I bought one. Excellent hardware, very good sound. But...

- No way to direct the output to external USB DAC. I sent a message to SMSL, no answer so far...
- The Hiby app is extremaly basic and blutetooth connection instable. No option for Tidal nor Qobuz.
- Airplay is working, from time to time...
- Luckilly, DLNA is working, most of the time.
- No way to access internet radios

So mix feeling, excellent hardware but poor software.

@dominique-tanguy . Question: were you able to plug your SMSL into an external DAC (via the COAXIAL output or optical out)... & have success? @smallcaps ... what have you heard? Thanks for the post, eh.

I was looking for any information on SMSL digital player... this isn't very helpful or fair IMHO. I tbink the use of the Hiby app is brilliant. I use it on my phone and DAP's and its the best (totally free) player out there. If you buy a DP I think you should use it to play proper source material, preferably HD flac or DSD. If you use an SD card or usb HD it works great, just make sure you tag and store properly. Any musiclover who own more than 10 albums can tell you that you need to manage any collection properly. Filed with a workable system.

I can't say much about the DP3 since i own the DP5, which is newer and improved, but how can you not manage to tether it to a proper dac? You can use usb, optical, coax, BT... it's meant to be used as a player. There is a computer of some sort inside so you'll always get some erratic behaviour (I notice this mainly with usb input/outputs). Just a restart often helps. If this were a multi $k server I would have something to complain about, but it isn't. It's a very cheap alternative that works great and soundquality is great with the internal dac but infinite with external.

Streaming services I haven't tried, but you can use a phone or any cheap android device with an usb out. So far I stayed clear because i get lost in their menus and I don't need any AI to propose music to me (as if it knows what i feel like...). And internet radio... who needs that? Music while you work mixed with a lethal dose of government propaganda every x minutes... no thanks. I play music to forget all that mind numbing krap and find some peace.

For me it works great: i just plug in my harddisk and it plays without any noise in perfect quality with an easy to use familiar UI with a remote that never wears.
