Official/ New York Spring Meet Sat April 5 2014 - Impressions Thread

That would be me. A big shout out of thanks for those who stopped by to check out my home system, which concludes with an RSA Raptor feeding Sony R10's. There were some youngsters who had never heard of the R10's, and some more seasoned head-fiers who knew of them but had never heard them. It...

Best sound quality for under 500$

Quote: The above is correct except for one flaw: What signal is the quality amp amplifying? If the source unit has a LINE OUT, then the outboard amp can amplify a clean signal produced by the source. But if there is no LINE OUT jack, and the outboard amp is connecting via the headphone...

Roger Waters takes "The Wall" back on the road.

I'll pass this time. Saw 'The Wall' at Nassau Coliseum in February 1980. Ticket was $15 (which was the highest concert ticket price I had ever paid). Pretty good show from what I remember....

Drinking songs - list your drunkest!

Root Boy Slim & the Sex Change Band - "Boogie 'Til You Puke" I'm surprised to see a bunch of Root's stuff in the iTunes store... but not this classic from the self-titled debut album on Warner Brothers, circa 1978. Worth finding on used vinyl. Oops— looks like I spoke too soon (ignore the...

Live Shows, how good are they?

FWIW, I've seen Deep Purple 3 times— 1974, around 2001 (after Ted Nugent and before Lynyrd Skynyrd, aka "the filling in a white trash sandwich"), and last summer. The current state of the band— no Ritchie Blackmore (guitar), no Jon Lord (keyboards), and perhaps not much voice left on Ian...

Let's talk about forgotten and underrated albums.

Blue Oyster Cult - 'Secret Treaties' As is often the case, the album just before the big commercial breakout ("Don't Fear the Reaper") is the real treasure because... it's less commercial. Eight great songs, one twisted viewpoint and extraordinary, lyrical guitarissimo by Buck Dharma. Ignore...

Specific moments in music that send chills down your spine

    • Rick Wakeman's keyboard solo in the middle of the live "Close to the Edge" from 'Yessongs.' • The mixing of the wind chimes with the electric guitar growing in volume and then reaching its crescendo at the very start of Robin Trower's "Bridge of Sighs" (song). • Jon Anderson singing...
