    Millett "Starving Student" hybrid amp

Having been away from this scene for a while I decided to dig out the SS and crank it up again…. Sounds SO sweet through my Grado’s… I got to thinking that I would like to pair this little amp with a power amp so I can play music through some loud speakers instead of headphones. What I would...

    Orthodynamic Roundup

I have been reading this thread with a lot of interest. Having recently inherited a mint set of Yamaha HP-1 from a friend who was throwing them out, I would be interested in others opinions on these? Worth keeping or not? Mods if required? Thanks Andy in NZ

    Millett "Starving Student" hybrid amp

Just pull them out with pliers or side cutters. Screws will go in their place easily enough... They are supposed to be soldered to a PCB but are easily adaptable...

    Millett "Starving Student" hybrid amp

Just use the latest build you can find. Differences are minimal and they all sound wonderful. I use mine every day.

    Millett "Starving Student" hybrid amp

Have a look at Pete Millets original build thread, explains the ground plane. It's basically a decent sized piece of whatever material (copper, aluminium...) that everything grounds to including the pcb, volume pot body, input and power negative etc.... helps a lot with ground noise etc... A...

    Millett "Starving Student" hybrid amp

Yeah that's the one I used. Went together nicely, no real issues or tricky bits. For a first time project it's definitely a viable option. For what you put into it you get a very decent sound!! I got lucky and found the power supply on trade me so they are around... Here are the other amps I...

    Millett "Starving Student" hybrid amp

Sweet as Man, I'm in Tauranga so not that far away.. Tubes: 12AU7 Chinese ones. Not sure if "boutique" tubes sound any different but these sound impressive enough... Final design ??? I just filled the PCB as required using the best components I could get / afford. The trick for a quiet end...

    Millett "Starving Student" hybrid amp

Thanks. I got most of the components from RS Components in NZ, the rest off Mouser NZ I believe. The PCB was from Fred on this forum, but on a different thread. If you cant get one, I have a spare that I can sent you as a last resort. I made the case from custom wood that I skinned with Rimu...

    Millett "Starving Student" hybrid amp

Don't worry, bottlehead crack. Yeah I'm keen to build one but I can't afford a kit sent to me in NZ.... heck, I built a SSMH for a reason... I'm keen to get my hands on a schematic and manual though but I can't find one anywhere!!

Stand down, Bottlehead Crack... Any good for a follow on build from the SSMH? What's a speedball in relation to this amp?

    Millett "Starving Student" hybrid amp

Stand down, I figured it out. I had the earth and one of the input signal wires switched. After testing and retesting everything it's now perfect. No hiss, no hum, just clean tube music! It drives my Grados beautifully as well as my Yamaha HP-1's Thank you to all involved in this project...

    Millett "Starving Student" hybrid amp

Built my amp, ran good on start up. The music sounds to my ears good but vocals are stronger in the left channel with the vocals in the right channel quieter and with a distinct echo.... Any ideas? I've switched the tubes with out success as the problem stays the same. Otherwise it's a very...

    Starving Student PCB's

Thanks for the help. I'll report back once done. Another thing, due to the case design, I am not soldering the tube sockets directly to the pcb. Is this an issue? Is it preferable to bunch all 9 socket wires together, spread them out or twist certain ones together? I just want to eliminate any...

    Starving Student PCB's

Got it all hooked up on the workbench, powered it up, no smoke or sparks so that was a bonus. I plugged in some cheap earhones, hooked up my Fiio X3 and voila!! Tube magic!!! The tubes glow a nice even healthy orange and the mosfets heat up very well. When nothing is playing or the music is...

    Starving Student PCB's

I have finally gotten round to building my amp (can't move due to being thrown off my dirt bike..) I am wondering if anyone has fitted a couple of VU meters to each channel? I like the look of them working and they would suit the theme of the amp I'm building.. Problem is I don't know where to...

    Starving Student PCB's

Hi all, I am wanting to build this nice little amp and I was wondering if the PCB is still available? If not, is the drawing for it available so I can etch my own? I have made PCB's before, just need the drawing... Thanks in advance. ANDY in NZ
