I don't get a chance to listen to music seriously much these days, but when I do, my XRs are all I need. They really are something special. Best audio (and impulse) purchase I've ever made by far.

Where did you happen to order these from? I am very interested in ordering them, but I want to be sure I receive the redesigned ones and not remaining stock of the old design.

I don't know, I'm listening to "Voyager" on my XR right now and it doesn't sound muffled to me. It's certainly warm, but that's how the song is supposed to sound, to my ears anyway. I just can't hear anything getting masked up top. The claps, the phaser, and even all the little blips and clicks...

Yeah, they both really are incredible. What it came down to for me personally was how full-bodied and natural the XR sounds. I just couldn't give that up. And I know the SR made details in the upper frequencies more audible, which made switching to it lead me to believe I preferred the SR. But...

Not to change the subject, but today I was thinking about some comments I read in this thread a while back about people's ER4s dying as a result of being played at too high of volume. Which got me wondering, in a balanced armature driver, what would physically cause driver failure? The reed? The...

The foam tips included with the ER4SR/XR are completely unlistenable for me personally. They are simply much too thick for my ears, preventing me from inserting them deep enough into my ear. As a result, they end up sounding extremely sibilant, with a spike in their response around the 7-8...

If I had the choice, I would like Etymotic to release 2 new kinds of tips. The first tip would be simply a larger version of the stock frost triple-flange tips (essentially the same size as the large clear triple-flanges, but with the same material as the frost). The second would be like a...

Just thought I'd provide my 2 cents for anyone deciding between the SR and XR. Like a few others on here, I was able to directly compare the SR and XR back-to-back, so even though I only have the XR now, I feel I still have a pretty good idea of what the differences are between the two. First...

My ears do not agree. To me, the treble on the XR and the SR were pretty much the same, even when I used to A/B them one after the other. They may have different drivers in them, but Etymotic tuned them both to be so similar in that region. I think it's really phenomenal.

Like others on here, I too love the ER4 + Shure olive tips. My only issue is that they fit too tight on the stems of the earphones. I'm too afraid to even twist them on all the way for fear of not being able to get them back off. This was admittedly an issue even with Shure's own earphones, but...

Heh, yeah, that's really saying something. Especially coming from a sound engineer.

Ouch... I've never heard the W40 myself, but based on that, I'll happily stay at 3%. :)

I've had the opposite experience as well: listening to the SR for a while and then switching back to the XR and hearing this wonderful, full-bodied sound again while still retaining the majority of the minute details I was getting with the SR.

Yes, the XR really is incredible. I was genuinely serious that I don't see myself buying any other earphones. They have my dream sound signature down to a T. And yes, there are things the SR can do ever so slightly better as has already been mentioned, but to my ears there's nothing the...

So was I. Mine do hit 1 dB off. Minus, and almost positive between 100 and 10k, and clearly more than that beyond 10k. But it is technically within spec.

I understand that 13-14k is pretty high, but I mean, that's a bit off.   EDIT: Your XRs don't hit 1 dB off either? Man, I got super unlucky DX

Yeah, I know. It's just above 10k they're off by as much as 5 dB in some spots.... Oh well.
