The absolute morons guide to learning DIY?
Hi everyone, been lurking for a while but haven't posted much. Just finished my first DIY modded grado amp copy but still feel like I don't know a damned thing about how this electronics stuff works. Fortunately I had a friend to do all the layout and electronics stuff for me but I'd like to...- JackCrank

Post pics of your builds....
So my friend and I just finished putting together our modified grado copies. It was my first project and I still feel like I don't know crap from shineola about it but damn was it fun! All I need now is a knob, a baseplate, and to figure out one little grounding issue and it'll be perfect. Sorry...- JackCrank

The great leap forward (amp question)
I know this isn't exactly a source question but it does have to do with amps and I couldn't really think of a better place to post it. Anyways, recently I aged a year and received an amazing present of my dad's old Linn Katan speakers. Considering that speakers were going to be my next upgrade...- JackCrank

Buying a DAC in NYC
Yeah that'd be cool but i'm looking at upgrading amps later and I'm hoping to build a relationship with a dealer in the area. I figure start small and maybe a deal on some b-stock might follow?- JackCrank

Buying a DAC in NYC
Anyone know of any places to buy a $200-300 USB DAC in NYC? I've seen the Cayin DAC at stereo exchange and it looks dope but $800 is definitely out of my price range. Also are there any moderately priced tube DAC's out there? I know there are a ton of places to buy online but I prefer to buy...- JackCrank

New comp + airport express = unhappy sound
Interesting, i'll have to look in to both of those. Are there any places in nyc that sell em? Also are there any relatively cheap tube dac's?- JackCrank

Suggestions for cheap, very small bookshelves?
Very very small? Audioengine2's or maybe some of the m-audio studiophile's? -
Recable akg k81's myself, or who can do it on a budget?
I'd love to know this too except I got the 181's and the cable that came with it sucks and the casing stripped off.- JackCrank

Yeah I definitely wanna get to that stage anyway but baby steps my friend, baby steps. I'm generally a complete dumdum when it comes to math (although I did kick ass at the grade-school math section of bar-trivia the other day) so I'm kinda daunted by getting into anything more complicated than...- JackCrank

New comp + airport express = unhappy sound
Well I'd say budget is no more than $300, preferably 200-250 and I listen to mostly 70's/early 80's metal (mostly Black Sabbath and Sabbath inspired doom), punk/hardcore of all kinds, powerpop, and that kinda crap. Got any recc's? Also which dynaudio's do you have? I've heard their break-in...- JackCrank

New comp + airport express = unhappy sound
Most definitely, figured I should leave the speaker chat outta the headphone forum though. Yeah my next upgrade is gonna be a sweet set of horns. I'm between Devore, Totem, Dynaudio, and possibly but probably not Epos. Now if only I had the cash... For better DACs what kinda money do I have...- JackCrank

I'd love to but I'm not really the electronics ninja and the parts are already ordered. Also for a first amp build I'd be kinda nervous working with the kinds of voltages required to get a tube set up running. Who know's though, if these go well maybe I'll throw a hybrid together, the dude...- JackCrank

That's pretty sound advice right there. Quote: Originally Posted by juniperlater I have a Pro-Ject Xpression III and it is great. My vote would be this: If you do not have a cartridge budget, buy the MMF-5.1 $699 w/ a $299 cart is a good deal. If you have a cartridge budget...- JackCrank

So I'm working on my first DIY amp with my friend (who I believe is also a headfi-er. It's an improved grado clone and since I'm a complete moron when it comes to electronics I worked on the casing. I just finished the cutting, routing, and first stage of stain and I'm totally stoked. here's...- JackCrank

Quality "Budget" Turntable?
The debut and the P1 are nice but as someone who started on 1200's moved up to a debut and now owns a project expression III, the P3 or the ExIII are a slamming deal for the money. That crap sounds like rainbows, sunshine, and the thundering of unicorn hooves.- JackCrank

nice to look at but perhaps not the most environmentally friendly? Eh nuff being a buzzkill. If you dont mind me asking how does the tubebox compare to other phono stages youve tried? They look killer but im currently loving my grado- JackCrank

Vinyl Lovers! I need help choosing a turntable!
I've been on project tables for about 5 years now and haven't had a complaint to date. I started with the debut and recently moved up to the expressionIII. I'd say that Rega or the Project are both great deals. I started with a 1200 when i was 12/13 and there was a definite improvement when i...- JackCrank

New comp + airport express = unhappy sound
For reference my standard of what sounds good comes out of the fact that I listen pretty much exclusively to vinyl when I'm not on my bike. I run a Pro-Ject expression III through a Grado PH1 phonostage with a sumiko bluepoint Evo III cartridge all hooked up with Nordost blue heaven...- JackCrank

New comp + airport express = unhappy sound
Ok so in talking to a friend at digitalfix he told me about audioengine's wireless transmitter setup (and it sounded like a pretty solid set up so I picked one up to try. (Pricey at $150USD a pop) but as soon as threw it in my system it made a huge difference. First of all it never has to wait...- JackCrank

New comp + airport express = unhappy sound
Hi all, so I just picked up a new Mac tower and I'm looking to run it through two different systems, my Linn Classik/AE Aegis Evo1, and through my Grado RS-1's and currently they both sound like crap. Currently the headphone situation is that I'm building an amp and that should take care of...- JackCrank
