Romi Audio BX2-Pro

So this is my review of the (Less Fox) Romi Audio BX-2 pro amp:

But for me it is portable indeed and I use it in my pocket every day. It gets hot. That’s a good thing … in winter

I am a long time Romi Audio gear user: Had my Calyx M modded by them. Also used some Romi Audio high-end cables (Zero, Realize) for my Focal Stellia back then. In addition I used their relatively affordable BX-1 for quite some time. Well, in fact, I used it on daily basis until I got this new (well, in fact used) high-end class-A amp here.

First off: The built quality of this device is incredible. No loose switches, everything is tight. Sockets for Pentaconn plugs are tight and the item itself looks great. It feels very heavy but has a good balance in my hands. The volume knob is fantastic to dial. And the gain boost (3 stages!) works as intended. I use the middle stage (in combination with my Calyx K DAC and the Austrian Audio Composer). Not the slightest detectible background noise. Only in the highest gain setting there is a little background noise to be heard (when no music is playing). But this is too loud for my headphone anyways and best used with headphones like Susvara, DCA Stealth and other higher demanding headphones.
The pro can also be driven with a PSU (with a Class A linear power supply or - and this is new - with a more affordable USB Type C PSU; you can find the products on the Romi Audio website). I am using the amp with the internal battery though. It lasts some hours (didn´t check).
It doesn´t have a luxury packaging. Now some of you guys do need that when paying that much for an amp. I myself won´t care. I would put away the box and never look at it again. So in my point of view I prefer to pay a bit less and let the Romi Audio team rather focus on the sound quality of the amp.
The amp can be powered with a PSU that can be purchased separately (also a USB-C powered PSU is available now. Just look around at their webshop!)


Sound? In one word: end game!

Overall it´s a neutral sound. No coloring to be heard. Just endless resolution. A very big, holographic stage with great layering, separation between left and right signals.

Bass is tight with such an incredible deep and visceral kick that doesn´t overdo in any moment but gives you a grasp of how the bass “sounds”. You hear the double bass´ strings moving through the air. You hear the rasping bass in rock songs. Such a power and a fundamental sonic foundation. Absolutely fantastic! (And I am saying this as a former drummer who wants/needs that bass

Mids are so true and tangible, I can´t stop listening to all those great voices that stand in the middle of the stage in a pristine way I have never heard before (not even with the Austrian Audio Full Score One desktop amp). Also the snare drums sound even more true-to-life than with the BX-1 (which was already great and hitting above its price-point - in comparison to the Astell & Kern PA10 the BX-1 sounded clearly better!). So the BX-2 pro manages to portrait a clear window into the mix. Damn, it´s just so good.

Highs are extended as hell but not in one single moment too much. Feels like the tiniest analogue extra benefit. The space opens up but you won´t be “dazzled” by the light, if you know what I mean. This is high-end stuff.

Well, what can I add? The Price of the “pro” is high but imho more than justified. Just imagine, guys, I am walking around my house with this gem in my pocket and listening through such an utmost top-quality audio-chain, where others would have been handcuffed to their desktop gear. This is going with me everywhere (work, vacancies, family visits etc.) and on every spot on this earth I will have the best possible sound.
