Schiit Happened: The Story of the World's Most Improbable Start-Up

"How do you explain to someone that a 20W amp costs more than your 100W amp? Even though it’s in the same basic packaging, differences in the chassis and feature set would put if about $100 more than a Vidar." With something that makes it different enough to consumers that they can justify the...

What a long, strange trip it's been -- (Robert Hunter)

Good point, Gungnir has more advantages than just being a balanced Bifrost even. All things considered Gungnir seems like a hell of a value.

He reported different results than previous measurements on the Soekris DAC too. Amir does not know how to take proper measurements, document a test setup, or understand his own data. I would not take anything seriously from that hack.

I completely agree about the speakers.

What a long, strange trip it's been -- (Robert Hunter)

I tried multiple times to give Amir clear suggestions on how to improve his documentation. He posted a thread that was better than nothing but not the level of documentation that atomicbob offered and that was not overwhelming people with documentation, just enough to explain what he had done...

What a long, strange trip it's been -- (Robert Hunter)

That was me talking about what I would do if I got the equivalent documentation for a calibration of my work equipment. Sorry if that was unclear. I had already had a lot of back and forth with Amir about documentation that started here on head-fi and extended to his forum. In my line of work...

What a long, strange trip it's been -- (Robert Hunter)

Yeah I tried to talk with Amir over on that forum being as kind and agreeable as I know how to be. My experience was that Amir and some of the followers over there get very defensive over someone asking questions. I would have expected a "science" based forum to appreciate an EE who works in...

Schiit Happened: The Story of the World's Most Improbable Start-Up

Sure, fair point. There is a big variation of Engineers experience and project types. Some Engineers do a better job than others of considering compliance regulations (Safety/Environmental/EMC) with their design choices as well. There is a lot to consider for a successful project.

I suspect that you are right. I have a calibrated mic that I can use to check level later. Being that I am testing with Quads it is always easier (emotionally) to turn the volume down than up.

Schiit Happened: The Story of the World's Most Improbable Start-Up

Some more on the Freya with LISST devices (there might be a better place to post about this, sorry); It is hard to compare Passive or J-FET mode directly to the LISST "tube" mode because of volume difference and my lack of confidence that I am matching just right but despite my confusion (I am...

What a long, strange trip it's been -- (Robert Hunter)

Thanks for the credentials again. I am an EE who works in test and measurement for a living in Beaverton Oregon. I am not really impressed by either of our credentials though. You know what impresses me? Documentation, in one simple place easy for people to review. Equipment used...

Schiit Happened: The Story of the World's Most Improbable Start-Up

Not a bad idea, maybe different color LEDs even. Green tubes, I think that color is taken. Maybe other colors though. I like the solid state option but may try some Tung-Sol tubes at some point.

The Freya with the LISST devices sounds great. They get really hot so I do wonder what the gain devices inside are. To my ears no clarity is lost between passive and "tube" mode using the LISST devices. Here are some pictures of my setup and the Freya with the LISST devices installed.

Will do. Unfortunately my main 2 chan setup is in a room that is not optimal because the floor was squeaking and vibrating too much in my larger listening room and I need to rebuild the floor to be more solid and stable. Current setup in a small room.

I just got the new LISST devices. Here are some pictures in case others want to see what they look like.

Yes and this is why information on the test setup is important. The equipment under test could be broken or the test setup could have a problem. Every time I ask I am told that it has already been discussed but I don't get any further details nor do I find sufficient documentation from the...

It is not like it would be hard to satisfy me on this documentation thing. Here is the associated equipment, here are the calibration dates, here is a beautiful looking noise floor test just in case, here are some pictures of the test setup, here is the data, thank you for reading.

I don't own a Bifrost and never have so I can't answer if I like it or not. I work in test and measurement and it gets my attention that you do not document your setup and calibration well to go along with your presented data.

What a long, strange trip it's been -- (Robert Hunter)

I work in test and measurement and find your lack of documentation about your setup to take away the usefulness of your presented data. Please document your setup and calibration details if you want your data to be useful. The audio stuff is outside of my field but common sense should tell you...

What a long, strange trip it's been -- (Robert Hunter)

Amir is the one who does not understand. When taking measurements it is very important to have the details of the test setup documented (pictures are very helpful for repeatability as well!) and to take measurements that are relevant to the usage of the product being measured.

Schiit Happened: The Story of the World's Most Improbable Start-Up

I must admit that talking about microvolts of output from a DAC in the thread of someone who does not design DACs is way off topic. Even more off topic and a bit irritating when the persons setup and test conditions are mostly unknown and they use stock photos off the internet for the product...

Schiit Happened: The Story of the World's Most Improbable Start-Up

It is one thing to own test and measurement equipment, it is another to properly interpret what the data means in context to how it is used.
