Looking forward to seeing how this progresses and to hear if these HPs are substantially different from the 009S to warrant a purchase. Subscribed.

STAX SR-009S new flagship electrostatic earspeakers released (with impressions)

The sounstage is the Achilles heel more than anything else on the Utopia. Utopia has a tiny sounstage compared to both the 009s and Susvara. It is unfortunate. But none are bad headphones by any means. If anything you get more perspectives on the same music.

STAX SR-009S new flagship electrostatic earspeakers released (with impressions)

The 009s with something like the BHSE blows the Utopia away in terms of both details and Soundstage. I personally like the Susvara better than both. It has the most expansive and cohesive soundstage of the two. 009s has slightly more clarity/presence but overall the susvara presentation strikes...

    Bowers&Wilkins new flagship the P9!

IIRC, I was even able to drive the P9 straight from the iPhone without any issues. It’s one of the things that actually makes these a fairly decent travel headphone. I never looked into it, but if there are EQ apps for the iPhone that can iron out some of the bass hump, it would actually be an...

How did you figure this out about your ear canals? I’ve been wondering about something like this with my own hearing, because I prefer a more “British” laid-back sound. Speakers that are too flat above like 8k seem like they are piercing my brain. The sibilance-ranges in particular can drive me...

I generally try to go as neutral as possible with equipment. Basically so mastering differences can shine through as much as possible. I’ve only played any recent vinyl purchase (those purchased over the last 15 years) once each. I have a decent collection of Japanese remasters of classic rock...

I enjoy having different feels based on the same theme. It was also fun putting together a giant collection of MFSL vinyl and CDs over the years. It’s helpful to think of each experience and nuance as different and not better or worse. Each variation on the master is a different take on the same...

The reason to collect SACD and DVD-A are for the alternate master of albums you enjoy. Much like vinyl as well, where often the vinyl version was mastered differently than the digital versions due to the limitations of the medium (which allows one to have a decent version of many albums that...

This is exactly why I have a few Oppo UDPs laying around the house in their boxes basement. I have thousands and thousands of CDs, SACDs, and DVD-As and I wanted a few backup players before they stopped making them in case of breakage down the road. Yeah, some of the stuff I listen to is...

    Bowers&Wilkins new flagship the P9!

Nice, lots of fun stuff! I have other setups around my house. I’ve been into this hobby since I was 14 (now in my mid-40s), around the same time I started playing guitar. I try to flip stuff but usually I’m too busy. I have a near-field ML Montis setup in the basement on a PrimaLuna DiaLogue HP+...

Yeah, It’s nothing personal. I love B&W, so for me it’s a bit disappointing what they did with these and it was obviously aimed at a certain market. I love my surround sound 803 D3 setup, and it took me months to find the flattest response area in the room where the speakers disappeared, but...

It’s great to take some time, but the glaring issue with these particular headphones was obvious to the poster. Why should he take more time if he already knows he doesn’t like the “signature” sound? He wants to fix the issue, not live with it (or maybe not based on his post after this one—but I...

Not really. It’s standard transducer science at this point that people prefer a flat frequency response in double blind tests (with a slightly raised bass). I honestly don’t care what you buy and (think you) enjoy. It’s your money dude. Spend it on whatever you want. But when you encourage...

    Bowers&Wilkins new flagship the P9!

 Milk and Apple Sauce don’t have absolute metrics of perfection in relationship to one another. Headphones do have that metric. Of course, if you prefer your music to sound different because you’re bored, go ahead, but it won’t necessarily be close to what the artist/engineer wanted...

Do you have to wait a week before drinking milk after eating apple sauce for the milk to taste good? The issue here is the assumption that headphones can have a frequency response all over the map and still be a good headphones. Thus, one headphone can be milk while another is apple sauce...

    Bowers&Wilkins new flagship the P9!

This conversation makes me wonder why some people listen to music if they’re bored enough with their music recodings that they need to stretch the frequency response out of wack with badly designed headphones. I listen to music for the emotional valence and the memories, as well as the sense...

Because the 7-8 pair of high-end headphones and ear buds I already own don’t require me to take a week or even a few hours to get used to them when I switch from one pair to another or to just get used to their sound in general. A good headphone doesn’t require that kind of effort to sound good...

    Bowers&Wilkins new flagship the P9!

So he would have to listen to the P9 sounding like garbage for a week (or listen to nothing for a week) anytime he wants to enjoy these headphones (if he can even get used to the overly-ripe bass)? Not sure how this could be remotely appealing to anyone. I think he’s on the right track with...

The issue becomes much less pronounced the more centered the low frequency notes are in the soundstage, so if the guitar is fairly centered you won’t hear it as much. But also, some of these 820s have less shelving than others in that frequency range (as can be seen in some of the posted...

    Sennheiser HD820

Yeah, hits the mark with my experience of the lowest notes of guitar. The notes separate out between the higher and lower harmonics and I’m left with an instrument that is smeared/distorted/split in half with most of the sound (the high lows to highs) closer towards center stage and the lowest...

Yes, it applies to everyone (Is this possibly why Sennheiser doesn’t list the FR above 12khz?). Bass region: Spread spectrum / broad band noise would seem to me to be more helpful to ‘hear’ dips in a frequency response, while something like a sine sweep seems better for equalization programs...
