Photo section has been corrupted -- you can help.

During a software upgrade, I managed to kill the photo-post database, as well as the backup that I made just minutes previous. So, rather than busting out into self-deprecating humor, how about this.. If you had an album on the photo section, send me TWO (what you think are) UNIQUE file names...

Brad Mehldau on NPRs Day to Day

NPR's Noah Adams joins NPR's Alex Chadwick in an interview with jazz pianist Brad Mehldau. They talk about Mehldau's rendition of "River Man" on his latest CD, a solo effort entitled Live in Tokyo. The song was originally written by vocalist Nick Drake, and Mehldau explains how he translates a...

Mozilla problems -- we're on them.

There are some style issues with Mozilla. Some buttons are not coming up (i.e. reply/post). If you're reading this and you're a Mozilla user that cannot post -- this is a fantastic time to practice self reflection.. peer into your inner self.. post questions to your soul, rather than on the...

    Just performing some updates.

Ladies and gents, we're just doing some maintenance. One might wonder why we do such things during prime time when hundreds of users are on -- well, that's the best time to see how you're all torturing the database, and thus, we can be more effective at finding out what in the heck is going on.

    Fixing the problems.

Search index issues are popping up. So, search is off. Admins, even if you have access to search, don't use it. I'll be tearin' up the index for a while.

Routing audio through my house - power lines?

Hey everyone. I am looking for a really easy way to route audio through my house. My neighbor has his whole house wired so that he can broadcast his computer-juke-box to several rooms. I'd like to do the same thing -- but cheap and with some decent sound quality. Is it possible to route...

    Internet routing problems.

Looks like there is either a major router down or there's some type of DoS attack going on because traffic routes between our datacenters are going up and down by the minute. So, if you can get in at one moment and not the next, you're just a victim of router circumstance. We've corroborated...

Measuring AMPS on a live circuit.

In one of my clusters, I have two 15 amp AC circuits running about 25 servers and some additional storage appliances. I'm looking into some nice power strips/units that have amp meters built into them (neat little LED display), but for now, I'd like to get a reading on how many amps I'm...

    Rediscovering Rush - Hemispheres.

Since I've been having a chance to listen to a ton of different amps/cables up here @ the office lately, I've been pulling out the old CDs that I know well but haven't listened to in a while. Rush - Hemispheres is one of them I'm listening to now. Just fantastic drumming, fantastic bass lines...

    Royal Shakespeare Company: Coriolanus

Yesterday evening my wife and I went to the University of Michigan's Power Center to watch the University Musical Society's special presentation of the Royal Shakespeare Company performing Coriolanus. This was Shakespeare's last Roman tragedy. Lets begin by saying that I have not attended a...

Roy Jones, Jr. - Heavy Weight Champ!

Anybody watch the Roy Jones vs. Ruiz fight last night on PPV? Man alive -- great fight. I mean, it was no super-duper slug fest, but man, did Roy Jones dissect Ruiz. I mean, heck, he had Ruiz second guessing himself by the third round. The predictions in the house ranged from extreme (me)...

    Hold music @ your office.

Well, the other day, I looked at our phone system and saw that we have a MOH input jack. I'm like, "MOH.. hmm.. moh? Modular Optical Handoff? Holy crap, Music on Hold!" So, I plugged in a Walkman, logged into the phone system admin interface, activated it, and we're rockin'. At first, I put...

    Code monkeys, reveal yourselves.

Do you code for a living? Do you code just for fun? If you program at all, I want to hear about it. I want to hear about the programming languages in which you are proficient, which ones you want to learn or are learning now, who you work for and what kind of stuff you're working on. I code...

IT geeks help - ever deploy a reverse proxy?

We were lucky enough to run into a swinging deal on a nice proxy/accelerator appliance (CacheFlow 3000 series) on the cheap. Just wondering if anyone out there has experience in configuring reverse proxies on routers/firewalls (to sit in front of a web farm to help alleviate server utilization)...

Lord of the Rings - Two Towers

Well, there's a goofy thread started re: some other link; however, I thought I'd talk about the real deal holyfield. Just FYI, I saw LOTR Fellowship for the first time last weekend. My wife and I haven't watched it yet, and we wanted to be ready for the second one that comes out on December...

Maktub - one bad ass band!

I was listening to NPR Morning News (linked to article - its segment #14 -- just fast-forward to the end -- you'll have to do it 13 times), and they featured a band called Maktub. They're a Seattle-based band with some serious soul, from drums, bass, guitar, and of course, the lead singers...

Windows Trick: Anyone know how to rearrange taskbar icons?

I have Windows 2000, and often, while I'm working, I have about 20 to 25 tasks/windows open. The taskbar at the bottom doesn't allow me to shuffle them around. Does anyone know any way to do this, or a program that can manipulate the order of these windows? They're currently sorted...

What kind of 'big thread' reader are you?

Just wondering -- sometimes, when I see a huge thread, I kinda shy away from it because I think of how long it would take to read all of the posts. That would be the lazy-person style. But sometimes, I read the first post, then warp over to the last page of posts -- I call that the Clif-Notes...

    Any Liz Phair fans?

I've always dug on Liz Phair's stuff. Just recently, I popped in Whip-Smart and fell in love all over again. This album came out 1994 -- man, seems just like yesterday when I picked it up. Anyhow, just wondering who else digs on her stuff, which tracks you like particularly, etc. I just dig...

IUMA hunting (independent underground music archive)

Well, I decided to do a little IUMA (underground music archive) hunting. You know, find some unsigned artists and listen to their stuff. Problem is, it's tough when you just playing point-and-click Russian roulette -- especially when you get hit with a couple .44 mag bullets like this guy...
