Long awaited Smyth SVS Realiser NOW AVAILABLE FOR PURCHASE
Quote: What are the dominant factors you have found to produce the most consistently + accurate emulation results? I guess symmetry would be one. I think I get better results with deeper mic locations too. Would like to hear your take on this.- YCH

Long awaited Smyth SVS Realiser NOW AVAILABLE FOR PURCHASE
Quote: Ok; I notice that the accuracy of the emulation is very dependent on the mic fittings, and despite me having done it almost a dozen times myself now I still don't have it down to a science. I'm going to ask Lorr to give me some pointers on that in person, hence the LA locations...- YCH

Long awaited Smyth SVS Realiser NOW AVAILABLE FOR PURCHASE
I've been away for almost a year...was supposed to go to AIX and Mi Casa but apparently Mi Casa is no longer an option. AIX is still an option, so that's good. Anyone have suggestions for good studios/locations to visit in the LA area?- YCH

Long awaited Smyth SVS Realiser NOW AVAILABLE FOR PURCHASE
Quote: That's because there's an important distinction between loudspeakers and headphones, even for as simple a thing as achieving a flat frequency response! Let's examine that. For example, if person A set up a room with a particular set of loudspeakers and tuned it til it's...- YCH

Quote: Do you agree that the ideal headphone design would be one that was designed specifically for an individual? If so, then dummy head based design is by definition flawed, since it will not match everyone. It is a necessary evil of making a one-size-fits-all product like headphones...- YCH

Quote: I have a fundamental disagreement with the point-of-view that any audible changes to the headphone audio path must be bad, because the underlying implication is that the original audio path cannot be improved in any way. See my posts above about calibration for more details.- YCH

Quote: Do your own PRIRs sound like the loudspeaker system/room you were measuring from the seating position in which you measured it? If it does that well, then that's mission accomplished from the Realiser's point of view.- YCH

Long awaited Smyth SVS Realiser NOW AVAILABLE FOR PURCHASE
The tech behind the Realiser is very sound (heh). One way to think about it, away from the nitty gritty of it is this: If you believe in TV color calibration, then the approach to the Realiser is fundamentally similar. It's trying to calibrate the system to a certain reference. Most HDTV...- YCH

Long awaited Smyth SVS Realiser NOW AVAILABLE FOR PURCHASE
Quote: I think one reason some of the headphiles don't take well to the Realiser is that it involves tons of DSP processing to the audio signal. To some, having any DSP processing corrupts and makes the signal less pure, and necessarily reduce quality, so they ignore it.- YCH

Loudspeakers vs headphones
Quote: Interesting read sort of, but this part is quite wrong: Quote: Mathematically impossible. Dither has to be added pre-quantization in order to yield signal-to-noise perceptual benefits ie "hearing further into the music". Otherwise it just means the...- YCH

Loudspeakers vs headphones
Everything being equal I'd prefer a nice room and speakers. But I don't have the time and money to really sink into a dedicated room and equipment. But good headphones + a good virtualizer is a great option. Headphones only I don't enjoy as much.- YCH

Smyth SVS Realiser - PRIR Exchange Thread
darinf, Apologies if the answer is obvious somewhere, but where are you guys going to for the PRIR measurements? I'd been making arrangements to go AIX and Mi Casa with Lorr, but Mi Casa has been hard to get lately, so I've been shelving my plans. If you guys are going to AIX and several...- YCH

How well do these Stax volume/power combo knobs hold up?
I only have the entry level Stax SR-2170 set (bundles the SR-207 headphone and SRM-252S) that came with my Realiser, and the thing about the SRM-252S is that it has one of those icky combo power/volume knobs. In other words, to turn the unit off, I have to turn it all the way down until it...- YCH

Smyth SVS Realiser - PRIR Exchange Thread
Quote: I'm told (info from Lorr Kramer) that the pair of microphones that come with the Realiser are fairly pricey - $300 a pair. They apparently have them custom made and each pair are matched to within 1dB of each other. Although I haven't measured their performance (I have access to...- YCH

Long awaited Smyth SVS Realiser NOW AVAILABLE FOR PURCHASE
Okay, I noticed an apparent downside to using the LsRs speaker cloning. Since I only have a 2 channel system, I use the LsRs speaker cloning to get myself a 5.0 speaker system. Thing is, the virtual center channel always sounded off-center but I didn't too much about it. After some...- YCH

Quote: That didn't work for me. I erase a preset before I do any measurements, then load that "empty" preset and do the measurements. Then load the PRIR and HPEQ into the empty preset. Now I just erased the preset once more and reloaded the PRIR and HPEQ, but still the same problem.- YCH

Quote: You should look at the nav bar to the right of the screen and pick the 09/16/2012 meeting video. It starts off without sound but eventually some kind of Bach organ track plays then eventually 8 minutes into the video the meeting starts. No idea what's the deal with that, but oh well.- YCH

Quote: Yup about the only glaring error is that the impulse response of the PRIR in the Realiser A8 maxes out at 0.85 seconds, not 5 seconds. Still, a pretty good presentation overall. EDIT: Hefty guy in the blue shirt talks too much for the little knowledge he has. Annoying.- YCH
