Comment by 'Balisarda' on listing 'Fostex T50RP excellent condition'

I think this is the Mk2; I know it's not a Mk3. There's a review somewhere comparing the Mk2 and Mk3, but I can't find it at this time. As I recall, there were some minor differences in sound but nothing really significant.

Available for purchase is one Berkeley Alpha DAC in excellent condition. I list it as good only because there's a small cosmetic blemish on the top panel, but the rest is excellent, and the DAC is fully functional. This is the first-generation model, $5,000 when bought new. I still haven't heard...

Available for purchase is one pair of AKG K 601 headphones. These appear entirely unused. My son must have bought them some time ago and forgotten about them. (Argh!) Anyway, we found them while packing for a move and would like to sell them. Buyer pays for shipping and insurance (if desired).

Just listened to some Fostex T50RPs today... WOW!

I recently received my T50RP and REALLY like them! First, these are extraordinarily neutral transducers--so much so that I now find my HD 650 colored. Second, I also find myself more aware of the beautiful purity of the sound of instruments and voices. Finally, I feel a stronger emotional...

Comment by 'Balisarda' in article 'Grado Pad Choices And Mods'

Excellent article, and much needed given all the options available! Would the OP consider adding maze400's comments regarding the effects of G pads to his article? (Or his own impressions?)

Comment by 'Balisarda' in article 'Grado Modification Overview'

What an illuminating graph! I'm astonished to see the bottom-of-the-line SR60 has the most neutral frequency response! (And MUCH more bass response than any of its cousins.)

But it's an informative comment! Unless it includes frequency-response graphs and such, all reviews are subjective.

Anyone manufacture angled earpads for Sennheiser HD 650?

Does anyone manufacture replacement earpads for the Sennheiser HD 650 that are thicker at the back than they are at the front? The headphones themselves have enough play for this to work comfortably, and I have a sneaking suspicion it would enhance the sound.   Thank you, Eric

Impressions of Symphones Magnum compared to other headphones?

Hello all,   The Symphones Magnum headphones have piqued my interest, but I'd like to know more about how they sound before shelling out for both headphones and mod.   I've read Currawong's review and am making my way through the 112-page Symphones Magnum thread, but I would appreciate...

Toward Equal Loudness at Audible Pitches

“Neutral” is a word audiophiles throw around a lot, but one that’s hard to measure. One measure of neutrality might be reproducing audible pitches with equal loudness. I was curious whether my headphones—or, rather, my headphones and my hearing—were doing this. I played a tone sweep and heard...

    Cure for HD 800 treble?

Count me among those who have found the treble of the HD 800 too pronounced, but I wonder if this is a partial solution: I read somewhere that the HD 800 angles its drivers 15 degrees off parallel from the ears, to present sound as coming more from the front than from the sides--more like...

SEARCHING THE BEST COMBINATION OF 6SN7 FOR CARY 300SEI

I use 1940s Sylvania VT-231, too, and love them. The tubes have such a natural ease--no hardness or grain--that it blows me away. There's also plenty of extension on both ends and plenty of detail. I've tried numerous others, NOS and current production, and none have come close.

Hissing Sound with 0404 USB and T-Amp

I get hissing when I use interconnects that aren't well shielded. Blue Jeans Cables offers excellent cables (with great shielding) at very low prices. I've been extremely satisfied with every purchase I've made from them. Perhaps more importantly, I've always experienced vanishingly low noise...

what's the best way to rip a CD

As I understand it: First, choose a lossless encoding format. A lossy encoding format compacts the ripped file by throwing away certain information stored on the CD. Second, when ripping the CD, use a media player that offers error checking. That way, the media player will check the bits...

Ceteris paribus, different media players require different buffer settings

Thanks for your comments! I am using ASIO4ALL v2.8. I've corrected my original post. Your suggestion that foobar2000's greater buffer requirement is because it uses an ASIO plug-in sounds eminently reasonable. I was disheartened to learn that I'm not using native ASIO. Can you tell me...

Ceteris paribus, different media players require different buffer settings

    J. River Media Center appears to be a more-efficient player than fubar2000. On my laptop, Media Center requires only a third the buffer offset of foobar2000 for clean playback. Both Media Center 12.0.451 and fubar2000 0.9.5.1 are configured on my laptop. Both players are set to ASIO playback...

Weird random click in Echo Indigo

Hi there. I use the Echo Indigo DJ on my laptop. I play WMA Lossless files on J. River Media Center using the ASIO4ALL driver. The clicking sounds you describe may result from your buffer being too small. It's most likely NOT a damaged sound card. Using the (free) ASIO4ALL driver, I have...

Best sound card for S/PDIF ~ Or does it even matter?

S/PDIF output is digital. Any soundcard that outputs in S/PDIF will send out the same 1s and 0s. Audible differences in sound quality between digital sources probably result from differences in the accuracy of the clocks controlling the digital output. An inaccurate clock will introduce...

    In-ears vs Full-Size

I own an Etymotic ER-4S (in-ear) and a Sennheiser HD 650 (circumaural). In-ear 'phones provide a lot of isolation from outside noise. As a result, fine details are more readily noticeable at lower volumes. Circumaural 'phones give me a better sense of space. I'm not speaking of instrument...

Headphones heavily affect impressions of how upstream gear sounds?

This may not be news to anyone, but I've been quite struck by it lately. I recently switched from the Sennheiser HD 650 to the Etymotic ER-4S. (I'm in heaven, but that's a story for another thread in another forum.) Since making the switch, I've gone back to my two headphone amps and done...

    Make out or hook up?

Am I so out of touch with popular culture? I thought "make out" means to kiss and "hook up" means to have sex. I didn't think they're equivalents.

    **IEMs NEEDED**

I don't consider the ER-4S 'analytical' at all! 'Analytical' implies frigidity. The ER-4S certainly very accurate, with a well balanced reproduction of the audio spectrum and great detail throughout. But the ER-4S is also emotionally very stirring. For me, only the AKG K701 has come close...
