Review Of IKKO ITX01

b.jpg

Introduction

The IKKO Company is a well establish Chinese company known for its infamous IEMs like IKKO OH10, OH7,etc. The company have also released more IEMs like OH1, OH1s, OH2 and the above two mentioned. But other than these IEMs, The company has also indulged itself more into other distinctive areas and produced a DAC/AMP lineup under which a USB hub cum DAC/AMP named ITX01, ITM01 and ITM05 which is a portable DAC/AMP comes under, Bluetooth Wireless set like IKKO IT01 'Breezy' and recently launched speakers. But in this review, I will be talking about their USB hub cum DAC/AMP ‘ITX01’. This is a very unique unit as IKKO is the first company to provide a Hi-Res DAC inbuilt into a USB hub with features that are impressive.

* Thanks to HiFiGo team as this unit tour has been arranged by HiFiGo, lovely people. And as mentioned in all of my reviews, same goes with this one too and that is, each and every thoughts below mentioned are my personal own thoughts and they are not fiddled with any outside influences. The following link is where you can go and own one for yourself :-

*I will be referring these to as 'ITX01' for the rest of the review.
*I will be comparing these with my own personal units .
*And at last I will only be reviewing the ITX01 on the basis of their performance, I do not care what these are made of or packaged with when newly purchased unless it affects the sound in any sense what so ever.

Specification

The ITX01 has an in house made DAC SNC 8600 which can decode PCM up to 32-bit/192khz. This USB Hub provides two outputs, one is a single ended 3.5mm and the other is 4.4 balanced. Although these have a suitable headphones impedance of 16 to 600 ohms still the maximum output power is 64mW at 32 ohms. Though the frequency response is from 10Hz - 40kHz. The THD+N at 1kHz is 0.01% and SNR is >100. Other than the audio grade features, this has one TF card reader, One SD card reader, one HDMI Port that supports 4k resolution output at 60Hz, three USB-A 3.2 ports, 1 USB-C port for data and 1 USB-C type charging port which power delivery up to 100W. This also have a small touch screen to change audio presets which are Movie, Gaming and Hi-Fi. These are compatible with operating system like android, iOS, iPadOS, MacOS, LINUX and Windows. Though this review is more audio related than on technical side.

Sound & Technical Performance

Okay so the sound is differentiated over three types of presets which are :-
1. Movie
2. Gaming
3. Hi-Fi
Hence I will be sub categorizing this part of my review into these three presets.

a.jpg

Movie

The ‘Movie’ preset has V-shape sounding profile as the bass and treble elevates while the mid range doesn’t sub dues which causes the mods to sound bloated and the bass a bit distorted and noisy. The treble sounds a little dark on this preset. The technical presentation is not good as the stage sounds intimate and clustered up the imaging and separation is blunt and congested. The resolution becomes poor and speed becomes loose and wet.

Gaming

While on 'Gaming' preset, the bass becomes thin and very detailed although the treble sounds a bit peaky for my taste but the mid range is have no issues and sound normal. The bass sounds lean and light, the note weight and density is lost. On the technical side of this preset, the stage becomes wider and image becomes clearer as well as separation becomes much better than the movie preset. The resolution becomes overly clear and the speed is still lacking.

Hi-Fi

Coming to the 'Hi-Fi', yes the Hi-Fi sounds the best of all. This preset provides a good balance presentation of sound. The treble is upfront and bright yet smooth and clean. The mid range is placed very well and sounds clean but a bit shouty. The bass is controlled and have a good weight and density to it which simultaneously helps vocals become more warmer. Same goes for the technical performance, The sage is well set and wide enough, the image and layering is nicer if compared to Gaming preset and the separation is okay. While the resolution is great and speed still lacks but best in all three.

Conclusion

To conclude this review, mostly audiophiles who uses USB hub will definitely dive in for this as this s a perfect innovation for them but those who are looking for DAC/AMP and believes that the USB hub will come in handy as well should not buy this rather go for IKKO’s other offerings like ITM01 and ITM05. So yeah I would recommend these to those audiophiles who wants to have a proper functioning USB hub with a Hi Res DAC/AMP with a balanced output as well. Totally worth it for the price.

1000+ Head-Fier
IKKO ITX01: A Multi-Purpose USB Hub With In-Built Hi-Res DAC
Pros: Fast USB ports
Decent sound quality
Bal 4.4mm connection support
build quality is very good
Three working modes
Doesn't get hot while using PD charging
Battery Drain isn't much
Cons: no MQA support
Noticeable noise in the background when using sensitive IEMs
Today, IKKO Audio is a reputed name in the industry. They don’t need any deep introduction as they have made a good name with their quality IEMs namely the OH10, OH1, OH7, OH2, and more. Quite recently, IKKO entered into the world of USB DAC/AMPs releasing a few well-built and decently sounding Portable USB DAC/AMPs. Today, I am going to share my impressions of one of their latest device, the IKKO ITX01. ITX01 for all those who don’t know is a multiple port USB docking station designed with a standard USB Type-C connection. It actually has 10 ports consisting of USB 3.2 ports, USB Type-C ports, and 4.4mm Bal/3.5mm headphone ports. ITX01 is priced at 99$, so let’s check it out.
1.jpg

Disclaimer:-

IKKO ITX01 here is provided to me by HiFiGo as a part of a review tour organized by HiFiGo in my country. Rest assured, all the thoughts and impressions made in this review blog are completely my own. If interested you can buy the ITX01 from their website from the link below:-

https://hifigo.com/products/ikko-itx01-usb-hub

Design & Build Quality:-

ITX01 has a solid metallic build in a semi triangular shape. All the ports here are made available at the sides. At the top and back, we have an image of the IKKO logo printed on the chassis of the ITX01. On the right, we have two USB 3.2 ports, a USB Type-C port, and two memory card slots(one microSD and one SD). Left side houses a USB 3.2 port along with a 4K 60Hz HDMI output, and a USB Type-C PD charging port. There is a small LED right next to the PD charging port, it glows white when we connect the charging cable here. There’s also a touch-sensitive key on the left side that helps us change the output mode cycling between HiFi music mode, Gaming mode, and Movie mode. The ITX01 has two headphone output ports located on the front side. One is a 4.4mm balanced connection port, and the other is a 3.5mm single-ended connection port. On the backside, we have a non-detachable straight USB Type-C connector cable. There are no physical buttons just one touch-sensitive mode-changing switch at the left side. I would have appreciated physical volume keys on the ITX01.
2.jpg

The ITX01 is a very well-built product. Of course, I expected the same from IKKO as their IEMs and other USB DAC/AMPs have shown pretty solid build quality.

Features & Usability:-

IKKO ITX01 is said to be the world’s first USB Dock to feature an in-built hi-res DAC chipset. It can be used with a variety of devices including smartphones and laptops. For my usage, I have tested the ITX01 using my MacBook Pro(M1 Chipset) and my smartphone Redmi Note 10 Pro. I also have another USB Hub for my MacBook but it doesn’t have any Audio output or DAC featured in it. I find the ITX01 to have a faster USB connection. Any USB drive I connect to it the transfer speed is faster than my previous hub. Guessing this is due to the fact that it houses new USB 3.2 ports.
7.jpg

Another thing I noticed good here with the ITX01 is that while charging my MacBook connected with its 100W PD charging slot, the ITX01 doesn’t get hot. I mean it gets slightly warm after a few hours but never gets too hot. My previous hub never allowed me to charge the MacBook properly. Also while using the Hub for charging and output at the same time, there is no noticeable noise introduced in the output.
4.jpg

I appreciate the inclusion of a 4.4mm Bal port on the ITX01. It allowed me to connect my UM Mext with the ITX01 without any connectors(I have a 4.4mm termination). One thing I must add here, the touch-sensitive button isn’t that sensitive after all. It takes a strong touch to actually register a keypress. Also, there’s no MQA decoding support on the ITX01.

Battery Drain:-

ITX01 runs off the connected source device. When using it just for music the battery drain isn’t much. I notice about 4-5% extra battery going off my smartphone when using it with 4.4mm headphone output(In an Hour). Although I have not used the 4K 60Hz HDMI Out much I am guessing when using such heavy functions, the battery drain might be a little bit higher.

Sound Performance:-

ITX01 has three modes of sound output, White, Blue, and Yellow. These can be switched by pressing the touch-sensitive button on the left side. I find the White to have a smooth, detailed sound with a wider stage presentation. The Blue mode gets a boost in the lower end with powerful bass drops, and the Yellow mode has a boosted lower end and slightly forward presentation for midrange. I have used multiple gears with the ITX01 including Tanchjim Tanya, IKKO OH2, UM MEXT IEMs, and HiFiman Ananda headphones. I also tested the CA Ara IEMs for a short while.
3.jpg

About the sound presentation, the ITX01 has a smooth and mostly neutral sound presentation. I don’t find the ITX01 to add any warmth or color to the output. Although it enhances the treble frequencies a bit nicer than the others. Lower end is tight and punchy, Midrange and vocals have a smooth and textured presentation, while treble has a clean and detailed approach with my tested IEMs. Soundstage presentation is a bit average in terms of width. Although the presentation has good air on the stage, instruments can be heard very well separated and detailed.

ITX01 has a fairly decent sound presentation, no coloring, and smooth, detailed output, although the pairing with sensitive IEMs is not that great. I noticed CA Ara showed a bit of noise in the background. Although I admit Ara is a quite sensitive set and needs IEMatch with most sources. The background noise is not noticeable on other IEMs and Has that I tested. ITX01 was also able to power the Senheisser HD650(although at around 75% volume on the connected source.
5.jpg

Final Words:-

ITX01 is a very useful device. At least for my use case. I use it on a daily basis with my MacBook, connecting my microphone, and USB drives, and at the same time using a 4.4mm bal connection with my laptop. The hub has faster USB 3.2 connections which are highly useful when you are exchanging data all the time from one device to the other. Also, both the Memory Card slots work at the same time. Surely, the ITX01 has a few flaws of its own like no MQA support, a noticeable noise floor with sensitive IEMs, but its usability and attractive price point make up for both of these minor flaws. I hope you guys liked my writeup, please leave me a like below if you like it, for any questions related to the IKKO ITX01, feel free to ask me in the comments section below.

New Head-Fier
Pros: Feature rich, probably last word when it comes to utility.
Cons: Falls short of dedicated dongle DACs when it comes to sound quality.
Disclaimer : The unit was sent by Hifigo as a part of a review tour but all thoughts and opinions are my own. You can purchase it here.

Build Quality
ITX01 being a "10 in 1 docking station" there isn't much expectation from it when it comes to build as usually these are made out of plastic save for the expensive ones. As far as prices go for a feature rich docking station, $99 is competitive and so is the build quality. Unit feels solid to hold but it is (as expected) considerably bulky. It is expected because of the controllers, hub pcbs and the dac section inside. You can only cram so much in a limited space, so it is better to expand real estate lest there are performance compromises or bottlenecks.

Features & Utility
The 10 in 1 docking station packs the following : 100W PD via type C, USB 3.2 via type C, 3x USB 3.2 via USB A, HDMI 2.0, micro SD slot, full sized SD slot and more importantly for us, 3.5mm single ended & 4.4mm balanced outputs. It is compatible with Android, IOS, Mac OS, Win10, PS5, Switch. I used it with Android, iOS, Windows 10 and PS5 without any issue. During testing with multiple (but not all) interfaces, I was surprised to see that it didn't heat up as much as I was expecting it to. Neither did I face any glitches or disconnections during my testing. For the rest of the review I will be focusing on the sound performance of the ITX01.

WhatsApp Image 2022-04-29 at 10.57.11 PM (1).jpeg

Sound Quality
ITX01 comes with 3 sound presets : hifi, movie and gaming. Right out of the box I was preferring the Hifi output over the other two. Reason being that the sound quality was simply thinner and simply not up to the mark, with weird tonality. This is expected as it is simply just using DSP to alter the tone. I would recommend using Hifi mode all the time. Obviously if you want really good sound performance you will choose a dedicated dongle dac from the plethora of options available today, but the ITX01 performs reasonably well when it came to sound quality, it is for someone who likes to have one device for multiple use cases. The performance out of the balanced port was notably better and smoother than the single ended port, which indicates that the single ended implementation was more of an after-thought for convenience. Coming to the sound, it is reasonably good overall however there was a bit of veil in the treble accompanied by what could be none other than background noise (not noise floor), it does not have what the typical audiophile would call "a black background", which prevents little details from blossoming in. It came off as a bit muted. But you can only expect so much from an all in one device and all things considered, it is reasonably good. One more thing, do not expect too much driving capability from a docking station as really good driving capability requires quality power supply and other components, for which there isn't much space here. I would recommend sticking to regular earphones that aren't absurdly hard to drive.

WhatsApp Image 2022-04-29 at 10.57.11 PM (2).jpeg

Conclusion
If you are after quality sound and quality sound only, there are other dedicated dongle dacs out there that perform better than ITX01 (by Ikko themselves). But if you want a device that really packs all the guns in one jacket, it is quite a unique product that performs decently when it comes to sound.

Intro
Ikko is a company which needs no introduction among the audiophile community. They have released many well known IEM such as OH10, and the recent models like OH2, and OH1s which i also reviewed and like both of them.

For an audio company to release a docking station, many must be wondering, is this targeted at audiophiles? Or rather the general consumer who is looking to step up from their laptop’s internal soundcard? My opinion is the latter one, why? Let’s find out below.

Sound (HiFI Mode)
I have been using the unit extensively and on a day to day basis prior to writing this review, hence it took me a while to complete this review.
Let me be clear about one thing before I begin evaluating the sound. ITX01 is not marketed as an audiophile device to begin with, it is marketed as a docking station with a custom DAC built within the docking station to provide a better sound from your laptop.
I tried to search around the web regarding the DAC chip but couldn't really find any information about it. Perhaps it's a custom by Ikko.

ITX01 offers three types of sound mode that you can change on the fly by holding on the touch panel for 1.5 seconds. From HiFI, to movies to gaming mode.

HiFI as the name suggests is for music listening and it does offer a better sound quality compared to if i directly plug my earphone into the laptop 3.5mm jack. The difference is not day and night, but it is definitely audible. ITX01 does offer a 4.4mm jack as well.

The sound from ITX01 is slightly warm to my ears, I do find that the bass is slightly boosted, because playing the same track via the same IEM and different dac, the bass presentation is different, hence i said the bass is slightly boosted.

The note weight on ITX01 is fairly good due to it being slightly warm. Good texture and sounds musical to my ears.

Soundstage and Imaging is fairly average. The soundstage is not too wide nor does it feel very in your head. Imaging is average but when it’s on gaming mode, it is slightly better as it will help with positional audio.

Test Tracks
  • Metallica - Master of Puppets
  • The Weeknd - Gasoline
  • Rage Against the Machine - Killing in The Name
  • Simon and Garfunkel - Sound of Silence

  • Toto - Africa(Live)
  • Red Hot Chilli Peppers - Black Summer
  • Foo Fighters - Everlong
  • Roxette - The Look
  • Zhao Peng - The Moon Represents My Heart

Additional Functionality
In addition to offering a balanced out port, ITX-01 itself is also a docking station. It supports Type C charge through, which allows you to connect your Type C connect into the ITX01 and charge your device that’s connected to it, such as iPad, Macbook or Windows laptop that supports Type C Charging. I have tested it with my iPad Air and the pass-through charging is very useful because the dock itself allows me to connect the iPad Air to external display, also to utilise the 4.4 port for audio and also various USB ports to connect my input peripherals.

FInal Thoughts
Will I recommend this gadget to anyone? Yes, a very easy recommendation in fact. Many of us are currently working from home at the moment, the addition of a docking station at such a price point, not to mention with the inclusion of a custom Dac chip and a 4.4 audio out port, this is definitely a steal and very easy to recommend.

The only gripe that I have with this docking station is that the cable is a flat cable, it is not as flexible as it seems in terms of placement of the ITX-01, but that’s personal preference, not a deal breaker for sure. Even Though it came with a custom dac, the dac is definitely a step up from the internal sound card. If you are looking for a high performance dac/amp for critical listening, this is not the one that you should be looking for.

Game and Movie mode does what it does, nothing spectacular, boosting the soundstage for gaming mode and mids for the vocals in movie mode. These two modes are not meant for music.

In fact, the ITX01 is used more by media workers who need better sound quality, but don't have as much budget for a docking station.

Yeap, fully agree. A normal Dell's Docking station cost 2-3x the price of ITX01. This is a very good alternative at attractive price point

If you are interested in purchasing this unit please go ahead with this unaffiliated purchase link: Click Here

DESIGN:
The design is just stellar! The ikko is known for their really good design thinking and they have shown this product. Their IEM’s have a unique striking design and the ITX01 continues to show their capability of design thinking.

The whole product is made out of aluminium and the whole product looks sleek and simple. All the ports are aligned on the side of the product and the device has a single ended termination of type C.

The device does not heat up a lot even after the extended period of usage which is a pretty good thing to observe. Overall the design is pretty great and a well rounded design.

SOUND:
The sound signature out of the ITX01 is pretty neutral with no additional bass boost or the treble boost option available in the hardware or the software level. The neutral signature is a boon for this multipurpose dac where it makes the device much versatile thus all sorts of the In Ear Monitors can be used with this.

The DAC present in the ITX01 is a SNC 8600 which decodes at a rate of PCM 192KHz and they are average at best in terms of sound output. They don’t match up the competitors standalone DAC ability but since this has other added advantages like the USB hubs the sound output via this is not that complain bible. However the power output via this device is pretty low where 64mW is the max one can go.
All the observations made with the HiFi audio setting while the other two modes really disappoint for listening to music.

IMG_20220403_220136.jpg

The low end via the ITX01 is pretty good in terms of control and cleanliness. The bloated bass cant be experienced here since this DAC represents the low end very clean. The bass has excellent separation overall with nice control. The decay is pretty fast with less attack. Due to this lighter taste in the bass the tonal weight feels slightly on the thinner side. The bass technically looks pretty good but needs some improvement in the quantity side. The punch and the weight is slightly lacking in the ITX01 thus the overall bass sounds leaner but definitely much cleaner, faster and well separated. So overall a technical low end is being delivered but needs some enhancements in the fun and quantity side.

The mid range delivered by the ITX01 is pretty good too with some natural tonality and the timbre of the instruments. The staging is as usual and does not compress or make the stage wider in any sense. The separation felt slightly clearer since the mid bass presence has been slightly tamed out. The layering effect remains the same without any issues. The vocal presentation and the instrument placement everything seem to be as usual and nothing has been altered by the ITX01.

The treble has been tamed out slightly making the V shaped IEM’s sounds slightly less sharp and sibilant but at the same time the lesser treble presence also made it more smoother and lead to the lesser retrieval of the details out of the track. The tone and the instrument placement felt as per the IEM’s standard and has no issues with it. The cymbal crashes and the electric guitar strings don’t have that sparkle in the top end due to that smoother treble section. The brilliance and the shimmer in the top end is slightly lacking in my testing. Overall the treble delivered out of the ITX01 is smoother, non sibilant but lacks the energy, sparkle and detail retrieval in the top end nevertheless they deliver a pretty much clearer treble section without any sort of congestion.

ADDED FUNCTIONALITIES:
The best part of the ITX01 is that apart from the DAC function the added functionality. A portable USB hub has been provided with some technologically advanced upgrades like the USB 3.2 ports, TF port and a SD card port.

IMG_20220403_220650_Bokeh.jpg
Even in the audio section they have included both the balanced and the unbalanced(4.4) ports. There is also a type C port for charging and a PD 1000W port through which you can charge your Mac without any issues. A HDMI slot has also been provided which can run at 4k 60Hz hence the gamers who are involved in streaming their gameplay benefit from this.
There is a touch panel in the device where you can configure the sound modes. The modes are as follows: Games, Movies and Music.

VERDICT:
ITX01, the latest offering from the Ikko Audio is a well rounded package with some excellent added functionalities. Rather than just focussing on the audio section they have provided some really needed extra ports which are very useful in day to day life.
The device has the balanced and unbalanced ports, 3 usb3.1 ports, two type c ports where the one is PD supported and the other is the normal one. It also has the TF and SD card reader with a touch panel to configure the sound modes of the device.
Coming to the audio part since most of the consumers of this device are Audiophiles, it's slightly disappointing in that aspect where it's definitely not bad but it could have been better. The dac that they have used is not that high end but still delivers some clean and neutral sound profile. The amp section is pretty weak too where the max output is 64mW from both the balanced and the unbalanced port.
Overall the device is a pure INNOVATION REDESIGNED product to satisfy most of one’s technical needs from just a single product. The Ikko has done a really great job with excellent practicality. In the times where the brands are removing the ports from their electronic gadgets the IKKO IRX01 is a great boon for the customers out there!

It’s a shame that ikko doesnt get much attention in the dac implementation department, the itm05 its the best implemented dac ive tested while using iOS, out of em all was the one that actually adapted its power current for the already problematic lightning power output. Good for em for trying something different
