Dubstep Girl's Massive 5AR4/5R4/5U4G Rectifier Review/Comparison! (Rectifer Tube Rolling thread)

I have both the WZ34 (17V drop) and WU4GB (50V drop) Copper Cap Rectifiers on the WA6SE (same idea for WA22) -- they both work fine after several hours of testing. The amplifier does not run hot. The WZ34 is, as expected, much crisper with less sag. WU4GB is looser. They both are very solid...

    Schiit Yggdrasil Impressions thread

Hey guys, I am well familiar with the technicalities of the two, but just want to get an opinion since I haven't heard the Yggy. I am currently using a slightly modified Gungnir Multibit with USB2, with an Uptone Regen on a linear power supply. I also just have some simple mods like ISODAMP on...

Woo Audio WA6 + WA6SE: Tubes, Comments, Pictures, and Advice

You can use either. Measured impedance at the source for low on the WA6SE is 15 Ohm and the high impedance is 50 Ohm. Your headphones are pretty efficient at 104db/mW so you shouldn't have an issue with either jack. See which one is quieter and allows you good volume control.

It's supposed to get hot - that's not an issue. The recommendation is to leave it on constantly. The Analog Devices chips they use for the DAC's (not designed for audio by custom) work best at higher temperatures. The left side would be warmer because that's where the power supply section is.

    Fostex TH900 MkII

I've been a Fostex TH600 and then 900 owner since they basically came out. Love my heavily modded TH900's.    http://www.head-fi.org/t/595683/fostex-th900-impressions-discussion-thread/12570#post_12364700   That was back in Feb when I just got the EQP-WA (yes, the hardware tube ones with...

    The Stax Thread III

While I get your point, I think that's half the fun (if not more) with these things....we're not dealing with magnets anymore but a very simple principle (rudimentary, even) yet the fun is in the power to make unique amplifiers that push the bounds of power and allow an almost infinite amount...

    Schiit Yggdrasil Impressions thread

It can't clean up the jitter completely, but if the source cannot lock to the VCXO then it'll at least lock to the VCO, which will provide a pretty good master clock. Not nearly as precise as the extremely narrow VCXO, but at least it is locking to something (the VCO). That'll give it a good...

    The Stax Thread III

I talked to Kevin and Birgir a few hours ago and they once again told me what I had thought. I am not going to quote what they told me in public completely as it wasn't related to the whole KGDT vs. KGST thing :P. But "As for the KGDT, it is the same circuit as the KGST just run at lower current...

    The Stax Thread III

I believe he started to use Alpha potentiometers as he said they perform better in his testing for all his amplifier builds (read that on Head-Case) going back to at least the beginning of this year.

    The Stax Thread III

The GES from Woo has/had a potential issue with the bias supply ballast resistor where it was incorrectly done or just not there in some of the older models at least, so over time your Stax headphone diaphragm would be in danger of destruction to put it nicely... Birgir fixed the issue and...

    The Stax Thread III

Probably. Been awake longer than I should working so excuse my defensive language, lol.     And yeah the reason this is just coming up is simple price....sure if price is no object go for it. I am not forcing anyone to do anything here. Just trying to justify my price. And forgetting about...

    The Stax Thread III

Glad you liked it! I'm allowed to speak my experience, correct some information if it becomes relevant, and it indeed becomes relevant when someone puts off work from an otherwise very reputable group that you would agree with no problem - just because not many people here talk about it and so...

    The Stax Thread III

I explained why it's not that popular. KG/Birgir @ Mjolnir-Audio who makes the amps doesn't have unlimited time. He sells what he has in stock...I've talked to him about it when I purchased the amplifier (KGDT). The KGST was in active production and the KGDT was drawn up by Kevin Gilmore and...

    The Stax Thread III

Yes, I asked Birgir about this specifically when looking at the datasheet (the 400V on the ECC99) and when designing the KGDT they decided that this was the best/maximum voltage (300V on the B+ with -300V bias for 600Vpp and ~370Vrms) to go with in order to keep the amplifier smoothly running...

    The Stax Thread III

Back when I purchased the amp, I did ask Birgir what the swing voltage was via. e-mail and this was his reply -    (I was asking about his opinion on the 007MK1 vs MK2 with the KGDT)     as well as the B+ voltage of 300V and a bias of -300V for 600Vpp.

    The Stax Thread III

Yeah, I used the ECC99 Gold Pin and they are pushed almost to the maximum (safely of course) at +300V with -300V bias, so 600V peak-to-peak which is quite a lot from the tubes, but the amplifier is quiet and there is absolutely no noise floor. And unlike some of the Stax amplifiers, that...

    The Stax Thread III

I am the one selling my KGDT because I am moving and don't have the space, but it is a great amplifier with the quality you expect from the KG & Mjolnir-Audio designs. It is very close to the KGST in terms of sound. Here's some information right from Birgir @ Mjolnir-Audio:

    Fostex TH900 MkII

I have never heard the LCD-XC, only the LCD-2, LCD-3 (both open) and EL-8C from Audeze so I can only comment with data.   From stock TH900 to the mods I described, a big difference. This is to be expected though. The TH900 is a dynamic headphone, just your "standard" 50mm moving coil dynamic...

    Fostex TH900 MkII

Sort of, yes. They are extremely hybrid - which gives them a good benefit in the sense that you get the wide soundstage that you get from open headphones with some isolation.   For technical stats - the measurements for broadband isolation from reference (100Hz - 10kHz, 0 dB reference)...

Fostex TH900 Impressions & Discussion Thread

I have had the TH-900 (with cabling I did myself, custom wood cups and angle pads from Lawton Audio) and using the WA6-SE amplifier with the USAF 596 "Mighty" rectifier -- awesome combo already. I recently got two Warm Audio EQP-WA for my studio - also have a Goldpoint 47 step attenuator SA2X so...

Woo Audio WA6 + WA6SE: Tubes, Comments, Pictures, and Advice

Do any WA6-SE owners have experience pairing this with the HE-1000's? This headphone is hard to drive; I'm sure the WA6-SE can handle it theoretically (theoretical peak SPL about 120 dB when doing the calculations) as the power specs of this are    800 mW at 600 Ω 1,300 mW at 300 Ω 1,800 mW...
