While I agree it's not way better than something double the price, but considering where mainstream users come form, the m50s are a better choice than the ones you mentioned. They're going to prefer the bass presentation, exciting/aggressive sound, looks, build quality, isolation, that fact it doesn't leak much over sound stage (which they will probably have no concept of) and an overall more balanced presentation (they will notice the bass before they will notice good highs and mids).    I'm not saying the m50 is better than the grado or the 558, but there will be no way I will recommend either of them over the m50 for someone who likes bassy mainstream music (i.e most audio beginners). Howver for classical and jazz definitely.

Do remember that these headphones are closed-back and thus not a fair comparison with open-back headphones like the ones you just mentioned.

If you put the bigger aperture [url=https://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=9325&tag=headfiorg-20&location=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2Fgp%2Fredirect.html%3Fie%3DUTF8%26linkCode%3Dur2%26camp%3D1789%26creative%3D9325%26tag%3Dheadfiorg-20%26location%3Dhttps%253A%252F%252Fwww.amazon.com%252Fgp%252Fproduct%252FB002Z9JWZS%252Fref%253Doh_aui_search_detailpage%253Fie%253DUTF8%2526psc%253D1]Shure HPAEC840 Replacement Ear Cushions[/url] on the ATH50x the sound is completely different sounding-all the muddy flabby bass goes to a precise sound (in fact all the ranges become more precise). As soon as I replaced thestock pads the sound was so neutral and precise. I have a Fiio E07K amp with it and only tweak up the bass and it's fantastic.

This is truly one of the most ignorant comparisons of any headphone I have ever read.  Not only did you make apples-to-oranges comparisons between price to such an extent that you were comparing the m50 with headphones that cost twice or even triple the price, you were making apples-to-oranges comparisons in the type/kind of headphone as well.  You didn't compare the m50 to a single other closed headphone.  Why are you even here? What you've written does more to confuse and deceive than it does to educate.  Honestly, what you've written is a detriment to the reader.
