You got that right, and the stock cables also offer the poorest SQ. I'm not sure what your expectations are, but cable upgrades for this IEM are offered in every price range, from $15 to a fortune. I'm on my third cable, this last one it seems sealed the deal for good, and it is affordable...

Thanks, it worked this time, but the experience was frustrating enough to hunt down a DP-X1A. What a beast! That monster is an Abrams A1M1 compared to the Rubato, but the later still remains my portable solution, while the DP-X1A produces the best sound I ever heard!

It would be hard to say for certain. Mine are also made in China, and I got them cheap from Amazon. They are authentic, and sound great! After a balanced cable upgrade, they became my most favorite pair of IEM.
