INTRODUCTION

The Celest CD-20 was sent to me free of charge on a review tour. I will objectively compare this product with a dongle half the price of itself and 4 different headphones.

Iphone 12 is used as source and ddHIFI MFI06 L cable is used as OTG.

BOX OPENING, CONTENT AND MATERIAL QUALITY

The Celest CD-20 comes in a minimalist box. The box and its opening do not feel special. It is extremely simple. Ziplock bags are privileged. Box content is simple. Includes two end Type Ccables. A small and simple instruction manual is available. Does not include a protective case.

The material quality of the product is good. It gives the impression of durability. Connections are tight.

AUDIO IMPRESSIONS

First impressions of a product are very important. I am very excited about what it will add to my music that I know every detail. I am starting my trials with the same excitement in CelestCD-20.

To be objective, I tried Celest CD-20 with 4 different headphones. 3.5mm and 4.4mm inputs were used in this process.

Since there is no working light on the CD-20, we have no idea whether it works or not until the sound comes to our ears.

When the sound first comes to our ears, the difference in the trebles is felt. The trebles are slightly raised. The micro details in the treble are good and add airiness to the sound. Althoughthe treble is raised, it is controlled and not harsh. There may be some discomfort in the female vocals.

Although the trebles are high, the mids are a little in the background. Details are good in the mids, but since they are in the background, they give a feeling of emptiness at this point.

Basses sound softer and, like the trebles, are raised a notch. Its presence is not disturbing and it makes its presence felt softly where necessary. It does not leak into the middle region. It does not tend to distort. It is controlled.

The sound stage is not wide, but it does not sound cramped. Stereo separation is good.

The product starts to heat up from the first moment it starts to work. Energy consumption is above average.

Disappointing when used from the 4.4mm input. It offers a bass that tends to excessive treble and harmonic distortion. The centres disappear.

I want to try this product with 4 different headphones to give it more chance…

COMPARISONS

Dunu Titan S2

Dunu Titan S2 is a headset that I like with its box content, sound stage and sound stage far beyond its price and I share its review. (Those who are curious about the review can take a look.https://www.head-fi.org/showcase/dunu-titan-s2.27347/reviews)

Bass sounds continue to be controlled and the necessary depth is present. There is no leakage to the mids, but there is a sense of emptiness in the mids. Treble resolution is good and tendsto come to the fore. Female vocals sound uncomfortable. They're not very compatible.

Kiwi Ears Cadenza

I'm trying my luck with Cadenza, one of the price performance leaders. Kiwi Ears adds vibrancy to the problematic treble region of Cadenza and the freshness in the sound increases noticeably. It has a positive effect on the lower frequencies, which is one of the points where this headphone shows itself, and adds softness. The CD-20 Cadenza pairing is positive and the Cadenza moves up a class.

Celest Plutus Beast

I'm trying the CD-20 with a headphone of its own brand. Plutus continues to maintain its strict line. It adds no colour, there is no change except for a slight sparkle in the treble. Thereis no plus situation and there is nothing to be called a minus.

Fiio FH3

One of my favourite Fiio headphones. Due to the BA driver, the trebles sometimes tend to be harsh. Female vocals are disturbing at high volumes. The softening of the lower frequencies is feltand does not leave control. It cannot be said that the CD-20 FH3 duo is compatible.

1736797574309.jpeg

CELEST CD-20 AND MOONDROP DAWN PRO COMPARISON

As I mentioned at the beginning of my review, I'm putting up against the CD-20 a product almost half the price of the CD-20 itself, the Moondrop Dawn Pro.

I bought the Moondrop Dawn Pro at two different times. When I bought it in July 2024, there were quality problems. Heating and the internal part and the keys moving. I did not experience anyof these problems when I bought it in December 2024. The company may have fixed the problems.

The Moondrop Dawn Pro is $50 and the Celest CD-20 is $90.

The Moondrop Dawn Pro comes in a very elegant metal case.

The quality of the content is adequate. It gives information from the stream thanks to the colour of the lights on it.

The Moondrop Dawn Pro is superior with a more full-bodied sound presentation and with the treble in the background. It sounds natural and balanced. The stage is not cramped. There is no sibilance.Music sounds as it should. Bass presence is well felt. The mids are smooth. The treble lags behind in distinction. There is a lack of resolution.

There is no heating and energy consumption is low compared to the CD-20.

CONCLUSION

CD-20 could have done more, given its price of 90 USD. My expectation was higher. At least a warning light and a better box and protective case. It could offer a better sound profile by balancingthe sound in the middle. As it is, it offers little compared to its price and its competitors are many. Also, those who are not sensitive to treble should prefer. It is a bit picky about headphone preference. The price ishigh according to the sound it offers.

poor at best
Pros: small for factor
Cons: sub par sound
after hearing so much good about the Celest i purchased one for myself. i write this admitting all ears are different, and not every product meets exacting standards.

my Celests's came boxed as noted by reviewers. unfortunately thats where the similarities ended. the Celeste, does a very poor job of bringing to life the music i love. i played my usual mix of music i listen to on all my systems and have been doing so in some cases for 50 years. oldies, steely dan, cindy lauper, war, santana,. all of these i have heard 10000's of times i know each note, where and how long, important with dark side of the moon.

i listen on my K10's, and have used sony DAPS, Chord Mojo, Burson, all are different but excellent. the celeste left entire portions of the midrange out of the presentation. as i write my impressions i. realize i did not hear any real good to write about, i do remember as i listened i thought maybe using an app to tune the dongle? maybe needs burn in? i thought it need a bit more volume but as i increased volume the dongle became static, fuzzy sounding.

i use apple from my mac air now, played through VLC, the mac does sound better i must say i can not support this dongle, or promote is as an good addition to anybody's gear collection even at a mere $90 to my door

thanks for reading

i will admit that little by little my CD 10 is opening up more and more, but with my comparisons being Mojo 1, A&K es 300 on older grado IEM's, Nobel K10'S, these 2 iem's reval quite a bit and i am a fan of female vocals which do sound kind of hollowed out, parts of the presentation left out. but i will continue to listen.

Celest CD-20 Portable DAC/Amp Review
Pros: Very Neural and Colorless, Massive Power for the Price, Solid Technicalities
Cons: Lack of Accessories especially Cases (Nitpicking), Background Noise increases in High-Gain Mode
CELEST CD-20: POCKET POWERHOUSE

DISCLAIMER:
The Celest CD20 was sent to us free of charge by the Celest Audio team for review purposes. We are humbled and would like to thank the kind folks at Celest Audio for their continuous support of Aural Cafe.

Introduction: -

Today at Aural Cafe we are reviewing Celest Audio Celest CD20 portable DAC and headphone amplifier. Celest CD20 is armed with a very capable ES9039Q2M DAC and is Celest Audio's first offering in this hot and crowded product category.

Celest CD20 marks Celest Audio’s bold entry in the hot and crowded product category of portable DAC/Amps and dongles, which seems to be the flavour of the season. Celest CD20 is equipped with a very capable ESS SABRE top-of-the-line single ES9039Q2M DAC which is rare to find in portable DAC/Amp and dongles which have been launched in recent times. But before we delve more into the Celest CD20, we would like to first apprise our fellow audiophiles of the brand Celest Audio. Celest Audio is a subsidiary brand of Dongguan, China-based Yu Tai Electronic Acoustics. Yu Tai Electronic Acoustics is a Dongguan, China-based company that started its journey with the launch of the Kinera brand way back in 2011. In 2012 Yu Tai Electronic Acoustics had the honour to launch the world’s first high resistance 5mm micro dynamic speaker for military hearing aids. In 2013, Yu Tai Electronic Acoustics began mass manufacturing of quality BA drivers at competitive pricing due to which Yu Tai Electronic Acoustics became an internationally and locally renowned supplier of BA drivers. From 2014 to 2015, Yu Tai Electronic Acoustics developed several patents for various driver tech, but it was in 2016 which is a landmark in Yu Tai Electronic Acoustics history as it is in 2016 when the ‘Kinera’ brand came into existence with the launch of BD005, an entry-level hybrid driver IEM to cater the needs of the price sensitive audiophiles. In 2018, when we at Aural Cafe had just started its audiophile journey, Kinera released a series of IEMs such as SEED, IDUN and ODIN but it was after Kinera Odin 8 BA-based IEMs after which we at Aural Cafe started closely the Kinera brand. Fast forward to 2024 in six years, Kinera has become a leading premium brand and Yu Tai Electronic Acoustics ended up launching two more sub-brands Queen of Audio (QOA) and Celest Audio.

Celest Audio was established in 2021, to explore innovative ways of creating hi-fi in-ear monitors through which bands, singers, musicians and stage performers can come up with more real, authentic, and true-to-life sound performances. Celest Audio primarily aims to come up with unconventional innovative IEMs and audio accessories through independent research and development of planar magnetic, dynamic drivers, balanced armatures and other driver techs. Overall, we at Aural Cafe feel that Celest Audio is a young dynamic fluid brand that not only aims to cater for the evolving needs of mature musicians and singers but also young audiophiles who are very demanding and price-sensitive at the same time. Well, this isn’t the first pair of Celest IEMs that we have reviewed at Aural Cafe. We recently reviewed Celest IgniteX Beast (attach review link here) which was a crazy offering from Celest Audio for just 49 US$. We also reviewed the Celest Relentless (attach review link here) and Celest Wyvern Abyss (attach review link here) at Aural Cafe which was a very fun and learning experience. We are quite excited to review Celest CD20 being Celest Audio first product offering in the already crowded portable DAC/Amp and dongle product category.

Celest CD20 is armed with very capable ESS SABRE’s top-of-the-line single ES9039Q2M DAC which is rare to find in portable DAC/Amps and dongles that have been launched in recent times. ES9039Q2M is the mobile version of ESS Sabre flagship ES9039PRO dac which performs technically at par with ES9039PRO but draws very little power and thereby seems to be a smart choice for implementation in portable DAC/Amps and dongles where power is majorly drawn from the mobile source. ES9039Q2M is capable of PCM and DSD encoding vis-a-vis offering hi-fi resolution along with ultra-low distortion rate. Celest Audio team has implemented the flagship ES9039Q2M DAC with proprietary Amp architecture which is equipped with three independent power supply chips enabling Celest CD20 to achieve a class-leading dynamic range of 126 dB along with ultra-low background noise. The CD20 hardware capability supports PCM audio decoding up to 32-bit/768 kHz and Direct Stream Digital (DSD)format audio decoding up to DSD512. From the outside CD20 CNC metaled unibody design looks very minimalistic but the Celest CD20 is a pocket powerhouse in a true sense as weighing only 16.2gms Celest CD20 is capable of delivering an output power of up to 480 mW in balanced mode with high gain level on. What makes Celest CD20 not only a powerful, but a versatile compact DAC/Amp is its detachable cable design making CD20 compatible with multiple systems such as Windows, Android, and Mac OS and enabling audio decoding not only through smartphones but also through computers and tablets. The Celest Audio team has once again taken care of the needs of the gamers as Celest CD20 supports UAC 1.0 and 2.0 thereby making Celest CD20 compatible with mainstream gaming consoles such as PS5 and SWITCH allowing both audiophiles as well as gamers to enjoy hi-fi sound experience anytime, anywhere. Celest CD20 is equipped with a 3.5mm single-ended and a 4.4mm balanced jack along with three independent buttons which not only help to precisely control the sound volume but also help an audiophile to switch between high and low gain modes. The high and low gain mode goes a long way in helping an audiophile as well as a professional gamer to switch between IEMs and headphones with different sensitivity. At balanced mode with high gain On Celest CD20 is capable of delivering a crazy output of 4vrms which we at Aural Cafe believe will be sufficient enough to drive the most demanding IEMs as well as portable headphones at their optimum level. We also like to add here that the CD20 does get a bit warm but not burning hot when an IEM or headphone is driven on high gain through a balanced 4.4mm port.

The Celest CD-20 is priced at 93 US$.

Unboxing Experience, Design & Build: -

Just like our previous unboxing experience with Celest Audio products, Celest CD20 also exhibits a minimalistic unboxing experience which one can also see from our unboxing video ( ) Celest CD20 comes in a nearly square shape navy blue colour small size box with a small brand name ‘CELEST’ being printed in golden letter shining brightly right at the centre of the box. The back side of the box is dominated by the details and specifications of the CD20 portable DAC/Amp. On opening the box, we are first greeted with the customary leaflet. The leaflet becomes a bit important this time as it provides information on how to operate the CD20 in different modes. On keeping aside, the leaflet we are welcomed with the CD20 dongle DAC/Amp along with a solid 10cm long USB C to C connector.

1733849995402.png

The design language of the Celest CD20 dongle DAC/Amp is quite minimalist yet very functional, while the build quality is top-notch. The Celest CD20 CNC aluminium alloy unibody design looks very simple yet premium at the same time. There are no rough edges that we usually see in a dongle DAC/Amp, each side is beautifully smoothed as a result of which it feels very comfortable to handle and use. The Celest CD20 is just 52x23x14mm in size and 16.2gms in terms of weight which makes the Celest CD20 very portable to carry and listen to hi-fi music just anywhere anytime. The first half of the gunpowder Grey colour CD20 body has been kept plain while the other half is engraved with elegant parallel line designs which adds to the premium quotient of the CD20 design language. The top is where the USB C port is situated while the 3.5 mm single-ended and 4.4 mm balanced port is located at the bottom of the dongle. The three independent round-shaped volume buttons are positioned on the left side of the dongle. The top cherry red colour volume button adds a dash of zing to the whole minimalistic design of CD20. The three buttons not only help with volume control but also help us to swap between the different modes, the high gain and the low gain as well as the UAC1.0 and UAC 2.0 modes. We would like to write a bit about the stock USB C to C connector as well. The stock USB C to C connector is 10 cm in size and very sturdy in quality. The thick yet a bit flexible USB C to C connector is one of the best we have seen in recent times. The thickness of the USB C to C helps the CD20 dongle to stay stable while using it on the go, which would definitely help an audiophile or a gamer functionally.

Operating Celest Cd20 Portable Dac/Amp: -

The Celest Audio team has done a superb job in integrating maximum features inside a small portable DAC/Amp. The control of Celest CD20 operation lies on three round buttons positioned on the left side of the dongle. We are quite impressed by the precise 60-step volume control mechanism that the Celest Audio team has implemented in CD20. The 60-step volume control mechanism looks simple but aids a lot while swapping through the different genres of the soundtrack. The top cherry red colour button number 1 plays the major role of out of the three buttons for swapping between the different modes. The middle of button number 2 and the bottom of button number 3 help more in controlling the overall volume. The Celest CD20 Portable DAC/Amp can be operated smoothly in the following ways:

Gain - Press and hold the cherry red button to swap between low and high gain

Play/Pause - Short press the cherry red button once (Button 1).

Next Track - Short press the cherry red Button 2 times (Button 1).

Swapping Between UAC 1.0 And 2.0 Mode: By default, the CD20 dongle operates in UAC2.0 mode, which can be manually switched to UAC 1.0 mode. UAC mode cannot be switched while the CD20 is in use. To set the CD20 to operate in UAC1.0 mode one must follow the following steps with the device being powered off and disconnected:

1. Press and hold button number 2

2. Connect the CD 20 to the USB C port of the PC, Smartphone, Game Console etc.

3. The device will be then switched to UAC 1.0 mode and the gamer is ready to use CD20 with his or her gaming console.

Sound Analysis: -

We would like to state here that we have used and tested Celest CD20 with neutral IEMs and headphones such as Sora Audio Rise, NF Acous NM20, Craft Ears Six, Rhapsodio Little Eden and Aune AR5000 to share our experience with our readers and fellow audiophiles in the right way. How well the Celest CD20 can drive the power-hungry IEMs and headphones is delved into separately in the synergy and Drivability section so we would request our fellow audiophiles to go through that part.

  • Tonality: - After listening to soundtracks using Celest CD20 as a source for many hours across various genres using neutral IEMs and headphones, we can say that the sound tonality of Celest CD20 is neutral and colourless. The Celest Audio team seems to have worked very hard to keep the background noise at the lowest level resulting in top-quality clarity across the sound frequency. The dead black background helps in retrieving the micro details in an effortless manner vis-a-vis helping in achieving a solid vocal texture. The lows, mids and highs are precisely tuned without any specific part of frequency overpowering the other. The timbre of the instruments is one of the best we have heard of a DAC/Amp dongle in recent times. The true neutral sound tonality of Celest CD20 can help a lot while testing different IEMs and headphones. The tonal balance is quite accurate at the 4.4mm port on low gain mode and suggests our users use the low gain mode if it works with their IEMs and headphones. We totally got immersed in listening to ‘Comfortably Numb’ by Pink Floyd and ‘Kandisa’ by the Indian Ocean due to the raw output of CD20.

  • Lows: - The lows on Celest CD20 are very precise, immersive and clean. The mid-bass is clean and tight along with the right control and speed. We had fun listening to mid-bass punch while listening to 'Choo Lo' by Local Train. When it comes to the subbass the sub-bass on CD20 has a firm rumble. While listening to Heartless by Weekend the sub-bass had a solid rumble that decays smoothly, although the sub-bass rumble layering is average which is not a surprise as it is just a portable DAC/Amp. However, the sub-bass rumble has a better body and is a tinge more spacious on a 4.4 mm balanced port.

  • Mids: - The mids on Celest CD20 are again very neutral and clean. In terms of positioning the vocals on Celest CD20 are a tinge forward, which adds a bit of energy to the overall experience. Both the male and female vocals come out clean with beautiful and soulful emotion. The mids is like the heart of the CD20 which stays raw yet articulates the emotions of the singer beautifully and completely. The tonal balance of the vocals and the timbre of the instruments is very very accurate and may be one of the best we have heard from a portable DAC/Amp in recent times. The tonal balance remains a bit more stable on low gain in comparison to high gain. The usual dry mids which are often experienced out of ess based dongle DAC/Amp are not the case with the CD20. The Celest Audio team has implemented the ES9039Q2M DAC beautifully with the help of an independent power supply to extract the best out of the ES9039Q2M DAC and achieve clean and soulful Mids. The lower mids are surprisingly stable while the upper mids are smooth and a bit energetic on CD20 which we really enjoyed listening to Zombie by the Cranberries. We also like to add here that the instruments across the range have top-notch timbre which was an experience listening to ‘Zariya’ by AR Rahman from Coke Studio.

  • Highs: - The highs on Celest CD20 are tuned in a very organic manner without being overly bright and aggressive. The highs on Celest CD20 have a smooth extension and natural transparency which we really enjoyed while listening to ‘Lasya’ by Anoushka Shankar from her album ‘Traces of You’ on Craft Ears six. The sitar notes hit beautifully without being harsh along with lots of emotions in the soundtrack. The highs have a tinge better extension on the 4.4 mm balanced port. The transient response of musical instruments such as cymbals and drum snares is quite solid and accurate. Overall, the treble is smooth, transparent and refined which took us really high while listening to ‘Breathe’ by Pink Floyd.

  • Soundstage & Imaging: - When it comes to technical ability we have listened to a more technically solid DAC/Amp but that was quite expensive, when we consider price then Celest CD20 is a very capable DAC/Amp technically. The soundstage is wider in comparison to the overall soundstage depth. The soundstage is very spacious and wide on 4.4mm port which is also reflected by the dynamic range of the CD20. The independent power supply does its job effectively well to present you with a higher dynamic range and in turn an immersive soundstage. When it comes to separation, the separation is above average if price is taken into consideration due to dead black background although the noise does increase in high gain mode. So, we at the aural cafe would suggest using CD20 mostly in low gain mode and suggest high gain only if it is necessary to drive the IEMs or Headphones at their best. The imaging is precise and clean and no complaint there again taking price and portable DAC/Amp's usual standards into consideration. As always, our review won't be complete if we don’t listen to Hotel California, so to test this part of the review we listened to Hotel California, but this time hell freezes the version with the help of a DSD file. We are happy to communicate that Celest CD20 could easily decode the DSD file, and the experience was really amazing.

  • Synergy & Drivability: - The unique true neutral tonality would make Celest CD20 go with most of IEMs and Headphones along with various genres of soundtracks which makes Celest CD20 an excellent dongle DAC/Amp in this price range for testing IEMs and headphones. Irrespective of what you plug into CD20, CD20 will just decode it without adding any colour and present it the way the sound director intended to do. So CD20 is a solid device for understanding the true nature of your IEMs and Headphones. But yes, we at Aural Cafe feel that CD20 will match a bit better with high-quality warm and musical IEMs. When it comes to driving ability, we are happy to say that Celest CD20 is one of the most powerful dongle DAC/Amps at this price range. So, it can drive most of the IEMs there in the market. We also tried the AR5000 and HD6XX with it and we are happy to write that we haven’t lost a bit of performance. Overall, we at Aural Cafe feel that CD20 merges well with dynamic driver-based IEMs. We also like to add in this part of the review that although the output power increases quite a lot on high gain the tonal balance becomes a bit unstable, and the noise levels also increase a bit so we would suggest using high gain mode only if you are using power hungry IEMs or Headphones. When it comes to power drawing, it is just decent, and it mostly depends on whether you are driving on low gain or high gain.
1733850198366.png

1733850243346.png

Conclusion: -

Celest Audio through their maiden portable dongle DAC/Amp CD20 has set up a new benchmark in the highly competitive and crowded product category. We at Aural Cafe were quite happy to see that the Celest audio rather than focusing on the product packaging focused on the product itself. The Celest Audio team has done a wonderful job in implementing the flagship ES9039Q2M DAC along with three independent power supply chips to come up with a solid CD20 at an affordable price of just 93 US$. The CD20 is sturdy yet lightweight and can drive most IEMs out there in the market due to the hi-fi output power of 480mW @32ohms thereby making it a solid pocket powerhouse. The black background along with high quality amp circuit of CD20 is capable of giving you a true hi-fi sound experience anywhere and anytime. We loved most of the things about the CD20 but we would definitely love a more solid tonal balance at high gain and much better dynamic lows that’s just a nitpick considering the price, so if you are in the market searching for a true hi-fi portable and versatile DAC/Amp which is capable of exhibiting a high-quality sound experience then CD20 can be an excellent choice to go for.

Introduction
I want to start off this review by thanking @DestinoAzell for making this review possible. The Celest CD20 is a USB-powered dongle DAC that utilizes an ESS9039Q2M chip. It has a very high power rating for its class at 480mW@32ohm. The dongle DAC features both 3.5 and 4.4mm jack for convenience. It has 60 steps of independent volume control. It also supports UAC1 mode for using the device with a switch console.

Build
The build is of aluminium but it feels lightweight in the hand. The included OTG cable feels sturdy. The cable feels durable, the connector is tight, and will not disconnect during normal use. However, the cable is on the stiffer side and is memory-prone.

Sound Impression

Bass
Subass
Quantity(5 means neutral):
4/10
Quality: 7/10

Midbass
Quantity(5 means neutral):
5.5/10
Quality: 7.510

The Celest CD20 has more midbass presence than sub-bass presence. It has a quick and tactile bass. It feels punchy and authoritative, it is quite fun to listen to. When listening to “That band (あのバンド) - kessoku band” the fast decay characteristic of the drum can be felt. When listening to a song that has a natively boomy bass example Sailor Star Song (new version), the bass is thick, bold, and powerful enough to sound satisfying. Only if you are comparing it to a Cirus Logic based dongle for example Moondrop Moonriver 2 The rumble is ever so slightly pushed back on Celest CD20.

Mids
Lower mids
Quantity(5 means neutral):
4/10
Quality: 6.7/10

Upper mids
Quantity(5 means neutral):
6/10
Quality: 7.5/10

The Mids of Celest CD20 is better suited for female vocals. It is more exciting and the upper mids take a front seat as expected from an ESS saber dongle. I would use the word more angelic to describe the mids. Example 雪の果てに君の名を by nonoc what you can hear is more emphasis on the upper region on nonoc vocals as it is trying to highlight the upper harmonics. However, don’t get me wrong this dongle is not as shouty as some of the older ESS, for example, Hiby FC3 (old version) can have roughness in its presentation. Meanwhile, CD20 is smoother and more controlled in it’s vocals.

Normally there will be a trade-off that comes with sounding more exciting and angelic. However, I find this an ESS dongle that handles this shortcoming quite well by providing decent note weight. Compared to my Cirus logic based Moondrop moonriver 2 it still lacks note weight and some warmth. There is also a hint of dryness but there is nothing to be concerned about just nitpicking.

Treble
Lower treble
Quantity(5 means neutral):

The treble of the Celest CD20 is not what I would call bright for an ESS-based dongle. It does have a couple of peaks but I find it to be still quite tame. I find it did not exhibit strange timber as some of the ESS might. There is some obvious rounding of the treble to achieve this creating a sensation like a layer of haze in the music hindering microdetails.

Technicalities
Separation (how the vocalist and also various instrument has its own placement)
Rating:
7/10

Decent but not a standout as it tends to separate vocals decently. But I think that this is one of the areas this dongle can improve on.

Soundstage (how much width and depth is perceived by the listener)
Rating:
8/10

Yes, Celest CD20 has a great soundstage. It is on the better end even it is pitted against my Moondrop Moonriver 2. But I wish it could be a little more holographic. Considering it's price this is quite impressive.

Width: Great width with natural spacing in between.
Depth: Great depth but not as deep as my daily driver Moonriver 2.

Resolution (how much fine detail I can perceive in the music):
Rating:
7.5/10

Good quite good. There is lots of macro detail but I find micro detail still a bit rounded or softened by the treble issue I mentioned above. I am nitpicking here.

Pairing

Moondrop Kadenz

I find this to be an okay pairing but not the best. Moondrop Kadenz can benefit from punchy bass and good vocal texture. However, I would like a bit more warmth as Moondrop Kadenz is a quite flat-sounding IEM.

Moondrop Aria 2
Yes, this works well for Aria 2 since it can need more bite, and Aria 2 is an IEM that do not have enough bite. Pairing with this dongle can complement each other.

Kinera Celest Wyvern Qing
Great pairing! As this IEM benefits from this dongle extra bite and it is able to retain it’s timber very very well. Punchy, engaging, fun.

Kinera Ignitex Beast
It is an ok pairing, however, it still sounds too thin and the peaky treble that is native to this IEM is showing up. A more smooth-sounding dongle might be more desirable.

Conclusion
It is a good dongle best when paired with an already well-tuned IEM that is not dry in nature and have a warmer tilted timber. Brighter IEM with spicy treble or some natively dryer-sounding IEM might not be the best pairing for this dongle. The price also seems to be on the affordable end. Thank you Kinera for preserving the ESS sound despite all the hype for Cirus logic based dongle.

CELEST CD-20 4 ★★★★

20241107_151126.jpg

▓▒░ SOUND-SIGNATURE ░▒▓
The sound it carries is definitely neutral with a slight sub-bass boost. The mid-range has minimal coloration with an adequate treble reach, creating a well balance sound that is clean, clear and truer to the gears

▓▒░
BASS/LOW-ENDSOUND ░▒▓
The low-end has a slight bass boost without overpowering the upper-registry. The bass is more about control and tightness, rather than sheer power.

Though the sub-bass has a slight dominant, it is not the deep and rumbly type. It gives off a quick, immediate impact rather than sustaining its energy. Hence elements of throbbing, booming or vibrating is not going be the most atmospheric.

The mid-to upper bass is quite linear and well balance. It adds sufficient fullness and warmth without spilling over onto the mid-range. The attack is punchy and tight. Kick drums have a soft yet deep "thud" to the kick. Bass guitar doesn't sound bloated with a clear and well-defined tone to it. This also helps in giving electronic music a nice sense of liveliness to them.

Overall, the bass quality is no slouch. The layering and detailing is solid while providing ample of energy to keep the lows engaged.

▓▒░
MID-RANGE /VOCAL ░▒▓
The mid-range/vocals have a slight forwardness to them. Vocals and instruments are presented clearly with good level of detailing. It comes across as fairly natural and smooth, void of any harshness or muddiness. The interaction between the bass and the treble region makes the mid-range almost uncoloured.

Both male and female vocals are very well articulated. The voice doesn't sound too thin or too thick. It can pick-up subtle nuances on vocal phrasing or even audible artifacts on instrumental replay with ease. The more precise intonation to the voice allows the singer to express their emotions more accurately. Which means vocal rendition particularly sounds more immersive to listen to.

It may not be the most mid-centric tuning, but its mid-range presentation is one of its strong point. It manages to hit the right balance between euphony and clarity.

▓▒░
TREBLE/HIGHS ░▒▓
Tonally, the treble is best describe as being neutral. It is well-extended up until the mid-treble region with a gradual roll-off upon reaching the air-region. As a result, the highs have good level of presence and crisp while maintaining a smoothness that prevents it from sounding too sharp or shrill.

The slight emphasis on the low to mid treble region, gives high percussions like constant hit-hats, cymbal crashes or drum-snares a natural presence. They have a rather precise decay as they don't linger unnecessarily. Synthetic noise such as electronic zing and ringing has a more rounded edge to them. While electric guitar has just about enough bite.

The defining treble elements are laid-out with great subtleties. The treble brilliance is plentiful, but it is never intrusive. This makes it an excellent pairing for long listening sessions.

In short, the treble delivery is well-defined and refined.

════ •TECHNICAL PERFORMANCE/ASPECT• ════
The SOUND-FIELD gives off a wide, open stage that provides a good sense of space and dimension to your music. It may not offer the most expansive stage in its class but the sense of depth, width and headroom it offers is more than spacious.

The IMAGING capabilities is no slouch. The positioning of sound is accurate but not the sharpest in class. Regardless, the transition of sound between channels are kept clean, clear and smooth.

When it comes to its SEPARATION LEVEL, on top of having a good stage-dimension. The background is pitch-black. There is hardly any low noise that could taint the blackness of its background. The perks being the separated elements will have a clearer cut and spaces between them. On busier tracks, each element of sound maintained its separated borders with great consistency. The effect can be enhanced when using a well-mastered tracks.

DETAIL RETRIVAL may not be class-leading, but it is never lacking by today's standard. And more importantly, the macro & micro detail is presented without forced to ensure a natural sound reproduction.

It has a good DYNAMIC-RANGE. It can convey from soft whispers to loud, powerful crescendos rather accurately.

When it comes to TONE and TIMBRE, it has got to be one the more natural ESS SABRE DAC chip implementation in its class. This time round, Kinera/Celest managed to tune this chip ES9039Q2M to sound more analogue than digital-like which is quite the feat.

The device is WELL-BUILT. It is small, lightweight and durable for portable usage.

The DRIVING POWER is plentiful. The AMP on both SE and BAL is more than enough for most IEMs but might struggle on more demanding headphones. The power delivery is HISS-FREE with zero of CLIPPING NOISE when changing tracks.

The POWER-DRAW is quite efficient. Depending on your phone's battery capacity, It can plays your music for more than 12 hours on High-Gain.

As for HEAT-MANAGEMENT, it is average. Like most dongle, it is going to get warmish after some time. But not blazing hot.

Speaking of FEATURES, it does offer an independent volume control. The increment of volume per steps is not many but it is manageable for average IEM usage. The output has 2 mode which is low-gain and high-gain. It covers most the basic features. It is very easy to operate. I just wish it had a digital app with added filters to improve its tuning versatility. And there is no TFT or LED screen to peek on the mode or volume of you're in. At the very least it is very easy operate.

As for SYNERGY, it is safe to say that it pairs well with nearly everything on the market due to its neutral natural sound. The connected gears will sound closer to its intended tuning.

For about 93USD PRICETAG, in terms of features, it is slightly behind it competitors. But sonically, it is a solid performer.

FINAL THOUGHTS◢
Recently, Kinera/Celest has been on roll on releasing budget product. And too many it didn't miss. I am happy to say that, with the CD-20, it delivers an impressive sound quality for its price-point. I have never been a fan of an ESS DAC chips. They tend to sound more digital-like which comes at the expense of the naturalness of its timbre. And to my surprise, it not so the case with the CD-20, which makes it one of my favourite ESS SABRE DAC implementations on dongles to date. Hopefully, they can release a CS or AKM based dongle in the not-too-distant future.

Simple Design, Optimum Performance!

Celest CD20

After trying out a few dongles recently, I happened to receive a dongle from Celest. This is their latest dongle, and I have to say, it might be the most interesting one I've ever tried. Not only because of its great design and functional buttons, but the sound… wow, it’s just my style.
Here it is… the Celest CD-20.

==DISCLAIMER==

All impressions here were tested with my usual setup (list below). So if there’s a difference in sound impression, it’s likely due to subjective hearing differences, a defect in the unit, or the source used.
All my impressions and reviews are subjective and come from a place of honesty — no fluff. Agreed? Cool. Disagree? That’s fine too. I review because I want to and enjoy it, not because I have to, lol.
Important!! I’d still recommend you audition it yourself; who knows, maybe my ears need an ENT checkup, or maybe yours do (lol).

==MY DAILY DRIVER==

IEMs:
Symphonium Crimson; Unique Melody Mest mk2; 634ears Loak2 TX03; Empire Ears Legend X; Ziigaat x Jay Audio Estrella
DACs:
Fiio Q15; Chord Mojo 2; XDuoo XD05 Pro
DAPs:

Ear tips:
Eletech Baroque; Spinfit W1 Premium; Azla Sedna Crystal; Penon Liquor; JVC Spiral Dot++

==Unboxing==

For a DAC/AMP dongle in this price range, there's no point complaining about unboxing. It’s straight to the point. Contents include:
  • The DAC/AMP dongle itself
  • C to C cable
  • Manual
…and that’s it.

==Physical Appearance==

Minimalist design that I really like because it’s super simple. Glossy dark grey color with "Celest" printed on the front. The right side has three buttons: the top red button for play/pause, high gain/low gain switching, and switching between UAC 1.0 and 2.0 modes (don’t ask me what UAC is; I don’t know, lol). The two buttons below are for volume (+) and (). The bottom side has outputs for 3.5mm and 4.4mm, and the top side is for the Type C cable connection.

==Sound Impression==

Note: Tested with HibyDigital M300, Empire Ears Legend X, and Ziigaat Estrella.
When I used this dongle, I was immediately sure I’d write a lot of good things about it because I liked it so much. Let’s dive in...
  • Clear, Dark Background.
The first thing I noticed is how well this dongle provides a black background, making each sound clearer, crisper, and more focused in detail. This is the highlight for me and impacts everything else.
  • Neutral to Bright
With its excellent black background, high frequencies and microdetail presentation are clearer and easier to notice. There’s also a slight boost in the highs, making them feel more highlighted. Despite this, the mids and lows still hold adequate power. Interestingly, even with the highlighted treble, it remains controlled and doesn’t feel offensive.
  • Sweet Vocals and Great Imaging
Lastly, what I really like is the sweet vocals that sit nicely in the center, surrounded by other instruments with excellent imaging, making the sound feel more dynamic.

==Conclusion==

  • For its price, I was quite surprised by how good this dongle sounds.
  • The great black background, solid technical performance, and bright tonal leaning make it a great choice. The standard C to C cable feels just right, given the other great qualities of this device.
  • Is this dongle worth buying? For me, all the pros of this dongle meet my needs for a dongle. Highly recommended.
That’s it.
Trust your own ears.
Bye.

Kinera Celest CD-20 dongle DAC review
.
The Celest CD-20 (89.99 USD) sports the latest DAC chip, the ES9039Q2M from ESS Sabre.
.
This was sent to me by Kinera Celest for a review. Thank you, Kinera Celest, for giving me this opportunity to review your newest dongle DAC.
.
Introduction:
.
Kinera was established in 2010 and does their own research and development of high-tech electroacoustic products of various kinds, like dynamic drivers, balance armatures, planars, electostatics, and bone conduction. All of these were used in their products, and some of them were developed by them.
.
Celest is a subbrand of Kinera, in which the products in this brand are based on excellent low frequency and high resolution as the main tuning concept, with a good aesthetic integrated into the design.
.
Unboxing:
.
The unboxing experience was very pleasant. The box is simple, elegant, and easy to open, which contains a manual, a 10 cm USB C connector, and the CD-20 dongle DAC.
.
Build quality and finish:
.
From the looks of it, it seems like it was machined out of a solid piece of aluminum alloy, where I can see only one opening for the internals to come in. It feels small and solid in the hands, and the slightly chamfered edges really contribute to its elegant feel. The finish seems to be anodization process, which has a high hardness and is very durable. The color looks like greenish-dark gray.
.
Power output:
.
Thanks to its well-engineered, three-independent power supply inside the unit, the power output, at 480 milliwatts, is much higher than the typical dongle DACs' at around 250 milliwatts. The sound is very dynamic and energetic, seems to have a bigger presentation, and can go much louder compared to typical dongle DACs as of this writing.
.
Heat and power consumption:
.
I feel no difference from any other dongle DACs I've tried; it runs slightly warm just like any other dongle DACs.
4MC_R7037.jpg
3MC_R7042.jpg
.

Sound:
.
Tonality:
.
The perceived frequency response is perfectly flat; I hear no emphasis in any frequencies and no rolloff in the treble or bass. It sounds neutral and matches well with any IEMS or headphones I used.
.
Soundstage:
.
It has a good size; it is wider than it is deep when I tested it with several IEMs and headphones; it's not the deepest I've heard; and the height is good.
.
Imaging:
.
As to be expected from a good dongle DAC, the imaging is good.
.
Details and separation:
.
It has very good details and instrument separation, certainly above average.
.
Bass:
.
The bass is neutral and flat; I hear it not boosting or bloating; it is fast and tight with very good control; and it doesn't seem to falter at high volume levels.
.
Midrange:
.
The midrange is very neutral and coloration-free. The voices are rendered very nicely.
.
Treble:
.
The treble is very extended yet smooth sounding; the extension seems to be unlimited; I hear no rolloff. The sound is very transparent, airy, and analytical.
.
Pros:
.
Excellent build and finish
Excellent-feeling control buttons
Independent volume control
Small size
Very good sound
High power output
.
Cons:
.
I cannot think of any cons at the price; I have nothing to complain about.

.
Conclusion:
.
The Kinera Celest CD-20 is a small but powerful and clean-sounding dongle DAC, and with its good sound, good controls, and trouble-free operation, it easily earns its recommendation.
.
Happy listening! Cheers!
