Loudspeakers vs headphones
Here's my $0.02. From a budget prospective, you can pick up a used receiver and speakers on craigslist for relatively cheap that can sound great if you know what you are looking for. I found a pair of JBL HLS810 and an old 100w Technics receiver that I got for a total of $140. It really...- compuryan

++ FULL-SIZE HEADPHONE RECOMMENDATIONS THREAD++ CLOSED: Please post a thread in the Introductions, Help and Advice forum
Adam - the m50, and ad700 are good, as are the HD380 and PXC450 if you can get them at a good price. I wouldn't recommend the 595 because they are open and will not block noise.- compuryan

Best High-End Amp for the Hd650
Quote: Yes, more or less. The four-board fully balanced beta 22 I heard had a little better separation/detail than the zana, but that may be because it was balanced. A standard two-channel beta 22 might be more on par with the zana. Can't really go wrong with either amplifier- compuryan

Best High-End Amp for the Hd650
Find a used Beta 22, you should easily be able to get a standard 2 channel or 2 channel with active ground for less than $2000. It outperforms everything near its price range IMO. I was dead set on tubes until I heard the Beta 22, which has an extremely detailed, yet warm and groovy sound. I...- compuryan

New Apple "EarPods" - Finally - Photos
I got my iPhone 5 tonight with the earpods. I have spent about 45 minutes and I must confess.... they are good!! Especially for the price. Worlds better than the old iBuds. A good value as a $30 set of headphones.- compuryan

how do quality pots behave at the low end?
Personally, I'd go for an RK27. The low end imbalance I experienced with it was gone well before the time I reached normal listening levels. It is a high quality product. The more expensive pots/stepped attenuators don't offer a significant improvement in sound quality IMO. I've heard several of...- compuryan

Custom Gaming Notebooks
I got my Sager NP8150 (Clevo P150HM) from Pro Star http://www.pro-star.com/ I was happy with their service and am blown away by the laptop. It kicks sooo much ass. They have newer versions now (P150EM) that have updated processors/graphics. As a side note, I got a Razer Orochi mouse and...- compuryan

Mouse -Fi
I use a Razer Orochi. It's perfect for me because I'm on the go a lot with my laptop and it is comfortable but not too bulky, yet it has a powerful 2000 dpi sensor. It can be a wired mouse OR a wireless mouse, so I can take advantages of both interfaces (wireless = convenience, wired = speed...- compuryan

Headphones around $300 or so
If you're planning on using an amplifier, I'd definitely say HD600 or HD580. I've heard them, the HD25-1 II, and D2000 through the same source/amp and for me the choice is clear... the soundstage you get with open headphones is absolutely worth it.- compuryan

Headphones for my girlfriend
ATH-M50 aren't too big, but maybe you should just get her a pair of DJ100 since she has already fallen in love with them? Oh and an electric (digital) piano is different than a keyboard in that it is mostly dedicated to accurately replicating the sound and feel of an actual piano, they...- compuryan

looking for balanced USB DAC/Preamplifier
1. Need a balanced USB DAC/Preamp to connect to a power amplifier. The DAC1 Pre is perfect, but out of my price range. 2. I'm considering the EMU 0404 USB Is it possible to connect a power amplifier DIRECTLY to the balanced outputs of the EMU 0404? I realize TRS > XLR cables...- compuryan

How do you shrink your heatshrink?
I inherited an old 230w craftsman soldering gun that gets so hot all I have to do it bring it near the heatshrink (never touching) and it shrinks in a matter of seconds. I think it was meant for plumbing or something lol. That being said, after reading this thread I think I am going to ask Santa...- compuryan

Cardas Solder- Tri vs. Quad Eutectic Roll Solder
They have similar silver content (3% for Quad Eutectic, 4% for Tri Eutectic), but the lead-free Tri Eutectic solder has more tin, which has a slightly lower resistance than lead. Even so, it would probably be very difficult to distinguish between the two solders. The main difference is...- compuryan
