Have good DACs become considerably cheaper in 20 years?

I saw that DAC and it looked interesting, so I wanted to read about it a bit. Not really interested in getting it as a replacement to my current setup, was more interested in how things have changed over the years. I think a lot of people here have more knowledge on that, and can compare.

    Testing audiophile claims and myths

Wow, just read through a big amount of stuff here, just wanted to say thanks for all the in-depth info. Glad to see a lot of people here with a reasonable approach to audio and sound.

Have good DACs become considerably cheaper in 20 years?

Yep, that as well of course. That's why I feel like something that performs as well as 85$ Topping D10 in terms of noise floor and distortion, as well as linearity, would be at least 500$+ in 2002. And because of that, I'm not sure what to think of the Apogee Mini-DAC in context to that. Of...

Connecting DAP to Active Monitor Speakers

You should definitely use a line out. Active monitors don't need pre-amping, so the headphone out signal level will not be correct. For the cable, a 3.5mm (aka mini-jack) line out -> double TS unbalanced (aka jack) would be easiest. Stereo mini-jack -> 2x mono jack cables are fairly common...

Have good DACs become considerably cheaper in 20 years?

I have recently seen an Apogee Mini-Dac, released around the year 2000 for ~1000$, sold for around 200$. I'm not sure how to gauge whether or not that price is low or high by modern standards. Of course, back in early 00-s a DAC that supports 192kHz streaming over USB was a huge deal. These...

Low end. Cheap. Generic. Otherwise bang for buck cable thread!

So I'm looking for an stereo RCA interconnect, and debating between soldering one out of some shielded per-meter coaxial cable and Neutrik connectors, or buying a pre-made one. Both options would be about 15$, be it 4 connectors and a meter of cable, or some 0.75m cable called "Dynavox Perfect...

    What are your dream headphones?

I just saw a used good condition type of listing for XB500 on Amazon UK for 99 pounds, in case you're interested. Never tried them myself but heard very good things.

    Best Desktop Amp?

With this kind of budget, probably the SPL Phonitor x. SPL are very well known in the pro sector, and their DA conversion is used for a lot of mastering rigs, which is pretty much the most demanding task for audio gear.

    Audio-Technica ART Monitor Series Refreshed: A2000Z, A1000Z, A900Z, A500Z

I wonder why there's no measurements of these anywhere. I'd really love to see individual ones, and how they compare between each other and to previous generations of that ART line.

Over-the-ear headphones which keep ears cool

I think I read everything correctly, you're saying OP can't find what they're looking for, I'm saying they most certainly can (no pun intended). Although I agree different people sweat differently, and climate influences that even more, you can still compare headphones on how likely they're...

    Looking for upgrade from ATH-M50's

Have you considered the higher-end Audio Technica headphones? I'm a big fan of my ATH-A1000z, and can def recommend them because they fit your desciprition. Their sound is exactly that, similar yet warmer and more detailed. I went through many before finally getting to these, and they don't...

Over-the-ear headphones which keep ears cool

Lmao what... Less than 10 years ago this was near a top-of-the-line price, of course you can find a headphone that isn't sweaty for under 600 bucks. People here sometimes forget how much 600 is, honestly. Have you tried big Beyerdynamics with breathable velour earpads? DT880, DT1990, T1. They...

    Upgrade from DT770s $300-600

I think for good bass something like Sony MDR-Z7, any Audio-Technica from the AIR or ART lines, Fostex TH-X00, or Denon D7200. NightOwl might be an option, but wouldn't say they fit the "detailed" description.

    Audio-Technica ATH-AWKT Announcement Thread

OK, thank you for the detailed reply, and for the listening notes earilier in the thread! Seems like you're really helping me out with some AT knowledge here haha, also in the R70x thread.

    Audio-Technica ATH-R70x - In-Depth Review & Impressions

Ah OK I see! Still quite interesting though, especially reading through this thread seems like a promising piece of gear. I liked the positive and detailed comparison with DT-880, as it's the headphone I've owned for longest and can compare to the easiest.

Are we going to talk about these new Beyer/Massdrop 177x?

Does anyone have experience comparing the 177x to the original 1770 pro? Seeing as how the impedance is totally different, I guess the driver/transducer underwent some major changes, so I'm wondering how much of the same I can expect from the 177x. I tried the 1770 and really loved them, but...

    Audio-Technica ATH-R70x - In-Depth Review & Impressions

Have there been comparisons between the R70x and the older versions of ATH-AD headphones? I have seen a lot of good things about the AD2000, but they're a bit hard to find. I'm wondering if the R70x may be a comparable choice?

    Audio-Technica ATH-AWKT Announcement Thread

Isn't the design is quite a change from the previous generations? Looks like the biggest change they've made to closed headphones in this line even. The cables are removable on these, like the ADX5000! Also the headband is just a solid one piece, with adjustable size, instead of the one size...

Listening with speakers and open-back headphones simultaneously dramatically improved the soundstage!

A forum dedicated to headphones might be the worst possible place for me to voice an opinion like this, but with good enough speakers, here's what works best: first turn the speakers volume up to a good comfortable amount, turn the headphone volume down to about barely audible, and then take the...

Does the DT880 really have a recessed midrange?

I've also seen this criticism and never got it. Overall their sound is so neutral an barely needs an EQ, I can't say any part of the frequency spectrum is "recessed". Of course there are some parts that people can dislike. Lacking sub-bass? I could see that. Highs a bit accentuated? Also true...

Shure SRH840 - not much love on head-fi, why?

Supporting this! Tried them recently, along with 940 and 1540, and gotta say all three were nice. For this low of a price, the 840 is great - good build, neutral sound, punchy dynamics, isolation good enough for tracking and monitoring, as well as portable/shared workplace use cases. A tried and...

Most underrated and overrated headphone? For a bit of fun :)

Overrated: Oppo PM-3. I bought them at one point because they were recommeneded at every corner, and even compared to a "closed-back DT880", which are my favorite headphones. Overall they weren't bad at all, but they didn't sound significantly better than some other closed-backs that cost half...

    Neumann NDH 20

I usually prefer "pro" sounding audio equipment to the "fun" tuned sound signatures, so I was very excited to hear this headphones based on the reviews and decriptions on here, and recently finally got the chance. Tried them in a large German pro audio store with many other headphones to compare...

WE WANT MUD! Dark headphones appreciation thread

Seconded! I am using the MDR-1A for more than a year now, and for me it's pretty much the headphone for stuff like boom bap hip-hop, industrial techno or death metal. Also possibly the most comfortable fit. Also can't say they "lack" higher frequencies, there just isn't an accent on them...
