    The Stax Thread III

I really like Weldwood Contact Cement. It has a generous working time and you can remove it from the housing, if you wanted to put new pads on in the future. You do need some pressure while it sets and it takes a while to set-up (20 - 60 minutes). I have had great luck with it, though I have not...

What is Questyle's 'Current Mode Amplification'

Current mode amplification can achieve high slew rates (voltage and current change over a period of time). Think dialing down the time divisions on a scope and getting greater detail on the waveform. This gives greater detail in an amp. The legendary Mass Kobo 465, uses this along with a high...

HiFiman HE-500 (HE as in High End) Proving to be an enjoyable experience in listening.

Just to clarify, I meant the pads when used with the 500, not their headphones. ZMF makes some great stuff! I'm excited to hear the Caldera.

The ZMF pads were really bad on the HE500! They looked like they would work fine. I friend was loaning me his Atrium and I decided to try the pads from it. I'm glad I did not drop any money on them! I still can't get over how good the HE500 is! Simply addictive to listen to.

Thanks for the recommendation! :) I'll probably get the DCA Ether Angled to try. Lots of people seem to like these. I know you said you don't like fenestrated pads but honestly its hard to imagine anything will outperform these cheap generic Chinese large fenestrated pu leather pads. They really...

I think the Fuzzor mod is worth doing. The highs on mine are smooth as butter! Absolutely no etch, overextension or harshness, even when comparing against my EQ profile that I made.

I'll experiment with the angled pads. Mine are not angled but they sound absolutely fantastic.

Thanks for the info!!! I will definitely have some printed. I might use Shapeways to print and use a flexible rubber like material. The 3D printed mounts I have are fragile and I accidentally broke two of them. Luckily I have extras. These mounts are so handy!

Thanks! :) This was a big help! I'll definitely check out the Brainwavz pads. Those look very similar. I found some 110mm pu leather perforated pads on Ebay at matched my measurements and ordered them. I also purchased some mounts from China, as the 3d printed ones are delicate. Mine are 110mm...

Hi everyone! I just got a used pair of HE-500's. I can't get over how good these sound! I'm honestly still picking my jaw off the floor. Wow! :) Does anyone know what pads are on these? I want to pick up some extras, if they are still being made, as they sound amazing and are super comfortable...

RIP Thomas... Wow! I'm sitting down just trying to digest this and feel very shocked and sad about this news. When I discovered Tomas's amps, I was thrilled. As an amateur builder, I was so impressed by him. I was not skilled enough to build an amp of this caliber. His circuit design and...

I've had around 4 transactions were tubes were listed as new and got used ones. Most Ukrainian and Russian purchases I have made have made have been fine. Only 2 I really cared about, as most of the Russian tubes I've got have been super cheap. The two I fought was for some metal base MELZ 6n9s...

This test was to check for electrostatic or electromagnetic interference. You just put a strong magnet in the vicinity close to the tube. If there is a change in amplitude in the superimposed signal that is being heard or seen on the scope, you would know that this is caused by this type of...

    Oblivion | UltraSonic Studios

I probably overreacted since the tube your using is a signal tube and the heat would be much lower than a power tube. The magnet could cause problems due to it being hotter under the magnet. But since this tube already has problems and the bulb temperature would be low, I would not think this...

As others have stated I could be a ground-loop. Do you have any audio equipment on the same circuit? I have also had this problem before. I have been using this brand of isolation transformers to lift the ground for several years. They also are better than a power conditioners IMO and I notice a...

    Schiit Folkvangr - Impressions Thread

This is true! 6n6p has no real equivalent. 6h30pi is somewhat similar, but draws significantly more heater current if I remember correctly. That would be VERY bad for the transformer as these tubes take lots of heater current to lower output impedance.
