I only know the result. I believe they downsample, but could it be that they store multiple copies of each track? I can imagine them storing an MP3 track in addition to the highest-available Hi-Res track, but it doesn't seem efficient to also store every Hi-Res resolution in-between.

The tracks are delivered to Qobuz from the labels at a specific resolution, and all you're controlling with the app is whether you will stream it at the original or a downsampled level. In my example above, you can see I have selected 24/192 as my maximum, but the track I was playing is natively...

They've clarified that their "existing MQA catalogue will continue to be available on the platform." For now, I assume. https://www.whathifi.com/news/tidal-is-introducing-hi-res-flac-to-its-hifi-plus-subscription-tier

    Tidal Masters & MQA Thread!

MQA has entered administration, which is the UK equivalent of US Chapter 11 bankruptcy. But we don't know what this means. This is the best analysis I've seen so far: https://www.ecoustics.com/news/mqa-bankruptcy/ tl;dr summary: they may have done this to enable the separate sale of their...

This is not the MQA thread [that's here] but since we're here, I will share what seems to me the best analysis I've seen so far: https://www.ecoustics.com/news/mqa-bankruptcy/ tl;dr — they may have gone into administration to enable separate sale of their Bluetooth division, while the rest of...

Thanks for the reminder. I thinks I was grandfathered in at a lower monthly rate for a while, and forgot all about it.

I'm not seeing this on my monthly Studio streaming payment, and I'm in the same US state. Could be only for downloads, but I can't imagine why. I also use PayPal for Tidal, to avoid a foreign transaction fee that showed up on my regular credit card years ago.

Thanks for the background. That's the way it works now, but they used to be independently adjustable so clearly you're right they don't have to be tied to Exclusive.

    Tidal Masters & MQA Thread!

I'm still subscribing to Tidal and Qobuz, endlessly comparing. I've no interest in the other on-demand music streaming services. Have to admit though, I mostly just listen to four CD-quality FLAC streams from internet radio station Radio Paradise. They support MQA only for BlueOS at this time...

Version 2.32.0.12 here. After I toggle Exclusive Mode on, the other two grey out and can't be changed. The solution for me was to first toggle Force Volume on, then toggle Exclusive Mode on. I don't use Passthrough because I've switched back to a Schiit DAC, so I left that toggled off.

Interesting. All I can suggest is to make sure Tidal has exclusive control of the sound in that same settings panel. Can't help beyond that.

The speaker icon at the lower right should be grayed out. If not, from the user menu at the upper left go to "Settings" > "Streaming", under "Sound" next to "Sound Output" click "(More settings)", and select "Force Volume".

All I can suggest is that you also ask in two more places: Audiophile Style has given refuge to the last remnants of the Pono forums here, and before that some of those folks also started a Facebook Group here.

I hope that's just a temporary solution, and suggest you also report it with your device model here on Head-Fi and tag Davy, then send a log from the app if requested.

Here's a report that says some people can hear a difference, and some people can't. http://www.doc.gold.ac.uk/~mas03dm/papers/SoundQuality_WilliamsonSouthMullensiefen_ICMPC2014.pdf It seems nobody can really be sure about this. Technically that's a macron not an umlaut, but either way seems very unnecessary, at least for English speakers. "Audio nirvana", we get it. Maybe the pronunciation is more confusing in French? If you want more options, I mostly listen to Qobuz using LMS/Squeezebox around the house and USB Audio Player Pro on my Android phone. But to match the Qobuz apps' rich full content, Audirvana and/or Roon may be worth their prices.
