External CD/DVD drive for computer: quiet, good build quality, multi-use?
Boy it's been a long time!..but I find myself with a question this board is uniquely qualified to answer: I built an entertainment computer w/o a CD/DVD drive bay thinking I could just add an external drive. Problem is, the ASUS external drive I bought is louder than bombs and vibrates like...- Traddad

Shorter Cable for Senn HD 15-SP II
I have a set of Senn HD 15-SP II cans that I work out with and the cable is ungodly long. Can anyone recommend a cable with a 90 degree plug and less than 1.5m long? Also..the leads to the ear cups have to be the same length, as this model doesn't have the single side routing like the real HD...- Traddad

Distortion: Static ringing? Do I need a new amp?
OK, Looooong time since I've posted, but I thought of this forum first when I needed help: I have started to get a horrible static ringing in my home speakers that seems to be intermittent and pretty random but mostly associated with louder/more syncopated vocals/music. What I have: A nice old...- Traddad

Internal Audio Card Choices Other Than Xonar Essence?
I'm in "final shopping mode"...most of the entertainment computer is on the way, but I need to to get a good (enough) audio card with at least 5.1 SPDIF/Toslink out to my AV receiver and RCA (or good other) analog out to my stereo amp. Headphones not needed...My ears can no longer take them...- Traddad

A / V, "Entertainment" Computer?
Out paleolithic Dell desktop just burped up the "Blue Screen of Death" (hardware, I did the diagnostics) so it will need replaced. I was thinking of replacing it with an "entertainment" computer and puting it in the stereo cabinet rather than on the desk top. I've been away from HeadFi for a...- Traddad

Need a good enough surge protector to kill "Vampires"
I was contemplating getting yet another device for my home theater and realized there are no less than 10 components pulling standby power. seven of them complete vampires. Can anyone suggest a "good enough" surge suppressor that can be switched remotely (it's behind the cabinet). I bought the...- Traddad

Been away for a while, need advice.
I sold all my portable players and most of my HPs a while back due to some hearing issues, so I've been out of the loop. I now find that I need a small portable to run through my car stereo so I can keep up with all the new music I have but have barely gotten to listen to. I need your advice...- Traddad

Single side mono conversion
Any reason not to wire both channels into a single driver on a set of headphones? I have hearing issues in one ear and would like to hear both channels in the other. This seems like a good cheap compromise that would allow me to use the "can" on any player.- Traddad

Odd request: Single side, mono headphone help
I have one ear that is, for some odd reason, extremely sensitive. Just minutes of listening to headphones at very low levels will cause fatigue and tinnitus. I've been listening with a driver set off one ear for a while but I know I'm missing 1/2 the music. Is there any reason not to wire one...- Traddad

Shielded power cord suggestion?
I have to run my power cord and sub cable side by side around a corner (no other way save drilling holes) so I need a nicely shielded one. Can someone suggest a modestly priced one? I'd like to stay under $40 shipped if possible and a right angle plug on the sub end would be tres bueno.- Traddad

Beresford DAC hiss
I was close to the speakers the other night and heard an audible hiss between tracks. At first I assumed it was just the caps going on my '93 Onkyo but decided to try other inputs; Nothing. All the way up. The hiss on the input with the Beresford increases with the volume knob and essentially...- Traddad

Headphone stand I built
This is a headphone stand I built for a fellow Head-Fier. This is on the finishing bench in between coats so the pic is not the best. It's made from black walnut and quilted maple. The base is 2" thick walnut and quite heavy. The blocks underneath are for finishing. I'm thinking about building...- Traddad

Leaving a DAC on 24/7?
I will probably move my DAC out to where it will always need to be on...especially since it is a Beresford and cannot be automatically/remotely switched. (when the power is shut off, the on/off switch defaults to off) Roughly how much power does a DAC like the Beresford consume when on but not...- Traddad

Help a poor traveler....
I'm holed up in a crappy motel room in Springerville, Arizona and all I have is my eeePC 900HD and it's tinny little speakers. My ears are starting to reject headphones so I need a set of good, portable speakers. What would you folks suggest?- Traddad

Anyone have experience finding lost shipments Canada > US?
I just learned this morning that my Rega amp got lost in transit via Canada Post/US Mail. It tracked OK until it hit the port of entry in Jersey City NJ. Nine days and it's still "there" although no one can locate it. Time to give up and suck up the loss?- Traddad

Need Rega Elex Schematics
I'm throwing a Hail Mary here; I just bought a Rega Elex amplifier and I would like to find the schematics just in case I need to replace some caps or whatnot. Need preamp out splitter suggestions.
I need to find if anyone makes a good splitter that will replace the jumpers between the preamp and power amp on my NAD 3020. Small amp suggestions (not headphone)
I need a small-ish amp to power a set of 6 ohm 75 watt wharfedale 9.0s as rear speakers. I would like it to have as small a footprint as practical to fit into a very cramped space. The only one I have scared up so far is the Yulong "amp one" at PVE. I believe the sonic T amp is too wimpy for...- Traddad

Quality CD Transport List (Used)
Recently, I was knocked out by just how much improved the sound was coming out of an old Sony DVD player hooked into a new DAC, when compared to my old Kenwood CD changer on it's internal DAC. Satie: Well played and well recorded/digitized CD?
What I'm basically looking for is a "test" CD to use when reviewing and making decisions on my home stereo. I thought it would be nice to get some classical that I hadn't explored yet. Basically it needs to be a regular CD but recorded/digitized and reproduced with great care. -
Good "Bang for Buck" Glass Toslink Cable?
I just purchased a Beresford DAC to address some computer/amp ground differential problems and I want a better Toslink cable than the plastic one usually comes with retail units. Is there a good "bang for the buck" glass toslink cable out there? I'm looking for about 1' 6" to 3' in length...- Traddad

DAC with Discrete Power Source?
I'm chasing a hum/hiss down in my computer/DAC/amp system and wondering if a USB DAC with a discrete power sourse (not powered by the computer via the USB cable) would put the kibosh on the electrical noise. I might be dealing with a ground loop but so far I have not been able to locate it. I...- Traddad

Good budget optical out?
I've been chasing AC noise in my computer system (yes, it is very noticeable and begins and ends with the computer...not ground fault, etc) and I need to go to a DAC with an optical connection from my 'puter.
