Meze EMPYREAN - the First Isodynamic Hybrid Array Headphone

Well as I said, that problem mostly seems to have gone away. My Emp is running for 1.5yrs now and is driven by a TT2 through a silver cable fwiw :) /e: oh and also: Some folks seem to believe that the issues (soggy/boomy mid-bass) have to do with the pads being too large and roomy, lots of...

Meze EMPYREAN - the First Isodynamic Hybrid Array Headphone

The only thing that annoyed me with regards to the mids is the mid-bass/upper-bass hump that tends to bleed into/shroud the midrange (to my ears) on some recordings. I like the mids otherwise, and I have found that the mid-bass annoyance has largely subsided. If that's due to getting used to...

Heh. I mean, anything else would be seriously weird and a big problem, considering the price points :)

This sounds like the Arche EQs the Utopia? Couldnt really find an explanation how these "presets" work on the website, though I'll admit I didnt look very hard. If so, neat idea, pretty cool to have that directly in the amp!

Good point. I went through the mentioned test tracks myself the other day and selected a higher listening volume than i am used to - lo and behold, "these things thump" :)

I use Alcantara for that reason (luckily i also prefer the sound signature) - leather is too hot for me. Wow different strokes i guess - I prefer Alcantara because it is cooler to me :D But I also use the LCD-i4 as my summer headphone, nothing covering the ears is by far the best option...

Meze EMPYREAN - the First Isodynamic Hybrid Array Headphone

Oh I remember feeling like this the first few days with Empyrean, a tiny bit. As in, everything feeling just a step or two away, less immediate, less involving (than my LCD-i4s). That is something that definitely resolved itself in the next few weeks due to run-in. It is still never going to be...

Meze EMPYREAN - the First Isodynamic Hybrid Array Headphone

I did like the LCD-4 for it's bass and transparency, the mid-range is a bit strange though and I somehow didnt find them very exciting or involving :( Which sucked, because I LOVE the LCD-i4 and had hoped for the 4 to just be a bigger version of those.

Some dynamic HPs (dunno if that applies to the Utopia) make up for less bass extension by emphasizing upper and mid-bass. Maybe that is part of the deal here? Very few tracks actually have sub-bass (say, below 40-30hz), and the strong point of planars is that they can be strictly linear down to...

Meze EMPYREAN - the First Isodynamic Hybrid Array Headphone

It definitely is my headphone :) I love it, I just feel that it has strengths and weaknesses. Biggest strength = midrange, slight weakness = bass definition, neutral-very good = top end. As long as I don't encounter something significantly better I am glad that I have found such a good overall...

Meze EMPYREAN - the First Isodynamic Hybrid Array Headphone

I doubt it re: Amp (TT2, which is considered a good pairing) or burn-in (have had it since May '19). And the quantity and extension of the bass is perfectly fine to me (actually, it's a lot), as I said. It is just a tiiiiny bit boomy and less defined/impactful than say an LCD-4. Bit more "wet"...

I dont know the Utopia too well, heard it in a shop for a few hours. Its bass didnt stand out too much to me... But fwiw, Empyrean has plenty bass quantity, but doesnt have excessive bass impact/slam or definition. Paired with the midbass hump (200hz, but that got a lot better with run in), to...

Meze EMPYREAN - the First Isodynamic Hybrid Array Headphone

Maybe, but other headphones seem better in technicalities out of the box and don't need a lot of adjusting to get there. I am not worried about my amp and wiring (I have a TT2 and Lavricables Grand). I did play around with EQ a bit, and I found that it did not do me a world of good (can you...

Meze EMPYREAN - the First Isodynamic Hybrid Array Headphone

See that is precisely what I meant when I noted there might be variances in the sound :) To my ears, Empyrean is not the most transparent headphone out there. It sure is transparent and detailed enough, but that is not its biggest strength. I can't speak for Utopia, but I would confidently say...

Meze EMPYREAN - the First Isodynamic Hybrid Array Headphone

Absolutely correct. That's kinda not my point though, right? :) I pointed out that we read of this exact problem more than once. I just meant to say that it is of course possible that a particular Empy is defective (and not just "not run in properly") and could be an explanation why some people...

Meze EMPYREAN - the First Isodynamic Hybrid Array Headphone

Well, I mean, we had at least 1 person in this thread who was describing EXACTLY that problem (congested wall of sound, super-stressful to listen to) and who did run them in without success, ultimately got another set and had no problems of this kind at all. That does sound like a defect...

I have the version without sleeve. the braiding separates into two individual strands and there is some clear heatshrink tubing wrapped around that part. /edit: the resulting two strands are kinda flat, whereas the entire thing below the splitter is square-shaped.

+1 for Lavricables Grand + Empyrean :) A lot of those around here it seems! Being in Germany as well, the shipping was the deciding factor from me. Would love to be able to try a Norne Silvergarde or something like that as well though.

If it does irritate you (it did for me, i like driving IEMs with the TT2 and on the LCD-i4 for example, the current creates a hum): the IFI GroundHog fixes the issue completely.

Curious to hear your reasons - anything that you got fed up with or just generally time to move on to something new? The latter I can relate to :)

Hugo TT 2 by Chord Electronics - The Official Thread

Hi! Noticed the same thing with LCD-i4. According to support, it's common/nothing to worry about. I got a Groundhog+ and am using the spade connector too (it wraps around the PSU connector) - problem solved. Chord support "approved of" the solution.

i got a Oyaide NEO d+ USB Class S. Re: the speed bug: had this with a couple of different cables. and it can be reliably provoked when a process is NOT taking exclusive control (using Tidal for a sec actually fixes it, so it's definitely not Tidal's fault). All i need to do is set the sampling...

Hugo TT 2 by Chord Electronics - The Official Thread

Similar to GreenBow's question, has anyone else seen this? I have set Windows to 192khz (don't ask why, I just have :) ). If I turn off TT2 and then turn it back on while a sound source is still active (say, a browser window with netflix is open or a game is running), TT2 will play everything at...

Hugo TT 2 by Chord Electronics - The Official Thread

Absolutely no problem for me. This depends a lot on your ear shape, though. For example, if I use the small earhooks I am totally fine, if I use the large ones I get hotspots on the back of my ears and it gets really uncomfortable, really fast. With the small ones, I can wear those for hours and...
