Old "King" of R2R DAC Is Dead? Denafrips Terminator-Plus / Terminator+ Arrives

I use A/V sync correction setting for JRiver Media Center. I simply added the Input and Output Latency from the Denafrips ASIO driver and rounded to the nearest millisecond. Seems to work well for me.

DENAFRIPS FPGA Firmware Update (12TH Anniv.)

The change was a bit jarring to me, at first. After removing the Gaia from my chain, I moved the Furutech NCF Booster-Signal that was supporting the middle of my USB cable to under the DAC's USB connection. I also moved a Furutech Clear Line that was next to the power amps' receptacle to where...

DENAFRIPS FPGA Firmware Update (12TH Anniv.)

I was intrigued by your comment and decided to try the Terminator-Plus with the USB input. Might be confirmation bias, but I think it sounds better, too. Besides, the Pink Faun USB bridge and the the Furutech outlet did far more to improve my system's sound quality than the Gaia ever did.

DENAFRIPS FPGA Firmware Update (12TH Anniv.)

Correct. Years ago, PCM would work with the default pinout mode, but not DSD higher than 64fs. Changing the pinout mode would allow DSD to work, but not PCM. Then later on, none of the pinout modes would work for high-bitrate DSD. This issue is believed to be caused by the Gaia DDC. Denafrips...

DENAFRIPS FPGA Firmware Update (12TH Anniv.)

DSD above DSD64 has never worked for me with I2S. Too much noise.

DENAFRIPS FPGA Firmware Update (12TH Anniv.)

Everything worked fine for me following the instructions from the manual. OPT uses the highest clock frequencies and I2S-A disables it and shuts off the Clock Out LED.

DENAFRIPS FPGA Firmware Update (12TH Anniv.)

Requested the new 3.7 firmware for my 2020 Terminator-Plus, received it the next day. It fixed the left/right channel swap with I2S-C (RJ45) and I had to reconfigure the I2S-A (HDMI) pinouts to Mode 2 as well as fiddle with the vaunted Clock Out setting. If there is a rumored firmware update...

New denafrips DDC (Iris and Gaia)

Yes, you are correct. I don't know about the other pins, though. I use a specialized I2S cable from Pink Faun that removes the unneeded conductors. Hopefully, there GND pins between the Gaia and your X26 are the same.

New denafrips DDC (Iris and Gaia)

According to the Denafrips Gaia manual, the pinouts need to be set to Mode 5: 1-0-1 on the Gaia LEDs. This sets the first pins of the DATA, BCK, and LRCK to + and the second pins for each to -.

Are these legit furutech cables? "Furutech Cables" label

Risky click. First time visiting forwarded me to several websites. For one, Furutech parts don't read: "Furutech Cable". None of their cable line-ups resemble that product listed. Furutech (and Pink Faun, which uses Furutech parts) is my favorite accessory manufacturer (check my signature)...

New denafrips DDC (Iris and Gaia)

Yes. I had the Gaia first, then added the USB bridge, then the LPS, and finally, the clock. I also had the Schiit Yggdrasil Analog 2 USB Gen 5 fed by a Singxer SU-6 DDC via AES/EBU.

New denafrips DDC (Iris and Gaia)

This was not obvious to me, but the clocking from USB ports and the PCM/DSD clocking from DAC/DDCs are two separate things, so there's only reclocking between the DDC and DAC, so it's not a waste of money; if you can afford it, go for it! This is very expensive, so I hope you get the same...

New denafrips DDC (Iris and Gaia)

I originally thought I might have made a mistake buying the USB bridge instead of the I2S bridge, but I learned from various websites that the I2S bridge is limited to 24-bit, 192 kHz and does NOT send DSD, has only one output available, and the usual I2S pin-out configuration problems if one...

I am trying to locate an “IIS” cable and don’t seem to be able to find one?

The original poster is using a digital-to-digital converter with a USB input and IIS output. All (s)he needs are the right cable and a compatible DAC.

New denafrips DDC (Iris and Gaia)

You MUST get an audiophile PCIe USB card or you will never reach the full potential of your computer audio system. I have the Pink Faun USB Bridge without the upgraded clock or external linear power supply and it made a MASSIVE improvement to my high-end setup. I should have done this years ago...
