I found the FH9 bass better for classical/pop, far too slow for metal. I'd recommend FD7 for metal instead

I'd recommend the Etymotic ER2XRs, great bass control for price, and made (I believe) to address the bass-light concerns of their SR models Difficult to find a flat-response IEM under $100

Indeed - This problem is easily solved with patience/self-control. Helps to wait and see what rises to the top in each price category instead of buying immediately upon release.

Something seemed a tad bit off for the FH9 sound for me as well. Technically speaking, the FH9 is high quality, well extended with no harshness or roll-off on either end, from bass to treble. The bass though....its clean, but too powerful. The bass makes itself overly present in every song...

I did say “large”, not “largest” ;) I think Sony is the IEM DD size king, 16mm in their EX1000s too Relative to the vast majority of DDs tho (which around 10mm), 13.6 is massive, almost double the surface area….again, not like it matters :)
