    Q701 impressions thread

The issue is with the Chinese manufacturing, the leather is not as nice, the plastic quality is lower, the actual molds themselves aren't set up properly, these driver issues, they just seem less refined. I owned K701s 7 years ago, and they were worlds better in quality. no bubbles in the...

They are, and I will be. It seems from elsewhere I have posted this is a common problem. Especially with the Chinese built AKG. The plastic molds have a lot more "flash", and the plastics aren't mixed properly, giving the inside an uneven appearance. With these being so common, not many...

    Q701 impressions thread

I just recieved my q701's in, and arent very impressed with the build quality at all compared to the k701's I had many years ago. These seem flimsy, the headband seems to be fake leather. And the worst thing is, I take the ear cups off to inspect the build quality, and my right driver has a...

Is that copper tape grounded to anything? If it isn't grounded, it cant block anything. I've done my own DIY EMI shields for soundcards before. Made a pad of electrical tape the same size as my soundcard, placed a same size sheet of thick aluminum foil over that, and then arranged pennies in...

    O2 AMP + ODAC

Does anybody know if the obective2 has been o-scope measured while connected to actual headphones? I'm wondering if it can maintain its tight specs while hooked up to the varying load of a headphone and their voicecoil. I'm thinking of picking up a kit or board to make a desktop version.

    PPA v2 construction discussion

Anybody know why the buffer bias reading would drop across one channel when hooked up to headphones without sound. The right and ground channel only vary from no load readings by 3mv. while the left channel drops about 20mv. With another set of headphones it is the opposite. Left and ground...

The Xonar Essence STX Q/A, tweaking, impressions thread

I've been building computers for over a decade and have never encountered any of those problems.   An ATX cable and ATX 12v cable are always required. So full modular has no advantage over semi modular here. A cable should never become faulty. They are physical equipment, they do not fail...

UPGRADING THE CRYSTAL (X0) ON ESSENCE STX

Anybody have the spec sheet for the stock crystal? I'm looking to keep something that fits the stock board. I think all of these clocks being run with such long runs of wire would introduce more problems then they would solve. As PCB's are designed to optimize layout, and having a few cm of...

AKG Q701 Austria made vs China with picture.

If the warning of lead just means they use leaded solder, that would be a good thing. Lead free solder isn't as reliable in electronics. Though a warranty reduction could be signs they build quality has dropped, or it could just be harmon trying to maximize profits, warranty services can be...

The Xonar Essence STX Q/A, tweaking, impressions thread

Well, can't say I've run into this problem with any of the modular power supplies I've owned. Though I stick to the Antec TruePower units, and they physically change the connectors, so that even if one is 2x3, or 2x4 pinouts, they physically can not be inserted into the connectors they are not...

    Philips Fidelio X2?!

Thanks for that, well it looks like they maybe too a few design ideas from Grado, and a few others, to produce what seems like the headphone Grado should have been making years ago. Really interested in trying to grab a pair.

Trying to hear the difference between 320 mp3 vs flac (16/24-bit, 44.1/88.2)

Music Alchemist, I've already said my proposed testing isn't an actual ABX testing. You seem to be so obsessed with the term ABX to realize there is other, often more accurate testing methods. You seem to act as if the ABX is the end all be all of testing. If you took 15 seconds to actually...

Trying to hear the difference between 320 mp3 vs flac (16/24-bit, 44.1/88.2)

The current tests for ABX on here though ask which people prefer. Some people may prefer lower bitrate recording if it "smooths" out the sound. Just like how many people prefer coloured sounding gear and phones. So when you pose it as an ABX and ask which do people think sounds better, you...

Does anyone know the OEM for the X2 drivers? The design of these look very similar to a improved Grado. Anyone know of any link between Grado and these? The drivers also look near identical. http://assets.head-fi.org/a/a0/1000x500px-LL-a0f5b695_planets.jpg...

Trying to hear the difference between 320 mp3 vs flac (16/24-bit, 44.1/88.2)

I don't think you understand the testing I am talking about. The test is to use FLAC as a reference, a known control sample, and then two blind samples, one 128, one 320. The goal of the test would be to pick the blind sample that is the closest match to the known reference FLAC sample...

The Xonar Essence STX Q/A, tweaking, impressions thread

You're card is dead most likely. The STX draws both 12v and 5v from the molex connector. You connected your molex connector to a header for PCI-E video cards, they ONLY output 12v. So your STX likely received 12v through sections designed for 5v. Over twice the designed voltage. It is...

Trying to hear the difference between 320 mp3 vs flac (16/24-bit, 44.1/88.2)

There is one on this forum. Though it is the 3-way blind one I spoke of which I feel is flawed. I would create one, though I am not sure how to go about hosting it, converting files so they appear the same size. I would have three test clips. Ideally music recorded well, with low drum...

Trying to hear the difference between 320 mp3 vs flac (16/24-bit, 44.1/88.2)

I've actually found replacing old 128, 160, and 192KBps songs with 320 or FLAC to be the easiest upgrade in sound quality. Also, something I've noticed, is that some sound tests people actually end up preferring lower quality files, as it seems to remove some slight details that can be...

Trying to hear the difference between 320 mp3 vs flac (16/24-bit, 44.1/88.2)

You are saying the difference between 128. 320, and FLAC is small? 128kbps sounds like pure trash. Instantly noticeable in almost any complex song. Between flac and 320, The difference is small to none depending on the song and equipment used.

I'd still say sound cards do a better job then most dedicated DACs. The measurements for them are often much better.

    Are these MS-1's even salvagable?

Pretty much the only hope, if the drivers are okay, is to transplant the drivers into a totally new body. Possibly from a dead set of grado's, or another cheap model of something. I'm sure people will have dead grados. I know I killed a pair a few years back.
