Sony X Headphones MDR-X10

I'll come back and put a full review up, suffice to say these have a lot of bass, coming from the XBA line.  They are by far the neatest looking cans that Sony's released, but fragile indeed, as the cups scratch easily.  In fact, this would be the first set of headphones that I have scratched, and I've had a lot of headphones in my time. But unlike most celeb endorsed headphones, you can do single ear monitoring.  So for real DJs that spins the vinyl and must match up the beats, I think these will work quite well as its presentation emphasizes the bass and the beat.
 
Lots of bass up front, but very tight and punch, and doesn't really get messy and flabby unless you EQ your source to massive bass levels.  However, in all of the bass the midrange sounds disappears into the background.  There's plenty of treble details to pick up, but again, it gets lost with the overwhelming bass, relatively speaking.  Its presentation is very much a check shaped presentation, extra emphasis sub 250Hz, and a curious notch around 3kHz that your EQ may or may not be able to handle.
 
The large earpads are quite comfortable but gets very hot in short time.  It's advantageous if you're north of Arctic circle or do not like Active Noise Canceling.  It does isolate quite nicely.  However, the large earpads trap heat like no other.
 
For the street $100 (may have to wait for a sale and/or coupons), it's better than most other celeb endorsed headphones, which also tend to go with the check shaped presentation. But your money is probably better spent elsewhere.  

Build Quality & Design
The build quality on these isn't so good in the long run, the entire headphone is mostly constructed out of plastic the only metal part on these cans would be the earcups, when it's held in the hands the headphones do feel a bit flimsy and light; because of this they gave me a bad first impression at first, but i got used to it. Its not so bad once you get used to it. Now my biggest complaint about these headphones deep down in my heart, so sincere, THEY SCRATCH EASILY, when i say that they scratch easily "THEY SCRATCH EASILY". The second day I had them they scratched, now you must know, I treat all of my headphones with care, i've never scratched any of my Headphones. These were the first, this is my biggest gripe about these cans.
Now the design on these headphones were pretty good except for some cheap plastic parts on the headphone. but the look of this headphone is pretty good i must say especially in red. In my opinion these headphones look fantastic. But i wish that sony could've made the earcups a bit smaller, because when your wearing them the headphones look weird on the head, the earcups stuck out to much to the point that you don't want to wear them in public. Besides that i'm pretty happy with the design and look of these headphones.
 
Comfort
These headphones are very very very very very comfortable no complaint besides the fact that your ears will get sweaty after half an hour worth of music listening. Due to the fact that that the earcups are not very breathable.

Sony supplies you with everything that you really need with so no complaint there.
 
Audio Quality
Here is where is gets interesting, now the Sony mdr X10 has a linear frequency response. The Lows hit so low and the bass sounds very deep, and its the best bass i've ever heard from a headphone, besides the audio technica ath m50, but the bass on the mdr x10 sounds very good. The midrange sounds very good just needs to be more forward. The treble isn't the best i've heard, honestly the treble isn't very good at all. This is what these cans lack the most is the treble. If sony increased the treble just a little more, these headphones would be fantastic. But they're not, but they sound pretty good.
 
Value
So these headphones used to be priced at $300, at this price your paying a little to much for what your actually getting. But recently Sony has a sale for selling these cans for $100. At this price it doesn't get any better than that, its basically a steal to what they're priced at. So at this price for $100, its very well worth the price.

These are some great cans, but they do have some faults. The lows and the highs are very good, but the middles tends to fade out. I would say that these cans would sound best with some sort of electronic, techno, hip-hop, or pop. Ive also noticed that they work well with country as well as rock. They have a pretty full sound for a pair of headphones and are the most comfortable cans i have ever worn. They are a bit ugly in my opinion but they do their job rather well. I would definitly recommend these to someone who listens to their music often and for an extended period of time.

 These are definatly my favorite cans . I bought them intending to amp them even though they have a low impedence they can take 3000mw . I have always been a bass head but i require clean bass but a lot of it!! Being in car audio for years ive always loved the sound stage u get from a dozen subs and a few thousand watts, but in headphones that sound pressure was un-ubtanable ..... until now these SONYS with some real power do the job nicely . I been running mine mainly on a fiio e12 with an lod to ipod on the go and at the house I use fiio's e9 or some times just the e12 I have other larger amps but these pair nicely. When you first get them they sound good so I didnt think I would have to really burn them in much. I was wrong after a couple hundred hours they sound better , much better. 
 
Comfort ;  They are deffinetly had to beat the memory foam doesnt get as warm as the xb 700 or the 5s . Sony did a good job on the balance as well, after a few min. you forget that you are wearing anything , just siting in the club with your eyes closed . 
 
Sound quality ; The frequency range is amazingly 6hz-22,000hz. The mids are actually not recessed , they stand strong with the highs without bieng too bright 

The only reason I have these headphones is because I got them for free. Having them for a few days now I thought that maybe if I the diaphragm loosen up they would get better.. no such luck. I'm listening to them currently and I feel that they are much to heavy in low frequencies and the mids seem to fade into the background. Highs are strong which is nice but they could do with much more accurate representation of the audible spectrum. This is what happens when a pair of headphones gets a celebrity endorsement. They fill them with bass for people who think that's what hi-fi is and charge an exorbitant amount of money for them. They are one of the more ugly sets of cans I have had the displeasure of seeing in a long while but hey, that's just one man's opinion; some people say they're nice looking. The only thing these headphones exceed in, in my opinion, is that they are very comfortable as is the way with most Sonys; although, I do wish they were a bit lighter since they feel like most of the weight is on my actual ear and not the top of my head. All in all, I would not recommend buying these but if you can get them for less than 150 and don't mind how hideous they are then go for it. Of course for less than 150 whats wrong with a pair of Grado SR80i's?


*update*
Less than one week into using these, the iPod compatible cord that came with it started to distort horribly when you change songs from the home screen unless you pull the cord out and plug back in. Also it will automatically pause your music if you open the internet browser. Way to go Sony.
