres of music. The lower mids are decent but lack body, it’s the upper mids which is the star of the show. The upper mids have a superb body. clarity, air without any shouting. We really enjoyed listening to ‘Arziyan’ from the movie Delhi-6 composed by A.R. Rahman and Javed Ali and Kailash Kher on vocals, ‘Moh Moh Ke Dhaage’ composed by Anu Malik with Monali Thakur on vocals and finally, we enjoyed listening to ‘Eternal Rains will come’ by the Swedish Prog-Metal Band, Opeth.

• Highs: - The highs on Tanchjim Origin are tuned in a very referenced and balanced way. The high frequencies on the Origin are quite resolving and refined along with decent sparkle and micro details. There is no harshness in high frequency and thus becomes suitable for a longer duration of usage. The upper treble is smooth like butter with a decent amount of air. We had a good time listening to ‘Stairway to Heaven’ by Led Zepplin on Tanchjim Origin on Dethonray Listening M1 with the Linum SuperBax cable.

• Soundstage & Imaging: - We would strongly say that Tanchjim Origin is one of the best IEMs in terms of technicalities we have come across (Considering the Price) being in this hobby for the last 8 years now. The Soundstage is great both in terms of width and depth and scales well with the Sources. The separation, dynamics, and imaging are precise, and top-notch experienced at this price range. We really loved listening to Progressive metal rock numbers such as ‘Harlequin Forest’ by the Opeth due to top-class separation and soundstage. The imaging was top-class precise while listening to ‘Ramta Jogi’ composed by A.R. Rahman and sung by Sukhvinder Singh and Alka Yagnik. We also loved the timbre of the instruments while listening to ‘Dream On’ by Aerosmith.

• Synergy: - The Tanchjim Origin is an easy-to-drive IEM, but scales very high with powerful sources. The Single 10 mm composite DD in Tanchjim Origin loves powerful sources and the Dynamics, Soundstage and Imaging reach to a different level with Sources such as Dethonray Listening M1 and Dtr1+. We would also like to inform you that the Tanchjim Origin responds well to the Source matching and merges really well with warm musical sources, Dethonray SG1 Gold in our case. So, if you are an audiophile who wants to test your sources' capability then Tanchjim Origin can come in very handy in this case. When it comes to ear tips, we loved it with Divinus Velvet, and stock narrow bore tips over wide bore ear tips although the wide bore adds a bit of air to the overall frequency of the Tanchjim Origin. When it comes to cables the stock cable performs well considering the neutral tonality of the IEM but the Linum Dualbax brings the mids a bit forward while the Rhapsodio Copper Cable adds a bit more musicality to the whole sound frequency. We would like to also talk about the replaceable nozzle in this part of the review. So, the Tanchjim Origin comes with three pairs of replaceable nozzles. The Tanchjim Origin comes fit with the Standard nozzle out of the box along with Dynamic and Light pair of nozzles. We tested the effect of Dynamic and Light conduits on the sound frequency with the help of neutral sources such as Aune M1p, iFi Go Bar KENSEI and Dethonray DTR1 in our case. We would like to say that the Light pair of nozzles make the soundtrack a bit more reference while the Dynamic pair of conduits add a bit of dynamics and fun to the whole frequency and become handy and fun while listening to hip hop genre music, but we were ‘Comfortably Numb’ with the balanced Stock Standard conduits.

Conclusion: -

We would like to conclude this review by stating that we really enjoyed class-leading technicalities in Tanchjim Origin considering the price range. The DMT-5 Acoustic Technology setup is no gimmick and forms the brain of the Tanchjim Origin while the 10 mm composite DD forms the heart. The Soundstage, Transient response, Tonal balance, clarity and imaging are very very precise. We also enjoyed Tanchjim Origin as it responds well to source matching which becomes fun for Audiophiles like us. The added pair of Conduits is just a bonus and caters very well to the ever-demanding value-centric Audiophiles. We would also like to add that we would love a bit more sub-bass rumble and texture along with more body in the lower mids area but if you are in this hobby and want to enjoy and experience top-notch technicalities without breaking the bank then this IEM becomes an easy choice considering the built quality, premium accessories and sound technicalities.

The Tanchjim Origin is known for its meticulous design and robust build quality. The IEM features a sleek metal construction that feels solid and durable. However, the mirror finish, while aesthetically pleasing, is prone to fingerprints and scratches, which can be quite annoying. The carved 3D logo on the back of the IEM adds a nice touch, but the matte finish around the logo tends to wear off after some use.

Comfort and Fit
Despite its metal build, which can feel a bit heavy in the hand, the Tanchjim Origin is surprisingly comfortable to wear. The weight is not noticeable once the IEMs are in your ears, and they do not cause ear fatigue even after long listening sessions. This might cause some trouble with the fit of aftermarket eartips, potentially affecting the seal and, consequently, the sound quality.

Compared to similarly priced competitors like the Dunu Falcon Ultra and SimGOT EA1000, the Tanchjim Origin's cable functionality is solid but could benefit from a more sophisticated design to complement its overall quality in the over $200 USD range.



The stock tips provided with the Tanchjim Origin deliver a balanced sound profile with no major issues, ensuring a satisfactory listening experience out of the box. However, for audiophiles looking to fine-tune their sound and comfort levels, aftermarket options like the Azla SednaEarfit Max offer noticeable improvements. The Tanchjim Origin proves to be remarkably efficient across a wide array of sources in my testing experience. It consistently delivers excellent sound performance, adapting well to different devices and configurations. One standout observation is its exceptional synergy when paired with the Asus ZenFone 10, where it provided rich sound quality with ample volume and clarity. Even at 70-80% volume, the output remained impressive, delivering full sound with perfect impact.

In terms of pairing, I found that it didn't pair as well with the Questyle M15, occasionally producing slightly energetic sound signatures. However, it performed excellently with devices like the Fiio BTR7, Cayin RU7, and Shanling H5, demonstrating its adaptability across neutral, neutral-warm, and warm source types.

Overall, the Tanchjim Origin's versatility and ability to deliver high-quality sound across diverse equipment make it a standout choice for audiophiles looking for consistent performance and compatibility with various audio setups.

When I first received the Tanchjim Origin, I was intrigued by the inclusion of three tuning nozzles, typically a feature aimed at offering diverse sound profiles to cater to different listener preferences or music genres. Initial Impressions and Testing
Spending several hours testing each of the three nozzles, I eagerly anticipated distinct sonic variations that would enhance my listening experience. However, to my surprise and disappointment, all three nozzles—Light, Dynamic, and Standard—delivered virtually identical sound signatures. Whether I switched between them, I couldn't discern notable differences in bass response, midrange clarity, or treble extension. This consistency across all three nozzles was unexpected, especially considering the potential for nuanced adjustments in sound that tuning nozzles typically offer.

Comparison with Other IEMs
In contrast, I have experience with other IEMs in a similar price range that effectively utilize tuning nozzles to provide meaningful variations in sound. For example, another model offered distinct nozzles for enhanced bass or balanced sound profiles, each significantly altering the listening experience to suit different genres or personal preferences. This flexibility not only broadened the IEMs' appeal but also demonstrated their capability to adapt to various musical contexts.

Conclusion and Thoughts
While the Tanchjim Origin excels in other aspects such as overall sound quality, build design, and comfort, its implementation of tuning nozzles falls short of expectations. The lack of discernible differences among the three provided nozzles limits the IEMs' versatility and customization potential compared to competitors. Despite its commendable sound performance, the Tanchjim Origin misses an opportunity to offer users meaningful tuning options that could further enhance their listening enjoyment.

For audiophiles and music enthusiasts seeking IEMs with versatile sound customization through tuning nozzles, the Tanchjim Origin may not fulfill those expectations. However, its strengths in sound quality and build make it a solid choice for those prioritizing other aspects of IEM performance.




Tonality
The Tanchjim Origin exhibits a balanced and versatile tonality that caters to a wide range of musical preferences. Here's a breakdown of its tonal characteristics across different frequency ranges:

The bass response of the Tanchjim Origin is balanced and controlled, with a focus on sub-bass. It delivers punchy and clear lows that do not overpower the mids, making it suitable for genres that benefit from precise bass presence without excessive boominess. However, if you're a bass head looking for powerful, booming bass, you might find the Tanchjim Origin lacking in output.

Sub-bass
The sub-bass on the Tanchjim Origin has good rumble and is well-controlled. It doesn’t bleed into the mids or mid-bass, maintaining clarity and separation throughout. The sub-bass is excellent in quality and detail, though its neutral presentation can sometimes make it sound less prominent. This can be a plus if you prefer a more balanced and accurate bass response.

Lose Yourself to Dance by Daft Punk:This track features a prominent sub-bass line, and the Tanchjim Origin handles it perfectly. The sub-bass rumble is present and detailed, providing a solid foundation without overpowering the rest of the mix. However, the neutral tuning means that the bass doesn’t have the exaggerated thump some listeners might expect. If you appreciate a clean, detailed bass that doesn’t overshadow the mids and highs, you’ll find this presentation appealing.

Mid-bass
The mid-bass is punchy and controlled, though it lacks a bit of body. It is fast and has great speed, making it suitable for complex tracks that require precise bass articulation.

-The Count of Tuscany by Dream Theater:This track has a complex bassline that the Tanchjim Origin handles with detail and dynamics. The mid-bass punches through without overwhelming the other frequencies, providing good separation and a detailed sound. However, the lack of a fuller mid-bass presence might leave some wanting more warmth and impact. This track showcases the IEMs' ability to keep up with fast, intricate bass parts, maintaining clarity even in busy passages.

Personal Experience and Additional Details
Using the Tanchjim Origin for various tracks, I've noticed that its bass performance shines in genres that rely on precision rather than sheer power. For example, electronic tracks with deep sub-bass lines, like Daft Punk's, are rendered with impressive clarity and control. The sub-bass is present and detailed, but never overwhelming.

On the other hand, rock and metal tracks like those from Dream Theater benefit from the fast, articulate mid-bass. The Tanchjim Origin's ability to handle complex basslines without muddling the sound makes it a good choice for these genres. However, the slightly lean mid-bass might not satisfy listeners looking for a richer, more impactful bass experience.

The midrange on the Tanchjim Origin is forward and detailed, with a slight warmth that adds richness and body to both vocals and instruments. However, the forward nature of the midrange might not appeal to everyone, particularly those who prefer a more laid-back sound signature.

Male Vocals
Male vocals on the Tanchjim Origin are presented cleanly and naturally. The slight warmth in the midrange adds a sense of weight and texture, making male voices sound full and realistic. This quality is particularly beneficial for genres like jazz and acoustic music, where the authenticity and presence of the vocals are crucial.

Just The Two Of Us by Grover Washington, Jr.:The male vocals in this track come through with a natural warmth and clarity. The Origin’s ability to provide texture and weight to the vocals enhances the overall feel of the performance, making the listener feel as though they are experiencing the song live. However, some might find the forwardness a bit overpowering depending on their preference.

Female Vocals
Female vocals benefit from the Tanchjim Origin’s good extension and lively presentation. The smooth energy ensures that female vocals are delivered with clarity and without any harshness or sibilance, making the IEMs suitable for long listening sessions without causing ear fatigue.

Hold On by Amber Rubarth: Amber Rubarth’s voice is rendered with a smooth energy that captures the emotional nuances of her performance. The clarity and extension in the midrange allow the listener to fully appreciate the richness of her vocals. The Tanchjim Origin’s ability to handle female vocals with such detail and smoothness is impressive, though it may be too lively for some listeners who prefer a more neutral presentation.

Instrument Clarity
The Tanchjim Origin excels in delivering clear and distinct instruments, ensuring that each instrument can be heard separately and with great detail. This contributes to a rich and dynamic sound, though it may highlight the deficiencies in lower-quality recordings.

Just Take My Heart by Mr. Big:The electric guitars in this track have a dynamic presence, with each strum and note coming through clearly. The piano and trumpets are also well-defined, making the song’s instrumental sections as engaging as the vocal parts. The separation of instruments ensures that complex arrangements do not become muddled, allowing for a more immersive listening experience. However, the detail can sometimes reveal imperfections in the recording that might go unnoticed with less resolving earphones.

Additional Notes on Instruments
Guitars: Guitar presentations are particularly strong, with each note and strum articulated clearly. The slight warmth in the midrange adds richness, enhancing acoustic guitar performances and making them sound more lifelike. This can be a double-edged sword, as the detailed representation can be unforgiving to poorly mixed tracks.
