Etymotic Research EVO impressions and discussion thread

Yes. The change in sound is interesting. There's more treble air but a bit sharp and that affects the timbre a little bit.

It's worth noting that most of that goes away with foam tips. I really don't have any issues with the stock foams or the Shure Olives in terms of cable noise.

    Audio-Technica ATH-R70x - In-Depth Review & Impressions

I had both. The HD800 needs some mods or EQ. I think the R70x is more refined in its tuning and less grainy in the treble (HD800 has a bunch of annoying peaks) but it feels like it's missing something. I think the issue is that the treble is a bit too relaxed in some places and a bit peaky at...

I like the Etymotic target because it leans slightly towards warmth in the treble and mids compared to Harman. I liked the ER4 a lot except that it didn't quite follow the target completely. Some of the upper mids/treble was recessed around 6-8K compared to the lift above 8K. Also, getting the...

    Audio-Technica ATH-R70x - In-Depth Review & Impressions

So is there any place where you can buy original pads for this model? The official website doesn't have them listed. This is a bummer considering this is one of their best headphones and the pads are going to fall apart some day.

Do they make pure silver cables? I'm guessing they do.

    Audio-Technica ATH-R70x - In-Depth Review & Impressions

My A90 can run it on single ended in medium gain at 40% and it's plenty loud. I'm considering getting a balanced cable but I want to use them on the go as well.

    Audio-Technica ATH-R70x - In-Depth Review & Impressions

I have a fancy aftermarket cable for it already but the seller warned me that the 3.5mm connector was a bit dodgy. A silver cable would be nice. I'm also interested in potential aftermarket pads though the sound might change too much.

    Audio-Technica ATH-R70x - In-Depth Review & Impressions

Wow. The R70x is easily the best headphone I've heard so far, and this includes the HD600, HD800, and LCD-2. It just sounds so right out of the box. I only hear a slight harshness in the treble but it's not a big deal lol.

It adds harshness though because of the ear canal interaction near 9K (I also get a slight 11K peak as well with the "proper" fit). Also, in my experience, at least with the ER4XR, the drivers don't seem to respond that well to bass EQs (the driver can distort quite easily).

I use the ER3XR currently (also had the ER4 variants recently) with the Shure olive tips and the upper treble extension is up there with some expensive IEMs lol but the tuning overall could use more work. I'm guessing the EVO will be even more competitive in that regard.

Will this also work best with foam tips? They appear to be compatible with the existing Etymotic tips but in my experience foams offer the best isolation and bass impact and treble extension/clarity.

I had the opposite experience. To me they sound much more airy with the Shure tips but they introduce a peak at 11K. I insert them as deep as possible and the upper treble is very clear. The issue is that the 6-8K dip is more apparent now. The softness I experience comes from that dip and it is...

Is it possible to find the ER4B anywhere anymore? Including used? It doesn't seem to be the case.

Yeah, the Thieaudio Monarch that I owned for a while had an issue like that with a slightly peaky 8K region (which made it sound a bit more spacious compared to the ER4) but it was nowhere near piercing. It did sound fairly sterile because it had that 10K dip (minus 3-4 dB) and bass boost...

I had the very opposite experience. Your typical modern shell design is much worse in terms of fit compared to the cylindrical design of the ER series. With the shell design, the fit can be extremely finicky. If you push the earphone too much into the ear canal, the seal can break. Push it too...

Will Etymotic publish the frequency response of this IEM at some point? That would be interesting given that the company has made comments about the midrange tuning and stuff when the earphone was announced. I've had a pair of more expensive multi-driver in-ears recently but I found that while...

Diana: the second release by Abyss Headphones!

Subjective listening is still important for finding tonal issues because measurements are not fully readable above 8K (which probably explains detail differences between headphones that aren't visible on any graph).

Diana: the second release by Abyss Headphones!

He was talking about resonances happening in the headphone due to specific materials being used. There is no concept of resonance outside the context of an actual tuning target and the subsequent measurements. They've done some subsequent research in many countries in Europe, Asia, and of...

You cannot tune headphones blindly like that lol. I don't think that you understand human hearing or the concept of a headphone target.

Diana: the second release by Abyss Headphones!

You're missing the point though. Harman research isn't telling people what they should like. It's attempting to study what kind of sound target most people would prefer in order to have a baseline for developing headphones. Measuring and listening to them are both equally valid tools.

Diana: the second release by Abyss Headphones!

It's mainly their full size over-ears that suffer from unit variation and apparently it has something to do with the pads (they kept making changes to them). The in-ears are tuned weird presumably because that was the best they could do and that's why they have the cipher cable that applies an...

That's because his LCD-4 was a dud. Audeze has a big problem with unit variation and tuning headphones in general. Yeah, they do have an interesting sound but I think certain refinements would be welcome.

Harman research proved that they do but audiophiles will always choose faith over science. https://www.listeninc.com/wp/media/Perception_and_-Measurement_of_Headphones_Sean_Olive.pdf
