I would go with the JB980 too and only records in the SP mode. The main detail loss in transfer CD to MD to me is the soundstage, less wide or full than the original CD recording. The higher SNR will Minimize the loss.

The EQ setting is in the unit. You can adjust the EQ direct on a recorder or the remote. A MD player has fewer bottoms, so it is mostly adjust on the remote.
