TEAC UD-301
well after a bit of fuss and hassle it's here, it's setup and so far it's working exactly as i'd hoped with no issues alongside the 6i6 as an input device. Thanks again for your help and advice; I'm off to find better copies of my favourite albums again!- adrockthewalrus

appreciated. I did try to close the image by clicking the Cancel button in it... I quite like the idea of having optical out for all my system sounds etc, then specifying the usb connection as the output device in foobar/vlc/whatever, and switching inputs on the DAC when i want to listen to...- adrockthewalrus

That's fantastic, thanks for testing! It does sound like it'll do what I need and my previous issues have been down to not being able to run two different focusrite usb drivers together. I'll try to get one delivered Thursday when I'm home and give it a try :D- adrockthewalrus

Thanks Xyrium, good to know. I'm fine with needing to specify the audio device in whichever media player or letting those that don't let you just run through the default. I've had a bit of a faff to test the onboard optical out and after some faffing to get my old emu 0404 synced at 96KHz...- adrockthewalrus

No problem, I really appreciate you trying to help me out :) Is there an option to use the UD-301 without ASIO? (appreciate you may not be able to answer)- adrockthewalrus

hmm, i only have optical on the onboard sound which i'm trying to avoid using, and it sounds like i wouldn't be able to leave it as the default device; I'd need one soundcard for general usage, possibly another just for an optical out connection, then the UD-301. I've always had issues with...- adrockthewalrus

excellent, thank you, just the sort of response i was looking for! Doing that on the 6i6 was a hard crash the moment a second application was started. Once the 2i4 is replaced, i can hook the 6i6 back up solely for input purposes (they will not play nice hooked up together, windows struggles...- adrockthewalrus

I'm considering this as an upgrade for a scarlett 2i4 i use on my desktop PC; it replaces the headphone amp, i don't use the scarlett's inputs anymore, and i can run it's output to the amp powering my speakers (that i want to replace with active monitors down the line, after upgrading the...- adrockthewalrus

sorry for the double post, coincidentally found that the UE 900 is currently ~50% off via logitechs UK store (169 instead of £329): http://ue.logitech.com/en-gb/product/ue900?crid=1375&affid=1546795 bit gutted i paid full price at the start of december, but still really pleased with them.- adrockthewalrus

i suggested clear nail polish, haven't tried it myself though. i still haven't had any issues, i've had a couple of cut outs on the right side, but only when i've moved my head suddenly and only in the first couple of weeks, no problems for the last month.- adrockthewalrus

been using mine for a couple of weeks now, mostly at work and on my commute. Sound has been fantastic, though i'm still working on what fit feels/sounds best for me. No problems with them cutting out, buzzing or screeching, and there isn't a mark showing on them yet. spybenj, i use mine with...- adrockthewalrus

Recomend me a 'good' entry level tube headphone amp.
well I'm going to make ICs for the LD next weekend, though the van damme is marginally too big to fit through the cable entry on my RCA plugs, so I'm torn between stripping back a bit more outer sheathe and heat shrinking the last few inches before the plug, or stripping the wire down entirely...- adrockthewalrus

er, i think they're the smaller ones, i'd need to dig out the others for comparison but I've tended to go with longer/narrower tips as they make a better seal and the silicone is more comfortable for me than foam tips. I'll try some others out at some point but out of the ones they came with and...- adrockthewalrus

Had another weekend burning in the LD, i'm not noticing any change in sound but i suppose doing it gradually over several weeks means i'm probably adjusting with it as it goes. The dt880s sound great though, really pleased with them. As a result I've made a cable for my MS-1s, though i've yet to...- adrockthewalrus

well i got the UE 900s. I'm having to use the longer tips form my RE-0s, the double-flanged ones, but the fit with them is superb and i'm enjoying the sound a lot. Certainly different from the RE-0s but the bass sounds pretty well tamed and isn't overpowering anything else. Overall pretty...- adrockthewalrus

Recomend me a 'good' entry level tube headphone amp.
I imagine there are few comparisons of mkIII with mkIV because they're relatively similar, few people are likely to have owned both as anyone with a mkIII would probably upgrade to something above a mkIV, and someone with a mkIV has no need to downgrade/try out a mkIII. I will fix this! All...- adrockthewalrus

i did and i love my mkIII so far, but i'm not sure about providing any comparison with anything else :) I would heartily recommend getting one though. it's taken me over a week of idle browsing, but today i managed to finish reading this thread :) thoughts, before my imminent UE 900 purchase: 1. Spent another weekend enjoying/burning in my LD mkIII, and on wednesday I'm ordering the dt880s (and some new IEMS, and more RCA plugs/cable) :) The sound through the headphones is awesome, especially when compared with the speaker output stage which is running to a pair of gale bookshelf...- adrockthewalrus

harsh dude, I'm guessing no insurance to cover it? now you've got to find a suitably small flammable boat and give them a viking burial. Few headphones go out by losing a fight with a car.- adrockthewalrus

I used my RE-0s with my iphone 5, using my fallback shure 110s now, but i have the volume around 60-70% most of the time with either. Is that too high? how do people actually tell the volume they're listening to in dB? I have the EU limit thing disabled and I've just started using the Denon...- adrockthewalrus

Replacement for RE-0s?
I'm considering taking the jump to the UE 900s, though the Brainwavz B2 looks tempting. neither appears to really be the same signature, but what I'm reading suggests I'd like them for similar reasons to liking the RE-0, I'm reading up on the HF-5s now. Might have to see if I can borrow any... -

my super.fi 3s still work :) when the cable frayed away at the Y join quite badly, i tried to fix them but the sleeve on the cable appears to be flexible and looks like it was stretched when they were intact. the cables gone at the jack end on mine. I'll try replacing it and failing that attempt a full re-cable, but this is the only issue I've had with them since i got them, i think that was back in '08.
