An exploration of Chord DAVE, MScaler, Qutest, and Holo May, HQPlayer
A few weeks ago @llamaluv brought over his Dave so we could compare my Holo May KTE. Both were connected to my custom server which has a JCAT USB XE card with two USB connections. A SRC sat between the computer and the Dave. Each dac was fed with 16 full scale HQPlayer upsampled files via...- WilliamWykeham

DENAFRIPS Terminator: the King of R2R dac
Turns out my USB card needed more time to burn in. I still like the coax connection but it can get fatiguing. USB is another level in SQ, especially from something like JCAT.- WilliamWykeham

DENAFRIPS Terminator: the King of R2R dac
I am wondering whether anyone else notices that the coax and USB inputs into the Terminator sound crazy different. Coax, I get this brighter, more coherent sound that I really like especially for classical. USB, it's darker, can be bland with certain genres. I find myself very much preferring...- WilliamWykeham

Has anyone been able to get the dual AES input to work with the firmware update? Particularly if you have a non-mscaler input. With my mscaler I can now get only only one channel to work up to 3xxkhz upsampling, and can’t get anything out of 7xx upscaling. Strange that only one channel is working.- WilliamWykeham

My mscaler stopped working with the Terminator right after I downloaded the most recent firmware update. Hopefully somewhere down the line they will work together again.- WilliamWykeham

I just received some Boomslang digital cables - unfortunately I can’t get them to work with the mscaler and Terminator. Stock monoprice works fine, as does my friend’s $300 set of cables. Just something incompatible about these.- WilliamWykeham

Raal Ribbon Headphones - SRH1A
Taking a break from the land of Weldenheim, I've got an update on AHB2 impressions. @llamaluv and I combined forces this weekend for a deep dive comparison of bridged mono vs single amp. I had hoped to hear dual mono sounding just the same as a single AHB2. This hobby -- the endless upgrades...- WilliamWykeham

Selling my Triton Audio Cables headphone cable for the SR1a - originally $469. Any takers at $300? This is a 4-wire, silver cable. Selling because I have another nonstock cable I use more frequently. Neotech 24AWG silver wire for SR1a headphone, 6ft length.-25 linear feet. Furutech...- WilliamWykeham

The only way it works is using dual BNC coax cable from the mscaler into the AES input of the terminator. Search for these adapters on Amazon for the BNC cable: Neutrik NADITBNC-MX 75 Ohm BNC F To 110 Ohm XLR M Adapter- WilliamWykeham

DENAFRIPS Terminator: the King of R2R dac
The mscaler with the Terminator was phenomenal (thanks @llamaluv and thanks to @Saleh84 for discovering its compatibility). To my knowledge this is the only dac other than Chord's which can accept the full, 1 million tap potential of the mscaler. And boy does it deliver. Classical and jazz...- WilliamWykeham

DENAFRIPS Terminator: the King of R2R dac
Update: I blind tested myself and got 10/10 correct discerning OS from NOS. I was able to tell immediately. I prefer NOS with pop music and OS with classical / acoustic. I have a super resolving system of dac direct to amp and sra1. I still couldn’t notice a difference between the filters...- WilliamWykeham

I tried pressing the mode button but didn’t notice any difference. My hearing drops off at 13khz so I might not be able to tell.- WilliamWykeham

DENAFRIPS Terminator: the King of R2R dac
I'm about 3 hours into the new DSP board. Instruments sound much, much more clearly defined and separated, and I'd say that's the biggest and most apparent change for me. I'm also hearing much improved depth, more of a three dimensional, in-the-room type of sound. For some tracks, this is a...- WilliamWykeham

Raal Ribbon Headphones - SRH1A
Hmm.. this comment spurred me to go back to what I had been reading only to find several statements online that the real issue is using an analog xlr to transmit a digital signal, and that it should be ok to use a digital cable to transmit an analog signal, as long as magnetic interference isn’t...- WilliamWykeham

MY GOOF - I did not understand the difference between AES EBU and XLR and was using a digital cable with the preamp. That’s why it sounded terrible. Live and learn. Will amend or preface prior posts on this topic. Also you need to set boost to 10 dB with a consumer dac’s xlr and I didn’t...- WilliamWykeham

According to their manual, input voltage at unity gain is +24 dbu via balanced so about 12vrms. However my Terminator xlr output is 4 volts; maybe that’s where the issue is? I’ll see if unbalanced is better; LA4’s input is 2vrms.- WilliamWykeham

I am actually using digital volume control through Roon with “Device” selected - not sure if the actual modulation is being done in my ISO Regen, Singxer SU6, or Denafrips Terminator, which does not have built-in volume control. The interesting thing is that when I select a high dynamic range...- WilliamWykeham

A cautionary tale for those using an AHB2 who may be thinking about adding an LA4 or HPA4 - I had been looking for a preamp to move away from digital volume control and to incorporate my turntable back into my system, and naturally tried a Benchmark preamp, the LA4. Unfortunately in my system...- WilliamWykeham

Yes I use a SU-6 with the Terminator and consider it essential; i2s is brighter than other inputs but more provides better soundstage and may be slightly more resolving into my AHB2.- WilliamWykeham

This. 100%. When I placed my ifi ican pro in the chain, I found it challenging if not impossible to notice differences between my two dacs while doing instant back-and-forth A/Bing. With the preamp removed, the Pavane and Terminator sounded quite different. I'd love to do some blind testing...- WilliamWykeham

Just received my Triton Audio Neotech silver headphone cable, same as @llamaluv's but 4-wire instead of 8. My initial favorable impression has been reconfirmed: this is a significant upgrade in performance. Even better detail and transparency; wider soundstage. My preference is to listen at what are likely below-average volumes, for a few reasons - I've already got mild tinnitus in my mid-30s and hearing loss runs in the family. I get so much pleasure from music, and want to enjoy this hobby well into an advanced age. What I've found is that at low...- WilliamWykeham
