Orthodynamic Roundup
Strain reliefs are also different. Black strain reliefs were shortened when I recabled but you can still see the difference The TDS-15 react very well to damping density changes. Their FR kind of reminds me of the Stax L500 (except for upper treble of course), here is the current lighter...- ludoo

Orthodynamic Roundup
Crappy group shot of the two TDS-15 I got from Micon: the gray ones arrived today and after a quick pad swap they are sounding as good as the black, with some minor differences probably due to the slightly different damping. The TDS-15 have grown on me, I really really like their sound...- ludoo

Orthodynamic Roundup
Absolutely agree, even though I have a soft spot for small supra orthos and find the TDS-15 very nice from a design, practicality PoV as they fold very small for easy carrying. I would never trade this for a larger enclosure, especially since the only thing you can buy now are circum, especially...- ludoo

Absolutely no problem, the more info the better. I just like them a lot despite the small soundstage. YMMV 😀- ludoo

Bought a pair from Micon (and TDS-16/16, TDS-16/40, TDS-7), smooth transaction and the phones sound fantastic! Measurements are in the ortho thread.- ludoo

Orthodynamic Roundup
FInally had some time to try the TDS-15 I received from @micon. I bought them again after having had a pair 10+ years ago as I did not do them justice at the time. Just replacing the terrible stock pads is enough to make them pretty good in comparison to all my other planars. Next is a recable...- ludoo

Show us your vintage headphones!
I tried bidding on the Y! JP pair last week, and dropped out fairly quickly as the price was going up. This is awesome and I'm really glad you got a pair and are sharing this!- ludoo

Orthodynamic Roundup
Here it is, it can probably be done better but this was a simple way to test it. I've seen it in some headphones done with felt integral to the pads (Audeze EL-8?) or even thick adhesive foam (Oppo PM-3). This is the effect on FR of just adding the mids lens (again, I use a flat plate so...- ludoo

Orthodynamic Roundup
Changing the topic and moving on to more modern headphones (but still planars), I've been slowly going through my stash catching up with measuring and modding, and put the Audeze Sine on the operating table. Sharing a few bits of info in case they're interesting from a modding PoV. These are...- ludoo

Interesting stuff. You sure these come from a Russian ortho? I remember seeing a pic of the driver iterations for the TDS-16, and yours don't match any (been trying to find the pic again with no luck).- ludoo

Orthodynamic Roundup
Small update on the TDS-16: spent a little time trying different damping schemes, and they are very sensitive to damping amount/materials, and of course pads make a huge difference. This is my final scheme compared to one of my good modded HP-3. What you end up with is basically a small...- ludoo

Orthodynamic Roundup
Driver is 50mm. Damping scheme inside is fairly simple: - one disc of thin fabric in front of the driver, which is not just for dust protection as it provides some air resistance - in the back a sandwich of one disc of the same fabric, one disc of thin foam, and one disc of the same fabric...- ludoo

I have not opened them yet but will soon. I also read driver is supposed to be 55mm, a tight fit in a 60mm baffle. :) STrange that you find them insensitive, I use a Fiio K7 and it has absolutely no problems driving them. For comparison, I switched all my Yamahas to balanced to get more power...- ludoo

Orthodynamic Roundup
Given how much I love the small driver Yamahas, I decided it was high time I started branching out into their Russian clones. I briefly had a TDS-15 12 years ago, and while I loved its design I never had the time, patience and materials to sit down and mod them. This time around I started from...- ludoo

Stax SR-X1 (new entry model)
Isn't damping the usual disc of rockwool common to most orthos/stats from that period? I know it is for the SR-X, did not yet open one of my SR-5s to check.- ludoo

Stax SR-X1 (new entry model)
Agree that driver size looks similar, hack job but should make the comparison easier. Really looking forward to these, and once I get them if they are circumaural (which would make sense given the current state of the market) I'll try swapping in the same supra pads I use with the SR-Xs.- ludoo

Audeze LCD-1
Finally found the time to make a balanced cable for my LCD-1, which is also shorter than the original one and more practical for my typical use when traveling. I only had large 3.5mm connectors on hand but I'm not displeased with the result, and they feel very sturdy. Cable is Mogami mini quad...- ludoo
