My Denon AH-D7200 review.

Hi audiophiles.

My AH-D7200 were burned in for at least 200 hours and were used balanced via 4 pin XLR.

My audio connective trail and set-up:

16 and 24 bit WAV uncompressed and lossless files,

optical TosLink cable,

Teac UD-503,

Nordost Brahma power cable,

Nordost Tyr XLR cables,

Violectric HPA V181 headphone amplifier,

Nordost Brahma power cable.

So I’ve not really had many Denon cans, I’ve had more Fostex cans. Just didn’t happen but I’m so glad and pleased I got these beauties.

I have to say I really like the look of these cans, they look luxurious and premium.

The build quality is excellent, in every area.

I like the stitched sheepskin leather headband, I like the satisfying clicks when adjusting the ear cups down from the headband.

I like the markings on the inside of the headband, I really like the walnut wood ear cups.

I find them to be of a perfect weight and that is distributed effectively.

I don’t find them clamping nor do they apply too much pressure on my jaws (though my partner found them a little clamping, she has a smaller head than me). Long term sessions are no issue for me.

I think the yokes connected to the headband are a big improvement compared to the previous Denon cans, no more hinge screw issues.

The ear pads are a little firm but I find them very comfortable, they are also of high quality too.

The construction seems to be all metal, wood and leather. I cannot see or feel plastic anywhere, I could be wrong though.

Finally I will say, I really like the fact that this can adopts 2x female 3.5mm ports for the cable. A superb choice, cable rolling is great and easy. Yay!

So I find it’s design, build quality, looks, construction and comfort to be of very high quality. Reference level, I love it. So much attention to detail, superb work by Denon.

Sound.

These cans sound stunning, utterly stunning.

I think they are world class closed back cans and are probably my favourite of all closed back cans I’ve heard so far (even more so than the brilliant DT 250 by Beyerdynamic).

I believe they are a little V shaped in signature, a little.

The highs are fantastic, I don’t find them too harsh or too bright. The level of clarity and detail offered by these cans are very high. They are very resolving with superb definition, very insightful. They are definitely not veiled or muddy sounding. I don’t find them fatiguing either.

I find them to have a big sound stage and they sound airy. Imaging is great and so is separation.

Mids and vocals are also very good but I would personally like a little more meat to the mids and a little more body to voices.

The lows on the AH-D7200 are exceptional. It has rumble, sub bass and superb depth and extension. The impact and slam of the bass is excellent, I don’t find it overpowering the other frequencies. Full sounding with great speed too, that is hard to find.

I feel there is such a nice balance to the sound, it’s coherent and very enjoyable.

They are lively sounding and quite punchy, with great dynamics. Definitely not laid back or relaxed in signature.

This can leaks some sound but it offers great passive isolation, shutting out quite a bit of external noise.

These cans are incredible for movies too.

Comparing them (admittedly unfairly, the Clear costing more than double and it's an open back can) to a balanced Focal Clear, the Clear is a bit brighter but even more defined and detailed. The Clear is obviously more open sounding and spacious but the AH-D7200 has superior lows, it has better texture and more power.

So to sum up, these are outstanding closed back headphones that are amazing in the following areas:

design,

lows,

build quality,

highs,

comfort,

sound stage,

looks,

imaging.

I could go on, audition them if you get a chance. They are actually very difficult to fault anywhere to be honest.

They’re not too expensive also, I hope you like them as much as me.

Very highly recommended from me, happy listening all : )

Update 1.

I have to deduct half a star sadly as my friends and family noticed the headband applies some pressure at the top of their head. I did not notice this initially as it was my only headphone at the time but when comparing with the Fostex TH610, I do notice it but not as much as others. Something to bear in mind.

I agree with you about the mids, but it's so confortable and the headstage so good that it's not a problem. 4 and half stars for me too. PS my wife likes the closed design because she doesn't hear my music in the bedroom.
