I owned one of these and felt that the sound is lacking so I gave it to a friend. Later I read that the output impedance of this thing is too high thus the bass roll-off. You may find this interesting if you want to open the thing and fiddle around a bit more

I don't think I have seen the original Benjie firmware file. You can use AGPTek firmware without rockbox support if you don't want rockbox anymore. Its usability is actually better than Benjie original

Just play around the settings and customise to your needs. You may experience some bugs though. Mine is toast so I can't comment on what bugs still exist

Yes, read my older post for modded firmware. However, consider your purchase carefully. Benjie does not control quality very well, mine came with improperly soldered headphone jack and upon resolder attempt the pads came off with the jack. They also use lots of glue
