Hugo M Scaler by Chord Electronics - The Official Thread
I think we have to assume it does. A friend with a Mojo 2 reports sound quality differences amongst three cables: KabelDirekt, Sys Concept and Supra ZAC (in ascending "sound quality"). It may be that Mojo 2 is more susceptible than other Chord DACs (or HMS). The well known streaming services...- Jawed

Another test you might like to try: Each of the pair of outputs on the back of HMS dedicated to DBNC mode is capable of outputting music on its own, with no cable connected to the other. So try this test: turn off HMS and TT2 (and the amplifier you have connected to TT2, if you use such an...- Jawed

I wonder, is the development of QMS benefitting from the Ultima DAC prototype? -

I'm guessing @Rob Watts didn't do a presentation at Singapore CanJam about his research findings in the development of Quartet M Scaler as there's been no mention that I can find... Oh well, maybe Munich is when we'll find out. -
Supercharging Chord Dave's internal amplifier
Maybe not directly relevant to your implementation, but I found these interesting and fun: The critical concept explored in the video is that the self-inductance of a capacitor is relevant to switching noise, so a physically smaller capacitor will have less inductance, and so works better to...- Jawed

It's occurred to me that this might also explain why some people report clicks or other loud noises when music changes sample rate. I think @Rob Watts reported an inability to reproduce this problem, so perhaps it's worth trying again with automatic input selection (and, obviously, with no...- Jawed

The old school approach is to cover the USB cable in ferrites, for what its worth. But these little devices that convert USB into optical are generally very compelling. Surely, someone has compared the sound quality of these little things. Surely...- Jawed

This is an extremely good point. Since Mojo 2 uses the EQ mechanism to effect volume control, it seems reasonable that Quarter M Scaler would implement volume control in the same manner. Honestly, though, I doubt Rob will implement any form of communication "over the wire" for either EQ or... -

I think many here would find lots of value in this discussion: https://parttimeaudiophile.com/2024/03/19/an-interview-with-peter-qvortrup-of-audio-note-uk/ The direct link to the audio is here: You don't need any kind of Apple stuff or account to listen. I find it particularly interesting... -

Thanks, so it seems like in Hugo M Scaler the decimation filter for 176.4KHz is less capable and there is no dedicated noise shaping for 4FS. I remember you saying how much work you've put into decimation for Davina and it seems like that work was all after HMS was launched. I suppose the... -
Watts Up...?
@Rob Watts With Hugo M Scaler, when fed 44.1KHz sample rate music, the output over TOSLINK is 176.4KHz and uses approximately 250,000 taps. When this output is being used, the dual-BNC output is still active, so dual-BNC gets 705.6KHz with ~1M taps. So how does the TOSLINK output get generated... -

Apparently lots of analogue talk by Rob at the recent New York CanJam: Digital Isn’t 3:00p to 4:00p Digital is digital, it's all ones and zeroes. Except that, no it isn't. Beyond the fundamentals of the digital-to-analogue conversion process, there are a host of additional factors that can... -

Is the PSU designed to support more than one external component simultaneously? e.g. could the PSU support the Quartet Scaler and a DAVE 2? -

Since that video was deleted, the replacement is: This is "editorialised" and I think some of what Rob said has been lost when compared with the original, but I'm not sure. Quartet Scaler: 5 FPGAs of the same type as in the Hugo M Scaler 4 million taps separate power supply high power... -

DAVE and the amplifier you're using to drive your speakers are subject to RF noise via their connection to the mains. One or both of these might be reacting to the presence of the mains connections you are using to power HMS. In my experience all power cables, AC and DC, benefit from ferrites...- Jawed

Is this a result published in an article? Just curious whether the connection scheme was described somewhere. USB? Optical? Was Mojo 2 running on battery power? Also wondering whether you used different devices to produce the three different graphs. Curious how reproducible your test is, e.g...- Jawed

CHORD ELECTRONICS DAVE
I'd never heard of "opamp rolling" until I watched this video: apparently it's been a thing for years now. It struck me that some DAVE modders might want to play with opamps :L3000:- Jawed

Chord Electronics TT3? Dave 2? Why is no one talking about this....
I reckon it's reasonable to presume that once Ultima DAC is launched a DAVE 2 would be next, as the new Choral Super Scaler needs a DAC of the same series that can actually keep up with it... Then it's a matter of how close CSS + DAVE 2 gets to Ultima DAC. This presumes that Ultima DAC has CSS...- Jawed

CHORD ELECTRONICS DAVE
Neutral is an earth connection, that's the problem... With ferrites on all AC and DC cables (HMS and DAVE and power amp) I found that HMS SMPS plugged in close to DAVE (and power amp) sounds better than further away. My theory is that this minimises the inevitable DC offset that HMS and DAVE's...- Jawed

Six buttons, each is a porthole... Last year I bought some iFi bits for my DAVE. I'm still very happy - I just don't notice any variation in my system... This is what I wrote back then. All of my power cables, AC or DC, are covered end to end in ferrites.- Jawed
