Tube seminar in Silverdale, Washington Oct 3-5
Hi picklgreen, If you are going back tomorrow, my Espressivo headphone amp is now in the Electron Luv room on the third floor. Josh is using it as a line stage, but if you track me down I'll set it up for headphone listening. My W1000's are in his room too. Gary Dahl- gdahl

Seattle Meet ... Thanks!
Quote: Originally posted by vwap Hey Gary, THanks for bringing your amp. It was great to see the thing in action. My pleasure! I enjoyed the chance to have more people take a listen. Only a few people had heard it prior to this meet. I also enjoyed meeting head-fi'er's in...- gdahl

Phono Stage needed
One thing to consider-- In most cases, a phono stage will not drive a power amp suitably by itself through a passive preamp. You might look for a preamp that has a built-in line stage. The other option would be using a power amp that has a volume control at its inputs. If you try to run a...- gdahl

Seattle meet times
Good news, Lynn Olson also plans to attend. Lynn has written for Positive Feedbackand Voice Coil, and currently is technical editor for Vacuum Tube Valley. He designed for Audionics in the early days, but in recent years has created public-domain designs such as the Ariel loudspeaker, Amity and...- gdahl

Question to ATH W1000 owners
You will need an adapter. The 1/4" plug is there to stay. I don't have a particular adapter to suggest, however.- gdahl

What ever happened to the ATH-A1000 & W1000???
Hi radrd, Yesterday afternoon I called the USPS automated claim-status line to check on things. The recorded voice said that you and I had both been sent a letter asking for further information, but I haven't received such a letter as of yet. The voice went on to say that processing of my...- gdahl

What ever happened to the ATH-A1000 & W1000???
radrd, Yes, I meant the W1000 had the best performance at the frequency extremes. To my ears, the HD600 was a bit indistinct at the bottom and sort of "electronic"-sounding at the top. This was a problem with orchestral music. The bottom-end problem causes a loss of detail in the...- gdahl

What ever happened to the ATH-A1000 & W1000???
Interesting conversation here. I'm one of the folks who got all excited about the W1000 after buying them. After jumping up and down about them several times in print, I guess I took a break from Head-Fi because I was busy enjoying the music. I had an interesting session last weekend, where I...- gdahl

passive preamps
If the other elements in the system provide a suitable environment (impedance relationships and gain structure), a transformer-based passive attenuator (using, for example, the Stevens & Billington TX-102) can provide fabulous results. I would go so far as to say it is the ultimate, in my...- gdahl

Any interest in a Seattle meet?
Hi guys, I'd be very interested in a Seattle meet, but my conducting schedule is really thick right now so it will be lucky for me if the chosen date/time is actually open. I would be happy to see that my Espressivo amp and W1000 headphones are available for people to listen to, even if I...- gdahl

Tube amps better after all?
Thanks, Tone! Don't hold your breath for a kit, though I might offer built units sometime in the future. And according to what I have heard from Doc Bottlehead, he will only offer completed units instead of kits. The parts cost for my unit was about $1400, so it wouldn't exactly be a cheap...- gdahl

If HD-600's are no longer the king, who is the new ruler?
Recently I had the W-100, HD600 and W-1000 available all at once for extended listening and comparison. I enjoyed them all. Eventually, the HD600 was returned to its owner. I sold the W-100 and kept the W-1000. There is no question in my mind that the W1000 is an improvement over the W100...- gdahl

Tube amps better after all?
As with solid-state, not all tube amps have the same performance. To further complicate the issue, some tube circuits that seem to measure well don't sound as good in real-world use as one might hope. If the goal is a "tubey" sound, bloated and rolled-off, that is easy to accomplish with...- gdahl

Headphones for classical music
I'd love to hear the AKG K1000, but I have never had the chance. I don't think they would be practical for me to own, though, because I really need some amount of isolation. I started with open-air Beyers, but the residual noise irritated my wife sometimes. Next I tried Etys, which bothered her...- gdahl

Headphones for classical music
wallijon, I've been in halls like that, with many hot and dead spots. Yuk! Last season, our seats in Benaroya Hall were in row J, which is actually only about the fifth or sixth row. This year we're in row X. It sounds great, but I'd rather sit in the 6-10 range. But really, the sound...- gdahl

W1000 pics and a few (fresh) impressions
I agree with LTUCCI1924. The W1000 needs about 20 hours of break-in, then sounds great. I do think the improvement continues for awhile beyond that time. They were quite nice right out of the box. But they definitely sounded better after running in for a couple of days.- gdahl

Headphones for classical music
wallijonn, You have asked some very interesting questions. When I attend an orchestra concert as an audience member, I like to sit fairly close, but not all the way up front. When you get really close, the ratio between the instruments nearest and most distant is rather large. The inverse...- gdahl

Headphones for classical music
I know it wasn't on the list, but I prefer the ATH-W1000 over the HD600 for classical music. When I compared them in my system, the resolution and naturalness in the bass and treble were better with the W1000. The HD600 didn't have an upgraded cable, though, which would certainly change the...- gdahl

Tube gurus, please help...
The 12AE6 is a pretty interesting tube. Most of the popular 9-pin tubes are dual triodes, but the 12AE6 (7-pin) has one triode and two diodes, which would normally be used in a radio's detector circuit. As mentioned before, it is designed to work at very low voltage, using a battery supply...- gdahl

I blew up a transformer!!!
Hi Orpheus, No, your MG Head is fine. The transformer is the only place where problems could start if it were unloaded, but there is a default load already in place. If a tube amp with an unloaded secondary started to misbehave, other components definitely could be damaged. This is why I...- gdahl
